Waste Warriors

Waste Warriors Founded in 2012, we're a nonprofit NGO committed to cleaning up India! We're developing sustainable s

We have a young team working in Dehradun, Rishikesh, Dharamshala, and in the eastern landscape of Corbett Tiger Reserve.

* We’re building Model Wards for cleanliness in Dehradun & Dharamshala, and Model Villages in the Corbett Landscape.
* We’ve built Uttarakhand’s first Material Recovery Facility dedicated to boosting Dehradun’s plastic waste recycling rate and by training and improving the live

lihoods of waste pickers. We have a 2nd and 3rd facility coming up soon in Dehradun and Dharamshala.
* We’ve partnered with Tetra Pak India to build Dehradun’s first recycling market for used beverage cartons by working with bulk generators, scrap dealers, and waste pickers.
* We’ve partnered with MakeMyTrip and Uttarakhand Tourism to transform Sahastradhara waterfalls into a zero-waste tourist destination with its own localized waste management system.
* Our educational programs include ‘Green Gurukul’ in Dehradun, ‘Swachhta ki Pathshala’ in Dharamshala, and ‘Children’s Days’ in Corbett. These programs are focused on simplifying solid waste management education for schools, and include training teachers, teaching students, and engaging both in interactive and creative learning activities and sessions.

Our latest article in The Wire explores how plastic waste is increasingly becoming a part of Himalayan ecosystems and affecting wildlife in ways that often go unnoticed.
From animals feeding at garbage dumps to plastic entering fragile mountain habitats, the article looks at how unmanaged waste and rising tourism are reshaping ecological relationships in the region.
The piece also reflects on an important gap in conservation conversations. Waste is often seen as an urban sanitation issue, but rarely discussed as a wildlife and environmental concern despite its growing impact on biodiversity and natural ecosystems.
This is part of our larger collaboration with Nature inFocus to encourage more storytelling and documentation around environmental challenges in mountain regions.
If you are a photographer, storyteller, researcher, or someone working closely with mountain ecosystems, we invite you to be a part of this growing conversation. Registrations for the initiative are now open.

हम कूड़ा भी दें और पैसे भी?” — Give you our waste, and pay for it too?
We hear this often during user-fee collection. And we understand where it comes from.
Dumping in the open has always been free. Burning has always been free. So a small monthly fee for door-to-door collection, on steep slopes, with careful segregation, simply doesn’t compute as a service worth paying for.
What nobody sees is the person carrying that bag up the hill. The sorting. The processing. The system behind what looks like someone just taking your rubbish away.
The fee isn’t for the waste. It’s for everything that happens to it after.

Announcing Waste Warriors’ New CEO

Waste Warriors Society is entering a new chapter with Mayank Sharma taking over as the next CEO of the organisation, while Vishal Kumar transitions from the role after 5 and a half years of transformational leadership.

Mayank brings over 12 years of experience in the development sector. He joined Waste Warriors in 2022 as Senior Manager, Partnerships, and since becoming Director in 2024, has led several critical functions across finance, HR, compliance, administration, and projects in remote Himalayan regions.

Over the years, he has played an important role in strengthening the systems and operations that support our growing work across eco sensitive mountain landscapes.

Raised in Dehradun, Mayank brings a deeply personal connection to the region and its communities. His leadership is shaped by closely observing nature, people, and the changing realities of mountain ecosystems, values that continue to guide Waste Warriors’ work on waste management and environmental resilience.

As we welcome this transition, we also want to acknowledge Vishal’s contribution to the organisation. Under his leadership, Waste Warriors expanded its work across more than 12 locations, received the Keeling Curve Prize 2023, responded to natural disasters alongside communities, and set a world record for the largest mountain cleanup.
We thank him for his leadership and commitment.

The work continues...

The mountains remain at the centre of it... and we look forward to the continued support of our well-wishers.

We’ve all heard this before “People don’t respect public spaces!” And honestly, we’ve probably said it too.
But the conversation rarely goes beyond that.
Let’s change that.

We have some really really big news to share 🚨

Waste Warriors is partnering with Nature in Focus to introduce a new category called Himalayas on the Edge in their annual photography contest.

Nature in Focus is a platform that brings together photographers and storytellers to build a deeper understanding of the natural world. Over the years, it has become one of the most respected spaces for wildlife photography in India, shaping how people see and connect with nature.

Across the Himalayan region, the rapid growth of tourism and infrastructure has made waste a visible part of these landscapes. In many places, poor waste management has led to garbage accumulating close to forests and wildlife habitats. Animals often get drawn to these sites, mistaking waste for food. From elephants and bears to birds and insects, many species are now interacting with discarded human materials. They get entangled, ingest plastics while foraging, or are harmed in ways that often go unnoticed.

Through this category, we hope to show these unseen realities and bring forward the stories of those who cannot speak for themselves.

The contest dates will be announced soon on the Nature in Focus website and the category is open to photographs of wildlife and waste from any of the 13 Himalayan states.

We are sharing this early in case you are already travelling in the mountains or planning a trip. :)

Let’s give a voice to the voiceless. Stay tuned.

We are so happy to finally share this. The Shimla project is live, made possible by our community, our active citizens, and the support of HDFC Parivartan.
And the journey that led here:
120 Clean-Ups | 6,341 kg Dry Waste Collected | 32+ Signboards | 30 IEC Activities | 1 Functioning Plastic Waste Management Unit
Across 9 Panchayats. By people who simply chose to show up, every single time.
BDO Mashobra, SBPO Mashobra, HDFC Cluster Head Mr. Virender Sharma and team, and Col. Jinhu Ram of 133 Battalion Infantry TA ECO Dogra stood alongside the very citizens who made this possible. Each one was honoured with a token of respect, because they earned it.
Want to be part of what comes next? Follow our journey and reach out, because real change is always built together.

We talk about climate change and rarely mention waste, but we should be.
Most people see it as a sanitation or recycling problem. But it’s also a major climate opportunity, a public health issue, and a community resilience strategy, all in one. When we reduce, reuse, and rethink what we throw away, we’re cutting methane emissions, protecting vulnerable communities, and building stronger, more self-sufficient systems.
You don’t have to be perfect to be part of it. Say no to single-use plastic. Reuse what you have. Resist the urge to buy new when the old still works.
And spare some gratitude for the people who show up every day and handle what we throw away, our green workers, who make this whole system work. 💚
Zero Waste isn’t a trend. It’s one of the most underrated climate solutions we already have, and it starts with all of us.
