Purkal Youth Development Society

Purkal Youth Development Society Est. in 2003 to Educate Needy and Deserving Children of Uttarakhand with aim of building Changemakers G.K. Mrs. and Mr. Two-thirds of these students are girls.

Purkal Youth Development Society (PYDS) was envisioned in 1998, by Mr. Swamy, to educate the needy and deserving children of Uttarakhand and help them become self-evolving models of community transformation. Swamy began by tutoring children in their homes along with feeding them nutritious snacks. Eventually, this led to the establishment of PYDS in 2003, which received CBSE affiliation till class

XII in 2013. Today, PYDS functions as a non-profit organization, supported by donations, and provides free education, meals, books, uniforms, transportation, and healthcare to over 500 students annually. PYDS also runs a residential accelerated learning program called Navjeevan, which mainstreams children from remote, upper reaches of Uttarakhand to middle school. Since its inception, Navjeevan has helped 95 children from 10 districts of the state. The On-to-Life (OTL) program of PYDS supports its students in securing scholarships and interest-free loans for higher education. To date, 153 students have been supported through OTL. The PYDS mission is to empower students for adequate employability, and the success of the 142 alumni who are employed is a testament to this.

🎉Interhouse Dance Competition👏

🎼The annual Interhouse Dance Competition is one of the most anticipated events of the school. The four houses: Amaltas (Yellow), Dhaak (Green), Gulmohar (Blue) and Kachnar (Red) compete against each other to win points for their house. 🎻

🎷Preparations began as early as April 15, and the four houses were divided between two dance teachers. Stealing hours from their course teachers, they put in determined effort to bring out the best in their students' talents. The themes for primary, middle and senior sections were western, tribal folk and sports storytelling, respectively.🥁

⭐The final performance was on 30th May, just before the school closed for summer vacations. From locking and popping of the tiny tots, sincere and challenging performances by sub-senior students and engaging storytelling involving some thrilling stunts by senior ones, the final performance was a culmination of hard work and ardent efforts shown by teachers, students and the resource persons. 💫

🌸While all the houses put in their best foot forward, it was the Kachnar house that swept the winning trophy away in all three categories. The prizes were distributed on 17 June during the assembly.💮

☘Remembering Swamy Sir🍀

💐On 11 June 2026, we reminisce about the work and ideals of our honourable and beloved founder, Mr Gopal Krishnan Swamy. Mr Swamy left an indelible impression on every life he touched. PYDS Learning Academy stands tall on the sturdy foundation created by his compassion, hard work, and indomitable spirit.🍃

🌟To mark the occasion, the students had organised a special assembly before the school closed on 30th May. During which two of the class XII students, Aashi and Himanshu, reflected on their interactions with him. Their speech inspired everyone to believe that a life lived for others is truly lived. 🌷

✨The school choir, along with the academic and administrative staff, organised a prayer meet in his warm memory. The event was also graced with the presence of Mrs Chinni Swamy, who joined us in remembering and cherishing the memories of Swamy Sir.🌹

🌻As we remember him today, we reaffirm our commitment to carrying forward his legacy of compassion, integrity, and service to society. His vision continues to inspire and guide generations of students, educators, and well-wishers. 🔅

🎉Eye Camp by Vivekanand Netralaya👏

🍀A two-day eye check-up camp was organised by Vivekanand Netralaya at our school on 22nd and 23rd May. A total of 409 students attended the camp to undergo eye examinations. The camp was also open to the administrative and support staff.
We were joined by Dr Chitrangda and Dr Madhu, along with their respective teams, who were available from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on alternate days.💫

🌺The doctors conducted detailed vision and corneal examinations for the students. While most students were prescribed general eye drops, a few requiring further diagnosis were referred to the hospital for additional consultation. Two students from the Navjeevan-8 batch were diagnosed with retinal displacement and were advised to undergo surgery at a more suitable age.🍀

🍃Conducted under the supervision of the school nurse, the camp concluded successfully. Students and staff alike received professional guidance from the doctors on maintaining good eye health and caring for their vision.🍂

Celebrating Mother’s Day in PYDS 🌸

On the occasion of Mother’s Day, a brief activity was conducted in the school in association with JK Paper Ltd. In their English session, students were asked to write a letter acknowledging and appreciating the love and care their mothers selflessly provide. 📝

Addressing their mothers as ‘My Supermom Forever’, the students, through their earnest words, expressed their love and gratitude for their mothers. They mentioned how they love the food their mothers cook for them. Some also praised how their mother is the backbone of the family. NJ-8, who are still in the early stages of developing their writing skills, chose Hindi as their medium. Their letters were laden with raw emotion. Mohit, for instance, asked her mother not to cry and worry about money too much. Gaurav mentioned how we enjoy the new games and Sunday movie sessions in the hostel. 🏠

We are thankful to JK Paper Ltd for organising this activity on the campus, allowing students to express their love for their mothers and acknowledge the huge role they play in shaping their lives. 💐🙌

😊S**C MACAY😄

On the quaint Thursday afternoon of 7th May, PYDS Learning hosted a distinguished Hindustani classical vocalist Pt. Bhuvanesh Mukul Komkali, in collaboration with S**C MACAY. Panditji was born into a rich legacy of music, grandson of renowned musician Pandit Kumar Gandharva, his musical journey began, unbeknownst to him, in infancy. 🎼

He was accompanied by Chetan Nigam on Harmonium, Shambhunath Bhattacharjee on Tabla & Varsha Bansiwal on Vocal support. The auditorium was brimming with curious and agile students of classes VIII, IX, X and XI, and music students of class XII, gathered to witness the performance. 🎤

Panditji opened the recital with an evocative rendition of Raga Multani, presenting a vilambhit khayal based on Teen Taal. Watching him perform, lost in the nuances of his music inspired a deep sense of sanctity and admiration amongst the audience. 🌼

He concluded his performance with a soulful bhaijan by Kabir titled ”Nirbhay Nirgun” which he sang in Mand style, indigenous to Rajasthan. His expressive folk style of singing transported the audience into a rustic pious world, evident by the endearing stillness felt in the hall.🌞

We are thankful to S**c Macay for this opportunity to host a legendary artist at PYDS and giving the students a chance to witness an enriching cultural experience and appreciate the beauty of Indian classical music.✨

Earth Day Celebration - 22 April 🌏

"Earth is our home, so green and bright, filled with rivers, trees, and light."
Gaurav Saini (8 B) recited this beautiful poem during a special morning assembly to mark the beginning of Earth Day. It set a thoughtful tone for the day, reminding us that healing nature begins with our small, everyday actions.

After the assembly, Grades 7 and 8 participated in a poster-making competition titled ‘Our Power, Our Planet’. Students used their creativity as a voice for nature. Faiza (7 A) drew a picture highlighting the difference between a clean, green world and a polluted one. These drawings depicted real conversations, inspiring students to consider different ways to protect Earth. Grades 1 to 5 brought their ideas to life through drawings during science sessions.

At Dehradun Zoo, Twenty of our students attended a special workshop conducted by Punaha Aranya in collaboration with the Dehradun Zoo and the Forest Department, Uttarakhand. The session highlighted the harsh reality of how plastic waste is damaging our beautiful mountains. Anshika (7 A) was shocked to learn that 100 kg of plastic was collected from the Himalayas in just one hour by Waste Warriors. She promised herself to dispose of her waste responsibly.

Our students also excelled in various activities, including oral presentation on ‘What Earth Day Means to me’, a quiz, and cloth bag painting. We are extremely proud of our winners.

✨National Science Day Celebrated with Zeal at PYDS🥳

🏅The National Science Day celebration at PYDS began with a special assembly organised by the Primary Section and Navjeevan. Kajal of NJ 7 delivered an insightful speech on the significance of the day, inspiring the young minds to cultivate scientific curiosity and rational thinking.🏆

🧬The celebration featured a variety of engaging activities, including a science exhibition, poster-making for primary students in the sports field, and a presentation followed by a quiz for senior students in the Auditorium. The programme was further enlivened by two impactful skits, Baba vs Science and Vedas to Vision, showcasing the importance of reasoning and traditional knowledge. The event concluded with a short speech by the head of the science faculty on the need to raise questions and seek answers to be able to discover and understand the world around us better.🔬

👨‍🏫Students also represented the school in the 17th Inter-School (Jr.) Science Quiz Competition ‘Quest’ and the 4th Change Maker Campaign. Vishaka and Ansh of Class VI A created a Smart Food Container, showcasing it in the competition, winning praise and encouragement. 👩‍🏫

🌼The day was a vibrant blend of learning and celebration, fostering creativity and inquisitiveness.🌸

⭐️Sitar Recital⭐️

🪕At regular intervals, the school organises cultural programmes to encourage students of the visual and performing arts to refine their skills. On February 24, the school had the privilege of hosting eminent sitar maestros Dr Murchana Adhikary Barthakur and Pandit Abhishek Adhikary, accompanied on the tabla by PYDS faculty member Shri Deepak Bhardwaj. The recital began with the serene afternoon raga Bhimpalasi, creating a meditative atmosphere. The artists then moved to Raag Bihag, often compared to English jazz for its fluid and expressive style, and concluded with the melodious Raag Bhairavi Dhun, which was greatly appreciated by the audience.🎤

🎼A proud and memorable moment was when the music students joined the maestros on stage. Deepanshu (Grade VIII) played the pakhawaj, supported by Ashutosh on the tabla, while vocalists Tanya Kalsi (Grade XI), Manshi Chauhan, Ranu (Grade IX), and Diya Joshi, Preeti, and Sonakshi Kohli (Grade VII) accompanied them. The students’ jugalbandi with such accomplished artists made the event truly inspiring and unforgettable.🎧

🌷Pushkin Chandra Memorial Competition🌹

✨The ability to read, speak and narrate is the foundational skill for young learners to become better communicators. Late Shri Anil Chandra ji, an Indian author devoted to children’s literature and moral storytelling, established the Pushkin Chandra Memorial Library in loving memory of his son, Late Shri Pushkin Chandra ji, and alongside it, envisioned a competition that would kindle in young minds the same love for language and expression that had defined his life’s work.💫

🧑🏻‍🏫This annual competition is organised for the primary section (classes I to V and NJ) across four segments: poetry recitation and storytelling, each in Hindi and English. Each segment was adorned with an evocative theme, such as Navrasa, the nine classical emotions of Indian aesthetics. Students brought their innocence and drama to the stage, with some standout performances from Shanvi of class I and Kushi of Navjeevan 7. The event concluded with an English role-play depicting the impact of social media, and the other, Hindi play, Vridhasharam, about our duty towards our elders. 🧑🏻‍🏫

🏆Through poems, stories and plays, participants brought alive the beauty of language and thought.🏅
