A historic moment! 🐅🌿

On Day 1 of Wildlife Week, under the theme *“Connecting Habitats, Thriving Wildlife”* , tigers made a historic return to Buxa Tiger Reserve, West Bengal.

*The Hon’ble Union Minister, MoEFCC * and *The Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal * flagged off the release on 2 October 2026. Dr. Gobind Sagar Bhardwaj, Director, Wildlife Institute of India was present throughout and provided guidance.

The initiative was undertaken jointly by the *Department of Forests, Government of West Bengal* & *National Tiger Conservation Authority* , with the *Wildlife Institute of India providing scientific guidance and technical support* . From release to the field, WII’s scientific support continues through post-release monitoring, strengthening evidence-based management and long-term tiger conservation in Buxa.

A historic moment! 🐅🌿

On Day 1 of Wildlife Week, under the theme *“Connecting Habitats, Thriving Wildlife”* , tigers made a historic return to Buxa Tiger Reserve, West Bengal.

*The Hon’ble Union Minister, MoEFCC * and *The Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal * flagged off the release on 2 October 2026. Dr. Gobind Sagar Bhardwaj, Director, Wildlife Institute of India was present throughout and provided guidance.

Day 4 marked the concluding day of the 37th Professional Skill Upgradation Course for IFS Officers at the Wildlife Institute of India, bringing together discussions on wildlife conflict management, conservation decision-making and field-based wildlife management.

Dr. Parag Nigam, Scientist-G, delivered a session on Managing Wild Animal Conflict in Human-Dominated Landscapes, later
Dr. Tapendra Saini, Scientist-C joined to conducted a practical-oriented session on wild animal tranquilisation, discussing key considerations and approaches involved in the safe chemical restraint and handling of wildlife. Dr. Akansha Saxena WII, spoke on From Impact Assessments to Conservation Decisions: Evidence-Based Approaches to Conservation Solutions.

Dr.Abhijit Das, Scientist -E talked about Conservation Challenges in Amphibian & Reptiles.

Later, Dr.Bilal Habib, Scientist-F discussed about Human-Wildlife Conflict Management.
The programme also featured a panel discussion on Critical Perspectives on Modern Human-Wildlife Conflict Management, with Dr. Bilal Habib, Sh. Maria Christu Raja D., Dr. S. Sathyakumar and Sh. J. S. Chauhan & Dr.Ramesh Chinnasamy sharing their perspectives and experiences.

The four-day programme concluded with a session attended by Dr. Ruchi Badola, Dean, Sh. Maria Christu Raja D., Registrar ; Sh. M. Sudhagar, IFS, IGNFA and Dr.Ramesh Chinnasamy marking the completion of the module for the 85 participating IFS officers.

The programme was conducted with coordination support from the EIACP Programme Centre, WII.

Day 3 of the 37th Professional Skill Upgradation Course for IFS Officers at the Wildlife Institute of India focused on contemporary approaches to wildlife conservation, conflict management and evidence-based conservation planning.

Dr. Ramesh Chinnasamy, Scientist-E, introduced the new scheme for Sloth Bear Conservation and the Centre of Excellence for Human-Wildlife Conflict at WII-SACON. This was followed by Dr. Binoy B. V., Project Scientist, WII-SACON, who conducted an orientation and training session on the National Human-Wildlife Conflict Management Portal & Dashboard.

Dr. Nehru Prabakaran, Scientist-D, discussed Conservation vs Large Scale Developments: A Case Study from Andaman & Nicobar Islands. This was followed by Dr. Gopi G. V., Scientist-F, who delivered a session on From Impact Assessments to Conservation Decisions: Evidence-Based Approaches to Conservation Solutions.

The later sessions included Sh. Maria Christu Raja D., IFS, Registrar, on Dealing with Human-wildlife Conflict: A Managerial Perspective. Further, Sh. Bipin C. M., Project Manager, then presented the session Bringing Back the Cheetah to India. At the end Bilal Habib, Scientist-F, briefed the participating officers on the All India Tiger Monitoring and Estimation, providing insights into large-scale tiger population monitoring and assessment.

The programme, attended by 85 IFS officers, continued with coordination support from the EIACP Programme Centre, WII.

Day 2 of the 37th Professional Skill Upgradation Course for IFS Officers at the Wildlife Institute of India featured a series of expert-led sessions covering diverse aspects of wildlife and biodiversity conservation.

Dr. S. Sathyakumar, Former Scientist-G & Registrar, WII, discussed Wildlife Conservation in the Himalayas: Issues, Challenges and the Way Forward. Dr. J. A. Johnson, Scientist-F, spoke on Coastal and Marine Biodiversity of India: Conservation Challenges, followed by Dr. R. Suresh Kumar, Scientist-F, on Marine Turtles of the Indian Waters and their Conservation Challenges.

The afternoon sessions included Dr. Gopi G. V., Scientist-F, on Wetland Conservation and Management: Integrating Science, Policy and Practice in Addressing Emerging Challenges; Sh. Varun Kher, Scientist-C, on Indian Bustards: Tragedy and Hope; and Dr. C. P. Sharma, Principal Technical Officer, who conducted a session and demonstration on Crime Scene Investigation & Collection of Evidences.

The sessions provided the 85 participating IFS officers with perspectives spanning Himalayan, marine and wetland conservation, threatened species management and wildlife law enforcement.

The programme was supported by the EIACP Programme Centre, WII.
