A community interaction program was conducted with the Beyt Dwarka fisher community on 24 May 2026.

The program aimed to communicate and translate the key outcomes of ten years of Dugong Projects research in the Gulf of Kachchh (GoK) into locally relevant conservation discussions. Major issues addressed included dugong entanglement vigilance, preventive measures during fishing activities, and the importance of exercising caution while operating in dugong and seagrass habitats located outside the Marine National Park (MNP) boundaries.

Community members reported that dugongs continue to be frequently sighted foraging in and around previously mapped habitats, indicating the continued ecological importance of these areas. Fishers also expressed concern regarding the absence of a designated safe docking area, highlighting it as a growing issue that could potentially increase the risk of dugong–fisher conflict in the near future.

On the occasion of World Dugong Day, the CAMPA Dugong Tamil Nadu team conducted an outreach and awareness program in the Gulf of Mannar (GoM) region at Pirappanvalasai coastal village in Ramanathapuram district, Tamil Nadu.

During the program, the TN team highlighted the ecological importance of dugongs and emphasized the need for their conservation and protection. The team also shared the significant efforts and achievements of the CAMPA Dugong initiative over the past 10 years in conserving dugongs and their habitats in Tamil Nadu.

The event witnessed active participation from fisherfolk, coastal community members, long-time dugong informants, and volunteers associated with the conservation programme. Their shared experiences and interactions added great value to the awareness session and enriched the overall program.

Around 50 participants attended the event, reflecting strong community engagement and support for dugong conservation initiatives in the region.

In observance of World Dugong Day, a painting competition for children and an outreach and awareness program were organised at Kollukkadu Village,Thanjavur District . Around 40 children from coastal communities took part in the painting competition, illustrating the importance of dugongs and seagrass ecosystems through their artwork.

During the program, the TN CAMPA Dugong Team highlighted the ecological significance of dugongs and seagrass habitats, emphasizing the importance of conserving dugongs for the health of marine ecosystems and the sustainability of coastal livelihoods. The event also served as a valuable platform for sharing both traditional and scientific knowledge across generations, with children and fisherfolk actively engaging in the discussions and activities.

The program witnessed the participation of around 80 peoples including fisherfolk, village heads, community members, and other local stakeholders, making it a meaningful initiative for raising awareness and strengthening community involvement in dugong conservation.

A day filled with excitement, teamwork, learning, and a shared commitment to marine conservation. Through interactive activities, challenges, and a special treasure hunt, participants came together with one mission—to find our missing dugong and bring it back home.

From solving clues and scanning QR codes to completing fun tasks at different stations, every step reminded us of the importance of protecting one of the ocean's most gentle and endangered species.
The journey was not just about finding a dugong—it was about understanding its story, its habitat, and our role in safeguarding the marine world.

World Dugong Day gave us an opportunity to connect, collaborate, and celebrate the incredible biodiversity of our oceans while spreading awareness about the need for conservation.

On this World Dugong Day (28th May 2026), we are celebrating a massive milestone: A decade of the CAMPA-Dugong Recovery Program!🌊
See how 10 years of science and community action have transformed marine conservation in India:
🚀 Major Milestones:
2016–2018: Began baseline surveys and mapped critical seagrass habitats.
2019–2022: Deployed drone monitoring and established India’s First Dugong Conservation Reserve in Palk Bay (448.34 km²).
2023–2025: Documented rare dugong herds in the Andamans for the first time in 40 years!

🌱 India also has 15 species of seagrass, supporting biodiversity, fisheries, and blue carbon storage.

Seagrasses are the main food source for dugongs — making their survival closely linked. Protecting seagrass means protecting dugongs and healthy coastal ecosystems. 💙
