UN-Habitat India and the Government of Odisha are partnering for a sustainable urban future under ANKUR. UN-Habitat has joined hands with Housing & Urban Development Department, Govt. of Odisha, Government of Odisha through a newly signed MoU under ANKUR (Atal Network for Knowledge, Urbanisation, and Reform) to co-create inclusive, climate-resilient, and innovation-led cities.
Spotlight on:
🔹 Urban RAASTA – a pioneering framework for integrated, climate-smart urban planning.
🔹 Young Gamechangers Initiative (YGI) – empowering youth with digital tools and participatory planning methods.
🔹 Circular Economy for Plastic Waste – using frontier technology to upcycle plastics and improve local livelihoods.

This collaboration supports the Sustainable Development Goals and the New Urban Agenda, ensuring Leaving No One and No Place Behind.

UN-Habitat India Hosts Stakeholder Consultation on Circularity of Low-Value Plastics in Bhubaneswar! ♻🏗

UN-Habitat successfully concluded the "Frontier Technologies for Inclusive Circularity of Low-Value Plastics (LVP) Project" stakeholder consultation workshop at Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on 27 February 2025.

Bringing together key stakeholders from BMC, Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC), Cuttack Development Authority (CDA), Central Institute of Plastics Engineering & Technology (CIPET), Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology (IMMT), Works Department, Government of Odisha, WATCO Odisha, Odisha Bridge & Construction Corporation Limited (OB&CC), Odisha State Housing Board (OSHB), Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OPCB), and Housing & Urban Development Department, Govt. of Odisha, the workshop focused on policy frameworks, regulatory guidelines, incentives, and testing mechanisms for sustainable construction products made from upcycled low-value plastic and C&D waste.

By leveraging frontier technologies, this initiative aims to transform waste into construction materials, paving the way towards green transition and circular economy. 🌱🌍

What happens when Young Gamechangers meet Architects and Urban Planners? Read more --->

Under the (YGI), an exciting Expert Design Studio took place from 16th – 20th January 2025, bringing together young changemakers, design experts, and community leaders to shape the future of Jatni, Odisha.

Hosted at the Young Gamechangers Lab in Jatni, the hands-on sessions with EVA Studio—coined as ‘Ateliers’—focused on transforming two sites - Mundia Sahi Park & Ground and Maa Uttarayanee Youth Club Ground - into inclusive and vibrant public spaces. These two sites were chosen by the community through a public vote earlier in 2024, proving that youth and residents have the power to lead change!

Discussions across the Ateliers sessions covered:
-> Co-Design in Action – What are key design elements needed to bring the vision to life?
-> Refining Masterplans – What environmental and social factors are to be considered?
-> Regulatory Frameworks – What government policies and standards need to be considered?
-> Engaging with Local Artisans & Vendors – What interesting materials can be used and what do they cost?
-> Budgeting & Funding – Where will the resources come from and how will they be allocated?
-> Maintenance Strategies – Who will maintain the spaces and how will it be sustained?

A major next step is to launch an e-Participatory Budgeting voting process led by the Municipality where communities will work on prioritizing the interventions they wish to see in the sites.
