Our Story: Learning Begins with Parents at Home
Before they even set foot in school, underprivileged children have dramatically lower abilities than do children from richer households. This is because learning starts not in school, but at home. Unfortunately, parents from low-income backgrounds lack the awareness, resources and confidence to support children during the most important years, birth-8, of their lives.
“Main khudh anpad hoon, main kya karoongi?” (I myself am uneducated, what will I do?) is usually what a mother thinks to herself. The result: her child is unprepared for school and already behind his/her privileged counterparts. This is where Saarthi Education comes in.
We provide her with resources in the form of engaging, easy-to-do activities that she can do with her child. Play, conversation and learning are synonymous after all. She begins by taking her child on a scavenger hunt around the house, identifying objects that begin with the akshar “k” - “kaichi, kapda, katori, kangi”. She gives her child the challenge of counting the number of shoes, windows and tomatoes in the house.
Meanwhile, a woman from her community, her Saarthi Sahyogi, provides her with support and builds her motivation. Over time, the same mother who once doubted her abilities, starts actively creates learning experiences for her child at home. She realises that she isn’t incapable after all. The result: a child who doesn’t need to wait to begin school to be able to learn, but a child with strong foundational skills set for success.
