PFA - People For Animals Uttarakhand

PFA - People For Animals Uttarakhand People for Animals Uttarakhand is a unit of India's largest animal welfare/rights organization People for Animals, started by Smt. Maneka Gandhi in 1992.

People For Animals Uttarakhand (PFA Uttarakhand) was established in 2012 as a charitable trust. The organisation is a chapter of its parent organisation i.e. People For Animals. In particular, PFA Uttarakhand is the legal and policy wing of People For Animals. Being an inherent part of India’s largest animal protection organisation, the organisational mandate of People For Animals Uttarakhand has

evolved to encompass capacity building, policy development, public awareness as well as sheltering. Through PFA Uttarakhand’s continued efforts of working closely with the Central Government and various State Governments as well as organisational strategy of seeking judicial intervention, it has achieved certain significant milestones in the field of animal welfare. Capacity building of law enforcement and judicial agencies (such as Police and Magistrate Sensitisation Workshops) constitute a core aspect of our work towards sensitising administrative personnel about the cause of animal welfare and further strengthening the animal protection framework in India. This has paved the way for a regime of positive laws and policies in favour of protecting animals. The organisational spirit of direct action work on the ground in terms of service to animals manifests itself through a dedicated People For Animals Uttarakhand Animal Shelter. Located in the quaint little hamlet of Chharba in Sahaspur Block of Dehradun District of Uttarakhand and spread across 7 bighas, the shelter is currently home to cats and equines which have been rescued from conditions of cruelty and neglect. Funds and resources have been utilised with the single-minded focus of providing the animals with succour and sanctuary.

Most people who do the Kedarnath yatra never learn what happened to the animal that carried them.

We’ve spent over a decade working on that trail - running the only equine infirmary on the route, documenting cruelty that would otherwise go unrecorded, pushing for enforcement of rules that existed only on paper, and taking the animals who can no longer work to a place where nothing more will ever be asked of them.

Swipe through to see what that work actually looks like - on the mountain and at the sanctuary.

Every animal we treat, feed, and house for life costs money.

If you’d like to support this work, or have questions about how your contribution is used, WhatsApp us on +91 95604 72207.

This is Bura’s rescue story.

Some working animals are abandoned the moment they can no longer work but their pain doesn’t stop just because the work has to continue after abandonment. Someone needs to care for them when they’re left all alone after being exploited.

And that’s what happened to Bura. He was rescued from Sonprayag during the Kedarnath Yatra after he was found with severe injuries and a dislocated hind leg joint. Walking had become painful, yet he was left behind in that condition.

Today, Bura is safe at our Equine Infirmary along the Kedarnath Route, where he’s receiving regular wound dressings, specialised nutrition, and the medical care he needs to heal.

Recovery won’t happen overnight. But every meal, every dressing, and every day of care brings him one step closer to walking comfortably again.

Sponsor Bura’s monthly feed, nutrition, medical care, and recovery for ₹5,000/month.

Become a virtual adopter for an animal of your choice, at Happy Home Sanctuary.🤍

Every animal at Happy Home Sanctuary has a different story. Some were abandoned. Some were rescued from slaughter. Some were injured. Some were simply too vulnerable to survive alone.

What they all have in common is that they’ve found a home here.

Through our Virtual Adoption Programme, you can help us keep that promise alive. Your monthly sponsorship helps provide food, medical care, shelter, and lifelong support to the rescued animals who call this sanctuary home.

If you’d like to become a Forever Guardian for any animal here, call/WhatsApp +91 9520472207 to know more.

No mother should have to raise her baby while fighting to survive.

Just a day after giving birth on the Kedarnath route, Laali was abandoned by her owner. Left to fend for herself and her newborn, she struggled to find enough food and water.

Without proper nutrition, she couldn’t produce enough milk for her baby, who kept getting separated from her amidst the constant movement of horses and mules on the busy pilgrimage route.

When our team found them near Rudra Point, we knew they couldn’t be left behind.

Today, Laali and her baby are safe at our Equine Infirmary which is along the Kedarnath route, receiving nutritious food, veterinary care, and the support they need to recover and thrive.

One rescue gave this little family a second chance. Help us keep it that way.

Sponsor the monthly feed, nutrition, and care of Laali and her baby for ₹5,000/month each.

Scan the QR code to donate or WhatsApp +91 95204 72207 to become their sponsor.
