Mrinalini Mukherjee Foundation invites project proposals for 𝐋𝐞𝐞𝐥𝐚 𝐌𝐮𝐤𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐣𝐞𝐞 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭-𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔. This is an annual grant that seeks to support artists-educators in India who are engaged in developing and running an art education project with school-aged children (5- 18 years of age), either within or outside the classroom.

𝗪𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀𝗹𝗮𝘂𝘀 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝘀 brings together Goa Water Stories, Two-Thirds of Us, and kalchi kodi. These three ongoing bodies of work draw on community practice, research, image-making, listening, writing, mapping, food and the unbound book.

𝗚𝗼𝗮 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 grows from exchanges and shared enquiry with communities across Goa, where lived experience, oral histories, ecological practice and local expertise converge across rivers, wells, wetlands, khazan lands and the coast.𝗧𝘄𝗼-𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗨𝘀 follows a sustained, close-grained inquiry into the politics of water, its movement, access, governance, memory and the uneven worlds it produces. 𝗸𝗮𝗹𝗰𝗵𝗶 𝗸𝗼𝗱𝗶 moves through the materiality and sensorial life of fish curry and rice, smell, taste, touch, seasons and the everyday practices through which culture is carried.

Together, the works ask how knowledge is made, held, shared and disseminated. They attend to histories that have been othered, embodied skills, ecological observation, fieldwork, photographs, maps, recipes, stories and collective encounters as active forms of knowing. The exhibition approaches water as a relation and a form of embodied knowledge, carried through labour, memory, sensory practice, and the everyday ways communities live with monsoons, rivers, wetlands, and the sea, shaping livelihoods, bodies, ecologies, and imaginaries.

𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘦, 𝘦𝘯𝘫𝘰𝘺 becomes an invitation to encounter these worlds sensorially and politically, and to consider what it means to receive from them, participate in them, and care for their continuance. Water’s futures remain inseparable from the communities who live, work, remember, share and imagine with it in their everyday, collective lives.

𝗪𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀𝗹𝗮𝘂𝘀 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝘀 was supported by the 𝗠𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶 𝗠𝘂𝗸𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗷𝗲𝗲 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰.

for his project

વાડીઓ – કુવાડીઓ / Vadiyo – Kuvadiyo

Vadiyo – Kuvadiyo takes an eco-philosophical course to explore various forms of depletion and violence that the Gir forest in Gujarat faces today, and seeks to critically engage with questions of memory that become central to these processes. The project emphasizes the need for dialogue with and between indigenous folk, local communities, farmers and government officials, as a vital aspect of research and fieldwork on sustainability.

The grant will support Mrugen’s proposal to develop a video work that probes into the short-term incentives and economically driven decisions that are adversely impacting the Gir’s diverse ecosystem. The title itself is a satirical take on ideas of native and non-native and is an entry-point to a deeper introspection on two plants - the aggressively invasive Cassia Tora and native cash crop Mango - that have come to critically impact the biodiversity of the Gir Sanctuary.

Mrugen’s proposal was selected by a jury consisting of artist Shilpa Gupta and Prof. YS Alone.

They felt that his proposal brought out important narratives and forms of interrogation that often do not get shared in the mainstream when speaking about conservation and communities from such zones. They also found the proposed project to be well conceived both materially and conceptually, and felt that this grant can have a well intended impact on his practice at this time in his career.

Following an open call for proposals, there were two rounds of shortlisting and a final round of interviews, from which they selected Rathod’s proposal.

Announcing the recipient of the Mrinalini Mukherjee Creative Arts Grant 2026

This is not a workshop about water.
It is about what water reveals.
About rivers and the cities that grow around them.
About infrastructures built to hold, move, share and remember water.
About landscapes that carry histories older than the city.
About the knowledge held in bodies, communities, ecologies and places.

Over a week, 𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙒𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙧, 𝙍𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙢𝙗𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙋𝙡𝙖𝙘𝙚 will move across the Yamuna, Delhi’s piyaos and baolis, and the Aravallis, through walking, listening, observing, documenting, making and sharing.

The workshop brings together different ways of knowing and being with place, asking how artistic practice might respond to landscapes that are ecological, historical, political and deeply lived.

Join us for a week-long immersive field workshop that invites artists, researchers, and practitioners to explore Delhi’s layered water landscapes through walking, listening, observing, documenting, and making, mediated by 𝗪𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀𝗹𝗮𝘂𝘀 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝘀, supported by the 𝗠𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶 𝗠𝘂𝗸𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗷𝗲𝗲 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰.

Moving across the Yamuna River, historic piyaos and baolis, and the Aravalli ridge, the workshop approaches water not simply as a resource or geography, but as a living archive of memory, labour, ecology, and urban transformation. Through field immersions, studio sessions, and conversations with practitioners from diverse disciplines, participants will engage with the interconnected histories and ecologies that continue to shape the city. Participants will engage with facilitators working across movement, sound, ecology, heritage, environmental conservation, community knowledge, and site-responsive artistic practice.

The workshop foregrounds process over outcome, encouraging site-responsive practices that emerge through collective learning, multisensorial observation, and embodied engagement.
