Centre for Chronic Disease Control (CCDC) is a New Delhi based not-for-profit organization, established in December 2000. Our mission is to address the growing challenge of chronic diseases, in varied settings of the developing countries through:

-Knowledge generation, which can inform policies and empower programmes for the prevention and control of chronic diseases
-Knowledge translation intend

ed to operationalize research results by bridging the critical gaps between relevant research and effective implementation, through analytic work, capacity building, advocacy and development of educational resources for enhancing the empowerment of people and professionals. CCDC has been recognized as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (SIRO) by Department of Scientific & Industrial Research (DSIR), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. It also holds registration under Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 1976. CCDC undertakes clinical research with special emphasis on chronic non-communicable diseases (NCD). Within the spectrum of chronic diseases, our main focus areas are: cardiology, diabetes and metabolic disease, vascular diseases, cancers and mental health. In addition, basic science research in diet/nutrition and cardiac biochemistry are also carried out. The research work at CCDC has produced major insights into the epidemiology, developmental origin, and biomarkers of CVD and diabetes in India; practice patterns on Acute Coronary Syndrome; translation research in CVDs; and development of low-cost combination drugs for primary and secondary prevention of CVDs in South Asia. CCDC holds recognition as a โ€˜Centre of Excellence in Clinical Researchโ€™ from the Clinical Development Service Agency (CDSA), Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. It is also a WHO Collaborating Centre for Surveillance, Capacity building and Translational Research in Cardio-Metabolic Diseases.

With over 29 million nurses worldwide, nursing represents the largest health workforce , yet one of the most under-supported in the fight against climate-driven disease.

The ICN 2026 theme "Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives." is a powerful call to action for policymakers, institutions, and health systems to invest in the empowerment, safety, leadership, and well-being of nursing professionals.

At the Centre for Chronic Disease Control , our work at the intersection of climate and chronic disease places nurses at the centre of building resilient, equitable, and sustainable healthcare systems.

This International Nurses Day, we reaffirm our commitment to advocating for every nurse who carries the weight of a changing climate on their shoulders and the health of millions in their hands.

We are delighted to share that Dr Poornima Prabhakar joins global voices in amplifying the impact of climate change on cardiovascular diseases.

In a recent publication in โ€˜Global Heartโ€™, she led a journal article titled โ€˜Climate Change and Cardiovascular Health: Advancing Resilient Action Beyond COP30โ€™. As the chair of the Air Pollution and Climate Change Expert Group (APCEG) of the World Heart Federation, she is joined by Co-Authors: Cesar Berenstein (Sanatorio San Jorge), Sarah Hamidi (WHF), Rajesh Vedanthan (New York University), and Thomas Muenzel (University of Mainz) in this piece which places CVDs at the centre of the health narrative in climate discussions and marks an important milestone in advancing health within global climate discussions. Deliberations at COP-30 in Belem, widely stated to be the โ€˜Imlementation COPโ€ provided the catalytic stimulus to the authors to bring CVD management and in particular CVD prevention to the fore as a strong impetus for climate action.

An overwhelming increase in heatwaves, droughts, wildfires, deteriorating air quality, floods and severe weather events has challenged already fragile health systems, disrupting care and often leading to the worsening of existing morbidities, including cardiovascular illness. Yet, globally, risk determinants of a changing climate remain poorly addressed. Integrating cardiovascular health into climate policy is not only a moral imperative; it is a pragmatic pathway towards healthier people and a sustainable planet, the journal highlights.

In the coming days, Dr Prabhakaran will be at the World Heart Federation gathering in Geneva and the World Heart Summit to further amplify the learnings and integrate cardiovascular health into climate policy.
