Having ownership of a smartphone doesn't guarantee equal time or autonomy.

Data collected from our sample of adolescents and young adults in Kalyanpuri reveals how unpaid domestic work, familial surveillance, and rigid social norms shape daily phone access—with only 16% of female phone owners getting 3–6 hours of screen time, compared to 56.25% of males. Even when girls own a device, their screen time is heavily mediated by household chores, pressure to maintain family 'reputation,' or restricted to background music streaming while working.

On World Youth Skills Day, we're reminded that skills are more than a pathway to employment- they build confidence, dignity, and opportunity.

At ISST's Community Centre in Kalyanpuri, we asked young girls and boys a simple question: "What does skill mean to you?" Their responses went beyond livelihoods, reflecting aspirations for financial independence, self-confidence, respect, and the ability to shape a better future for themselves and their communities.

At ISST, we believe skill development is about more than preparing young girls and boys for work. Through learning, dialogue, and collective growth, we strive to equip youth with the skills, confidence, and critical thinking needed to become better citizens and contribute meaningfully to society.

Congratulations to the NCAER National Council of Applied Economic Research, The Quantum Hub (TQH), and WiDEN for their impactful collaborative project.

A key highlight of this event held on 12th July, 2026 was unpacking the gender and digital landscape using fresh data from the India Human Development Survey (IHDS)-III. The data clearly shows that while physical access to technology is growing, the nature of that access remains deeply divided by gendered social structures.

At ISST, we believe data is most powerful when paired with the human stories behind the numbers. It was an incredible opportunity to be invited to present "Voices from the Ground" in a dynamic fireside chat mode.

Moderated by our Director and Research Fellow, Jahnvi Andharia the conversation featured community members from our ISST Saathi Centre—Shobha, Raajni, and Himanshu. They responded to critical questions about their daily tech usage, illustrating exactly how macro-data translates into lived experiences:

• Validating the Research: Many of their stories beautifully validated the structural barriers outlined in both the NCAER-TQH WiDEN Report and ISST’s own independent research on smart app usage—confirming that device ownership does not automatically equal unmediated digital freedom.

• Demonstrating True Agency: Crucially, Raajni and Shobha highlighted how they actively negotiate these spaces. Far from being passive users, they demonstrated immense personal agency in navigating household expectations to carve out their own digital footprints.

• The Power of Collective Spaces: Their journeys underscored a vital truth—the undeniable role of women’s organizations in fostering the safety, confidence, and collective empowerment needed for women to claim their digital rights.
