JIH Vice-President, Prof Salim Engineer Expresses Deep Concern Over Loss of Lives in Uttar Pradesh Storms, Calls for Strengthened Disaster Preparedness
New Delhi: The Vice-President of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH), Prof Salim Engineer has expressed deep grief and concern over the tragic loss of more than a hundred lives caused by storms, heavy rains, and lightning across several districts of Uttar Pradesh.
In a statement to the media, the JIH Vice-President said, “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and express our solidarity with all those affected by this calamity. The scale of human loss and damage to homes and livelihoods is deeply distressing. While such extreme weather events are natural, the magnitude of their impact raises serious concerns about the state of our infrastructure, the adequacy of preparedness, and safety mechanisms to protect vulnerable populations.”
Prof Salim Engineer further stated, "While the state government has initiated relief measures and compensation, we urge the government to act beyond immediate and symbolic assistance. The incidents of deaths due to lightning, collapsing structures, and storm-related damage have affected the poor and those living in fragile housing conditions. One lesson that we must learn from this is the need for stronger public investment in resilient infrastructure, safe housing, early warning systems, and community awareness. Climate-related extreme weather events are increasing, and it is imperative for governments to adopt a long-term and proactive approach. There must be an emphasis on prevention, preparedness, and social protection rather than merely disaster management after the event."
The Vice-President of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind said, "It is equally concerning that such a grave humanitarian tragedy has not received the level of attention it deserves in mainstream and social media. The relative silence on an issue involving such significant loss of life shows that large sections of the media are interested only in prioritising sensational and emotional issues. Thus the important and real issues are overshadowed thereby weakening public accountability and damaging public opinion. The media, civil society, and public institutions should highlight the suffering of affected communities and ensure that their plight is neither ignored nor forgotten. We urge the government to undertake a comprehensive assessment of the causes and consequences of the disaster and to implement robust measures aimed at preventing recurrence. Providing safety and security to citizens from such tragedies is a fundamental responsibility of the state for which it must be held accountable."
