Balajee entered into its 10th year of operation carrying on the mission of socio economic upliftment of rural poor, women and financially deprived people.
Balajee Sewa Sansthan is a non-profit Organization committed to working for overall development of marginal people like economic self-sufficiency, through various initiatives. Main activities the NGO have been active in spreading awareness about Health and Hygiene, water, sanitation, education and eradicating social evils prevalent among economically and socially disadvantaged people. Society ent
ered into micro finance area to help poor people access institutional funds. While working among the poorer people we realized that main requirement of these people is not
awareness alone but also access to institutional funds . People had basic skills to carry on their daily chores but they always remained short of funds. Whatever these people earned as daily wage earners/ vegetable selling and other small Activities, was spent on consumption needs. Shortage of funds and ever increasing demand for consumption and productive purpose pushed them to the lap of professional money lenders who charged exorbitant interest making it almost impossible for a poor person to come out of their debt trap. It was basically for this reason that Society started Livelihood Finance operations among its client in February 2010 & that too in far off villages in Uttarakhand. Along with livelihood finance, we have provided the villagers with services of micro insurance, financial awareness workshops & livelihood related
technical trainings.

Where there's a will there's a way’ – A Women can achieve everything with her strong willpower and courage.
Mrs. Veerbala, a 35 years old woman from Jamanpur, selaqui, a village in Dehradun District of Uttarakhand, shares a similar story. She married to Kailash Kumar around 18 years back, who works as a Guard in a nearby factory of the area. Her husband was the sole earner and didn’t have a reliable source of income. After the death of his husband, the lack of income -generating opportunities and her lack of formally recognised skills and education made it difficult for Veerbala to find work. The family’s financial condition was putting a strain on Veerbala’s life. After his husband’s death due to a road accident, she managed her livelihood with some small earnings.
After some months, she met Amita Dabral, Field Facilitator from Balajee Sewa Sansthan, a Dehradun based NGO. Interaction Session between Veerbala and Amita brought a positive response and veerbala joined a local Self Help Group – Balajee Bhawna SHG. The members of the group started saving a minimum amount of Rs. 100 every month.
Veerbala has seemed as a woman of strong willpower and courage from the beginning, but it was after becoming a member of the SHG that her financial understanding grew exponentially. She persisted to improve her family’s financial condition and also nurturing her two children.
She took a Micro Finance of Rs. 50,000 from Balajee sewa Sansthan, which is originally supported by Rashtriya Mahila Kosh and opened a Cosmetic Shop. Within a span of 3 months, she returned the first three loan installments.
Today the Cosmetic shop is much more than a shop for her; it’s her Food, Living and Livelihood. You can find cosmetics and other fancy items in her shop. The idea of expanding her business is in her mind but she says, she will grow it with the exposure she receives when she goes to the nearby markets of Dehradun city. She earns about Rs 6,000 monthly.
Veerbala is now living happily with her sons who also help her in her shop, for buying items for her shops, supporting each other in their work. Her hard work and courage made her financially Independent and also improved the living standard of her family.
This story is one of the stories of one of our steps for Women Empowerment and Livelihood Generation- The Story of Veerbala!!
