Violence, unrest, crime.

This is how most people see the North East of India. But did you know? The North East is a whole lot more than just this. It’s a land made of different communities.

Kacharis
Karbis

Each has their own cultural identities, languages, practices and traditions.

But, each group is mired with its own ethnic conflicts, that often displace entire communities. This displacement brings with it severe gaps in income, and with it, a lack of safety.

It is such gaps that further increase the risks of trafficking. Explore with us how people, especially women fall through these gaps.

North East India - or as many of us are taught in school, the land of the Seven Sisters. For most of us, the North East seems like a distant, far away place. Many do not know the names of these states, their cities, let alone know about the unique cultures and people.

Connected to the rest of India through a narrow corridor known as the ‘chicken’s neck’, North East India remains largely unconnected in terms of physical access, opportunities and awareness. For many people, this “remote” region remains too far, and unknown.

But this harsh reality needs to change. The North East should not be something that is unknown, or inaccessible.

Many people often ask us how we measure the impact of Project Suraksha.

At its core, this initiative focuses on raising awareness, mapping community needs, and conducting detailed baseline and end-line studies, supported by comparative analysis. Unlike traditional impact metrics, the changes we measure are not always immediately visible. They are qualitative shifts—quiet yet powerful transformations that reshape mindsets. Our work may not always translate into easily quantifiable numbers, as seen in rescue programs. Yet its impact runs deep.

We see individuals taking courageous first steps, such as filing a First Information Report (FIR) at their local police stations. We witness survivors choosing to say no to family-arranged marriages when stigma or safety is a concern. Communities are finding their voice. Women and girls are becoming aware of their rights, engaging in meaningful conversations with men about dignity, and standing up for themselves with confidence.

These are changes that last.

Through Project Suraksha, we are not just responding to the present—we are investing in a future where awareness leads to action, and rights are understood, respected, and upheld.

Exclusion can lead to exploitation.

The world moved online. But for a survivor of human trafficking, it is a significant hurdle in the path towards financial independence.

When survivors upskill with us, it is imperative that they learn how to interact digitally. Be it online job applications, digital payments and interviews, they remain largely locked out of the current workforce. It can be incredibly frustrating and can have life changing consequences as it might lead to a relapse.
