SETU Forum on Solid Waste Management: Key Takeaways:

The Dehradun Citizens Forum (DCF) was invited to be a part of the SETU (State Institute for Empowering and Transforming Uttarakhand)-hosted dynamic forum in Dehradun on turning solid waste into wealth. Experts from Sikkim, Arunachal, and beyond shared actionable insights.
Speakers & Contributions:
• Dr. Bhavna Shinde (Coordinator): Stressed holistic stakeholder accountability—admin, urban bodies, panchayats, private sector, and society—for environmental and social impact.
• Vishal Parasar and Shahzad Ahmed (Advisers, SETU) Highlighted economic, ecological, and social benefits of proper waste management and highlighted present projects.
• Dr. Raj Kishan Joshi (Vice Chairman, SETU): In his Keynote, unveiled a 10-point vision: Converge governance, zero landfills (from 50%), decentralize processing, PPP models, tech integration, dignified jobs, segregation, and tourism links.
• Jasojeet Naik: Showcased RFID/QR tech for tracking collectors—auto-logs house visits to prevent skips.
• Itticcha Sharah (Arunachal): Demonstrated 3 Cs—Co-design, Cultural Integration, Community Governance—for effective collection.
• Kapil Chhetri (Sikkim): Advocated stakeholder sign-off (community, panchayat, bureaucracy) before launch.
• Rohit Joshi: Noted panchayats can generate revenue via waste-to-wealth and Deposit Return Scheme (DRS).
• Sumit Singh (Himvillage): Shared a practical action plan implemented in Uttarakhand.
• S***a Bangera (Mumbai): Shared practical projects and equipment being created and implemented, including low-capacity compactors.

DRS thriving in Char Dham (especially Kedarnath)—QR-coded bottles/snacks returned for value. Time to scale statewide!

Did you know that an average urban Indian spends about 90–100 hours every year stuck in traffic which is almost 4 full days? This is not just a waste of time, it also has a serious impact on our economy, env & public health. In this video, Anoop Nautiyal tries to explain why traffic congestion doesn’t disappear even after widening roads & building flyovers and what the real solutions might be. The message is really meaningful & relevant to the present condition in our city as well.

The Paryavaran Bachao Andolan walk from Dilaram Chowk to Centrio Mall, protesting against the plan to cut a number of trees on the New Cantt Road, which the government had promised not to remove last year. Protestors reminded the authorities of their promise.

A number of citizen groups of Dehradun participated in the event, which was attended by hundreds of people.

Eminent speakers like Mr. Ravi Chopra, Mr. Anoop Nautiyal, Ms. Ira Chaudhary, and other people from the public addressed the crowd.

This morning's gathering was also a call to denounce the unsustainable development plans being adopted by the authorities and the relentless chopping of trees currently taking place. It was also reiterated that green policies/manifestos must be made the focal point for the upcoming elections.
