Devotee: "Does God exist? How can one see God?"
Sri Ramakrishna: "God really exists. You do not see any stars during the day, but that does not mean that the stars do not exist. There is butter in milk, but can anyone know it merely by sight?....If you want to catch fish in a pond, you have to learn the art of fishing from those who know it, and then you must sit patiently with a fishing rod, throwing the line into the water. Gradually the fish will grab your bait. Then, as soon as the float sinks, you can pull the fish to the shore. Similarly, you cannot realize God by a mere wish. Have faith in the instructions of a holy man. Make your mind like a fishing rod and your prana, or life-force, like a hook. Your devotion and japa are like the bait. Eventually you will be blessed by the vision of God."
भक्त: "क्या ईश्वर का अस्तित्व है? उन्हें कैसे देखा जा सकता है?"
श्रीरामकृष्ण: "ईश्वर सचमुच हैं — इसमें तनिक भी संदेह नहीं। दिन के उजाले में आकाश में तारे दिखाई नहीं देते, परंतु इसका अर्थ यह नहीं कि तारे हैं ही नहीं। दूध में मक्खन छिपा होता है, किंतु क्या केवल देखने मात्र से कोई उसे जान सकता है?
जैसे किसी तालाब में मछली पकड़नी हो, तो पहले किसी जानकार से मछली पकड़ने की कला सीखनी पड़ती है — फिर धैर्यपूर्वक बैठकर, बंसी डालकर, जल में डोर डालनी पड़ती है। धीरे-धीरे मछली चारा लेती है, और जैसे ही कांटे पर खिंचाव आए, मछली को किनारे खींच लो।
ठीक इसी प्रकार, केवल इच्छा मात्र से ईश्वर की प्राप्ति नहीं होती। किसी सिद्ध महापुरुष के वचनों पर दृढ़ विश्वास रखो। अपने मन को बंसी बनाओ, प्राण को काँटा बनाओ, और भक्ति तथा जप को चारा। अंततः ईश्वर का साक्षात्कार अवश्य होगा — यह निश्चित है।"
