Brooke Hospital for Animals (India),

A Message to Our Working Equine Community and Partners
Brooke Hospital for Animals (India), known as Brooke India, was established as a Section 8 Company with a singular vision: a world where working horses, donkeys, and mules are free from suffering and live lives of dignity and worth. It is with profound sadness that we share the difficult decision to close our operations effective 01 April 2026, and thereafter dissolve the company in compliance with the Companies Act, 2013.
This resolution was reached only after deep reflection and consultation with stakeholders. Despite our unwavering commitment, regulatory restrictions have made it impossible to continue receiving single-source funding from Brooke, our holding company, leaving us without the means to sustain operations.
To our staff, partners, donors, and communities: we extend our heartfelt gratitude. Your dedication has been the heartbeat of our mission. Every step forward, every life touched, and every moment of compassion was made possible because of you. We are immensely proud of the impact we achieved together, and we trust that the values we upheld will continue to inspire long after our doors close.
As we prepare to conclude this chapter, we want to acknowledge the depth of your support, compassion, and solidarity. Words cannot fully capture what it has meant to walk alongside equine-owning communities and supporters who share our vision of a kinder world for working animals. Your encouragement has strengthened our purpose, and your voices have carried our mission forward. For this, we remain eternally grateful.
It has been a privilege to serve, to learn, and to stand together in this journey. Thank you for being an inseparable part of our story. In the coming weeks, we will discontinue communication across our website and social media channels.
For any further information or assistance, please reach out to us at [email protected]. Kindly expect delayed responses. If none are forthcoming, please attribute it to our closure. Queries thereafter may be directed to [email protected].
Please watch this short video, where voices from communities come together to express their heartfelt thanks to each one of you who has stood by us over the years and made this work possible.
Alvida 🙏 — and thank you for being a part of our story.

Brooke India’s helpline received a distress call from Buxar, Bihar, reporting a horse that could not stand due to a severe hoof injury. Farrier Champion Shanker Kumar, entrusted by the Brooke India team, responded immediately. On arrival, Shanker quickly assessed the horse’s condition. With remote guidance from our Senior Trainer Farrier—shared through calls and photos—he identified the issue: lameness caused by a deep thrush wound. Drawing on his training, Shanker trimmed the hoof, cleaned it thoroughly, and treated the wound with care.

The change was immediate—visible relief, a horse back on its feet, and a grateful owner.

This is the impact of building local farrier skills.

Meet Reva Devi from Mahuvas village in Surat, Gujarat. At the DHK brick kiln, she works every day alongside her eight equines—animals who are not just part of her livelihood, but part of her family.

Reva remembers the difficult days. Times when her animals would fall sick often, battling pain, fever, and exhaustion. Every illness brought worry—not just for their wellbeing, but for her family’s income and stability. She often felt helpless, unsure how to ease their suffering.

Things changed after Brooke India stepped in. With the new knowledge she gained, Reva slowly transformed the way she cared for her donkeys.

Today, she is deeply attentive to their needs. She makes sure they get water several times a day, and even wakes up at night when they need it. She prepares a nourishing mix of fodder and jaggery to keep them strong and energised.

For Reva, caring for her equines is more than daily work—it is an emotional bond, a shared journey. She knows her animals carry her hopes, her livelihood, and her future.

As Reva says with quiet pride, “When my animals are healthy, everything else falls into place.”

Lameness in working horses, donkeys, and mules is not just an animal health concern—it directly threatens the livelihoods of the families who depend on them. A single limp can cause pain, limit mobility, and instantly reduce earning capacity of the equine owning family. This is why early detection and skilled treatment of lameness are not optional; they are vital.

Recognising this critical need, Brooke India is placing strong emphasis on enhancing the diagnostic and clinical capabilities of its veterinary teams. From 10–13 March, Brooke India veterinarians participated in an intensive four‑day Veterinary Lameness Course at the Flying Anvil Foundation India (FAFI), Dundlod, Rajasthan. Led by Equine Surgeon Dr. K. Balamurugan, the training offered a rich blend of in‑depth learning and hands‑on clinical practice, with a focus on equine lower limb anatomy, systematic approaches to lameness assessment, effective diagnostic techniques, and practical management of common hoof and limb conditions.

By equipping veterinary teams with advanced skills, Brooke India not only improves animal welfare outcomes but also helps safeguard the economic stability of the communities that rely on these animals every day.

Prioritising equine health has always been the first priority in Brooke India’s work. In Solapur, Maharashtra, where donkeys work long hours in the intense heat of brick kilns, Brooke India team worked closely with women equine owners to address a common challenge—nutrition for hardworking animals.

To improve equine energy and wellbeing, the team introduced balanced feed energy biscuits made from locally available ingredients and essential minerals. These compact biscuits are easy to feed, reduce wastage, and provide the nutrients working donkeys need to stay healthy.

What began as a solution for equine nutrition soon became an opportunity for women to earn additional income by producing and selling the biscuits within their communities.

Today, this simple innovation is supporting healthier donkeys and stronger livelihoods for equine-owning families in Solapur.

At Brooke India, we are preparing the next generation of veterinarians through hands-on learning. During a four-day intensive training at ICAR–Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Bareilly (Uttar Pradesh), conducted by Brooke India team, interns gained practical exposure to equine treatment, compassionate handling, farriery, feeding management, and responsible use of medicines.

The programme ended on a cheerful note with Dr. Rajat Garg, UG Coordinator, presenting certificates and appreciating the interns’ commitment to serving working equines with care and confidence.

In SBF and Natraj brick kilns in Buxar, Bihar, a routine training session turned into immediate help for a distressed equine.

Brooke India’s Senior Trainer Farrier, Pradeep Kumar, was training local street farriers and Farrier Champions when he noticed an equine suffering from a painful hoof condition. Instead of just talking about the problem, he turned it into a live learning opportunity.

Right there in the field, Pradeep carefully cleaned the infected sole and guided the farriers step by step on how to treat such cases. He also demonstrated walk-and-trot checks to help them recognise lameness and limb issues.

The best part? Within 20 days, the equine recovered and was walking comfortably again.

A simple training session didn’t just build skills — it brought relief to an animal that works hard every day.
