While focusing on the working conditions of workers in the informal sector, it is crucial to pay attention to the homes workers return to. Across cities, those who build and sustain urban life return to inadequate housing and precarious living conditions.

On Labour Day, it is essential to recognise that housing is central to labour justice.

Despite contributing the least to climate change, low-income and marginalized households are disproportionately impacted due to inadequate housing.

🌍 On Earth Day, it is imperative to recognize that access to adequate housing and land is a primary measure of protection against climate change, especially for the most marginalized.

🔹For Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, land was not just an economic resource, it was a tool for dignity, equality, and freedom. He recognized how caste systematically denied Dalit communities access to land, confining them to marginal spaces and economic dependence.

On Ambedkar Jayanti, we are reminded that the right to land and housing is essential for dignity and justice for marginalized communities.🔹

Did you know that an estimated 60,431 children live on the streets of Delhi?

They grow up in vulnerable conditions marked by poverty, hunger, violence, and constant uncertainty. For street children, the absence of adequate housing has a detrimental impact on their health, safety, education, and overall development.

International Day for Street Children is a reminder that housing is foundational to realizing the rights of children, including the right to health, safety and education.

For people without adequate housing, extreme heat is a public health crisis.

Extreme temperatures take a serious toll on their body, causing sickness, exhaustion, and rising healthcare costs. But the impact often goes beyond physical health. Lack of sleep and constant exposure to heat impacts their mental well-being and becomes a cause of constant discomfort.

World Health Day is a reminder that the health of an individual cannot be separated from their access to adequate housing.

To read more about the impact of heat on homeless persons, explore our report “Surviving Heat on the Streets: An Assessment of the Psychosocial Impacts of Extreme Heat on Homeless Persons” 🔗link in bio.

For trans persons, access to housing is a significant challenge and a home rarely guarantees security.

Stigma and discrimination pushes them to the margins of the city, severely limiting their housing options. Additionally, the lack of updated identity documents further excludes them from formal rental systems, where they are unable to secure legal agreements. As a result, trans people are often pushed into the informal market, where there are no safeguards available and they are constantly exposed to the risk of eviction and exploitation, with landlords holding disproportionate power.

This often results in a life punctuated by instability, threat, and insecurity which forces them to move from one place to another, without ever truly feeling at home.

A Place to Call Home: Access to Housing for Trans Persons in India, a study by HLRN, highlights how identity and documentation shape access to housing.

On Trans Visibility Day, HLRN calls for inclusive and secure housing rights for the trans community. Link for the report in bio.

In Bhim Nagar, an informal settlement located in West Delhi, HLRN facilitated a meeting between lawyers from and the community on the ongoing survey processes by the Delhi government, explained the provisions of the rehabilitation policy applicable in Delhi, and shared information materials on important documents required by the policy.

By creating space for questions and dialogue, the meeting aimed to ensure that residents are informed as well as equipped to navigate laws and policies that directly impact their housing.

Housing is only adequate when the right to clean and safe water is guaranteed. For those living in homelessness, informal settlements, and resettlement housing, accessing water is a daily struggle, exacerbated by climate change.

Many are forced to spend a large share of their limited incomes just to access water.

This World Water Day, HLRN calls for equitable access to clean and reliable water for all, regardless of someone’s housing status.
