क्या कोई जलस्रोत सिर्फ़ पानी दे सकता है, या वह एक पूरी संस्कृति को भी संजो सकता है?

“नौला : उत्तराखंड की जल-संस्कृति का जीवंत प्रतीक” उत्तराखंड के पारंपरिक जलस्रोतों की उस कहानी को सामने लाता है, जिन्होंने पीढ़ियों से पहाड़ी समाज, संस्कृति और जीवन को सींचा है। यह लेख पिथौरागढ़ के शिक्षक, लेखक, कवि और घुमक्कड़ श्री महेश पुनेठा के दशकों के शोध और अनुभवों से प्रेरित है।

लेकिन नौलों की कहानी केवल पानी की कहानी नहीं है। यह समुदाय, पारंपरिक पारिस्थितिक ज्ञान और मनुष्य व प्रकृति के बीच बने उन रिश्तों की कहानी है, जहाँ एक का जीवन दूसरे से जुड़ा हुआ है। शायद यही Coexistence है—प्रकृति को अपने से अलग नहीं, बल्कि अपने जीवन का हिस्सा मानकर जीना।

यह लेख मल्लिकार्जुन पब्लिक स्कूल, पिथौरागढ़ के विद्यार्थी दिव्यांशु जोशी द्वारा श्री महेश पुनेठा से लिए गए एक साक्षात्कार पर आधारित है।

क्योंकि जब कोई नौला सूखता है, तो केवल पानी नहीं घटता—उसके साथ इतिहास, परंपरा और हमारे प्रकृति से जुड़े रिश्तों की कई धाराएँ भी कमजोर पड़ती हैं।

Meet this months young birder from Uttarakhand:

Ankit Singh Bisht
Ankit’s birding journey started with observing birds in the Haripura Dam in September 2024, with the Nature Science Initiative team. The birds at the dam located around 200m from his home left him fascinated. 15yr old Ankit, who studies in Grade 10 of GK Convent, is today the top e-birder from his district (Udham Singh Nagar)!!

But his journey doesn’t stop with him. Ankit actively encourages his friends and schoolmates to observe birds, helping more young people discover the life around them. Ankit is also spearheading grassroots efforts to save birds at Haripura, including the endangered Finns Weaver. By sharing what he has observed with his village community, he is helping his fellow villagers to understand and explore ways to coexist with birds, moths, butterflies and biodiversity.

जिया कठायत की यह संवेदनशील रचना हमें पहाड़ों को सिर्फ़ देखने नहीं, उन्हें सुनने की भी सीख देती है। बच्चों की कल्पनाओं, पहाड़ों की चुप्पी और प्रकृति के प्रति गहरे जुड़ाव से बुनी यह कहानी याद दिलाती है कि कभी-कभी सबसे महत्वपूर्ण आवाज़ें वही होती हैं जो शब्दों में नहीं सुनाई देतीं।

This month, we’re delighted to feature Divyanshu Chand, a Class 12 student from Nanakmatta Public School , as our very first Birder of the Month.

With a keen eye for birds and an ever-growing passion for understanding the natural world, Divyanshu reminds us that age is no barrier to making meaningful contributions to coexistence. Through patience, curiosity, and countless hours in the field, he has shown that young birders can become powerful voices for nature.

We hope his journey inspires more students to step outdoors, listen to birdsong, record their observations, and become active participants in citizen science.

लोककथाएँ केवल कहानियाँ नहीं होतीं, वे पीढ़ियों की स्मृतियाँ, रिश्तों की गर्माहट और पहाड़ों की आत्मा को अपने भीतर संजोए रखती हैं।
इस बार घुघुती बसूती पर पढ़िए भाई-बहन के प्रेम, भिटौली की परंपरा और उस लोकविश्वास की मार्मिक कथा, जिसने ‘घुघुती’ को उत्तराखंड की पहचान बना दिया।
जब भी पहाड़ों में घुघुती की पुकार सुनाई देती है, मानो सदियों पुरानी एक कहानी फिर से जीवित हो उठती है…
