IPL is among the top 5 global sports league in terms of revenue and viewership still it's Sustainability initiatives are far behind the other European league. BCCI has started taking few steps like
- Building solar power stadiums like Narendra Modi stadium of Ahmedabad, Chinnaswamy stadium Bengaluru
- Planting trees on every dot balls of IPL
- Players jersey made from recycled plastic
- LED stumps with rechargeable batteries
- Partnered with sustainable textile manufacturers to explore organic cotton and eco-friendly dyes option
- Partnered with UNEP
These initiatives are initial steps towards bringing a change however looking at the urgent climate crises, regressive steps are needed from this more than 5 billion dollar revenue generating league. We urge for a carbon neutral IPL. After all IPL has turned 18 in 2025 and it's the time IPL to be a more sustainable and Carbon neutral!
