Survival of the fittest? More like ultimate mountain roommates! 🏔️🐐

Winter in the Trans-Himalayas is brutal, and food is incredibly scarce. So, how do Blue Sheep and Ibex share the exact same mountain without competing for survival?

They split the real estate. 🏔️📉
The Ibex take the extreme, rugged cliffs for quick escape routes, while Blue Sheep claim the slightly greener, less rocky slopes. Same mountain, totally different survival strategies!

On occasion of Global Tiger day celebrations Hon’ble Minister Sh. Bhupender Yadav released report “Habitat suitability assessment for Sloth Bears across tiger landscape s in India.” According to report 231,899 km² of suitable habitat in tiger states, with approximately 20 %within tiger reserves. The Central India–Eastern Ghats is the principal stronghold, need for landscape-level conservation beyond protected areas.

The Wildlife Institute of India with the WII-EIACP Programme Centre, had the privilege of hosting the Entry Level Civil Service Officer Batch from the LBSNAA of the North-Eastern and Himalayan States/UTs on 24 July 2026 for an enriching study visit.

The participants interacted with WII scientists and experts, gained insights into India's wildlife conservation initiatives, and visited key facilities including the Wildlife Forensic Cell, UNESCO Category 2 Centre, and Pashmina Certification facility. The programme provided a valuable platform to showcase the role of science, research, and capacity building in supporting evidence-based conservation and environmental governance.

We thank all the participants for their enthusiastic engagement and wish them success in their journey as civil servants.

The Inception cm Planning Workshop on "Assessing Elephant Corridors, Habitat Utilization and Conflict Hotspots in the Bandhavgarh–Sanjay Landscape" was successfully held (17 July 2026) at Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh, marking the launch of a new National CAMPA-funded project. The workshop brought together senior officials from the Project Elephant Division, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), the Madhya Pradesh Forest Department, and scientists from the Wildlife Institute of India (WII). The event was graced by Dr. Sameeta Rajora, IFS (PCCF & Chief Wildlife Warden). Discussions focused on elephant colonization, habitat connectivity, human–elephant conflict mitigation, and advances in monitoring technologies, laying the foundation for a science-based conservation roadmap to secure long-term coexistence and connectivity across the Bandhavgarh–Sanjay Landscape.

On the occasion of World Snake Day (July 16TH), a Snake Identification and Awareness Program was conducted under the Madhya Pradesh Snake Project at the Government Higher Secondary Schools of Mocha and Bhilwani in Kanha Tiger Reserve. Around 150 students participated enthusiastically in the program. The session focused on snake diversity, identification of common snake species, their ecological importance, snakebite awareness, and snake conservation. Students actively interacted during the session and learned how to identify common snakes and respond safely when encountering them in the wild.

Mr. Yogesh Dansena, an M.Sc. student in Freshwater Ecology & Conservation (2024–2026 batch), studied "Assessing the impact of land-use change on the ecological integrity of lesser Himalayan streams using benthic macroinvertebrates" for his M.Sc. dissertation.

He investigated how urbanized streams with a high concentration of built-up areas exhibited the effects of "Urban Stream Syndrome," and he examined stream ecological functioning through macroinvertebrate functional feeding groups. The study found that streams dominated by built-up areas negatively affected riparian linkage, sediment transport, and channel stability. These findings highlight the importance of conserving riparian habitats and maintaining adequate riparian forests as buffers to preserve the stream's ecological integrity.
