Can India become “stray dog free” like The Netherlands? In our latest blog, Annelieke Laninga—a Dutch national living in India—shares her perspective on why the Dutch success story cannot simply be replicated here. Having experienced both countries, she reflects on the differences in policies, culture, infrastructure, waste management, and the way humans and street dogs naturally coexist in India. This blog offers a thoughtful comparison between the two realities and explores what India truly could focus on for long-term, humane solutions. Read the full blog on our website. Link in bio.

When there is conflict between people and street dogs, the focus often shifts to quick fixes targeting the dogs. But coexistence is more complex than that. It requires us to look at both sides of the same coin—what people are experiencing, and what the dogs might be going through. From fear and lack of awareness on the human side, to stress or unmet needs on the dog side—these interactions are layered. When we begin to understand this, our responses change. And that’s where real, long-term solutions come from.

You can read more about this in detail in our blog titled 'The Human Side of People–Dog Conflict: What’s On The Other Side Of The Coin?'. Link in bio.

When street dogs are labelled “aggressive,” the first reaction is often removal. But removal doesn’t solve the problem. It often displaces it or leads to other problems. What actually works is understanding why the behaviour is happening in the first place—so that we can help the dog cope better and resolve the conflict locally.

Our latest blog talks about what is actually happening when a dog is perceived as "aggressive" and how one neighbourhood moved from conflict to a more thoughtful, and effective approach to coexistence.

In this clip from our 14 December 2025 Stray Buddy Café, Sindhoor Pangal from BHARCS invites us to look more closely at what we call aggression. She reminds us that how we name behaviour shapes how we respond to it. When we stop mislabelling stress, fear and defensive responses, we begin to understand dogs more responsibly and compassionately. The next step would be to help such dogs cope better to prevent and resolve conflicts. Stay tuned for tips!

At our Stray Buddy Café on 22nd March 2026, we explored how so-called 'aggression' is often the result of a dog’s “emotional cup” overflowing after it was filled with layers of stress. Stressors could be lack of rest, food insecurity, health/pain, unpredictable routines, or overwhelming interactions with people, including their caregivers.

The conversation shifted from labelling certain community dogs as 'aggressive by nature' to exploring what such dogs are trying to communicate. And how we can help dogs decompress so that they can cope better with stressors without escalating.

What are your thoughts on this approach? Have you noticed any patterns while observing street dogs with 'loud' behaviours? Let’s continue the conversation in the comments.

🎶 On Sunday 29th of March 2026 at Depot48 in Delhi, we gracefully enjoyed a beautiful live music performance by Abhilasha, a resident of one of the Stray Buddy localities — “Fabric of Song” — weaving together ghazals, Hindi classics & Punjabi folk… all inspired by colours, fabrics & timeless melodies.

Abhilasha observed the work carried out by community animal caregivers in Saket (Delhi) closely over the years. She writes: „Since the cause of animals is close to my heart, and I strongly believe in the power of supporting the welfare of animals, I am doing this concert as a fundraiser for Stray Buddy (All Creatures Great and Small).“

🐶 The proceeds will go to the Stray Buddy community dogs (water bowls, vaccinations etc.) and distribution will happen through our Mission Bulk Supply WhatsApp group.

Why does a dog react or seem “aggressive”? And does this behaviour really occur suddenly, unexpectedly, and out of the blue? In this snippet, Anushree Thammanna explains the “cup full analogy” – a simple way to understand how stress builds up in dogs over time until it spills over. If caregivers of community dogs and pet parents can learn to see this happening at an earlier stage, they can respond with more awareness and possibly help such dogs cope better. Stay tuned for our next reel on how to send calming signals to a dog that is growling or barking at you.
