Over five days in Parakha, Sikkim, the "Roots to Routes Workshop" brought together community members, facilitators and partners to explore what regenerative, community-led tourism could look like for the village.

An initiative by and SVEP Sikkim Govt., the workshop was about identity, permaculture, livelihoods and the larger vision of sustainable tourism in the region along with perspectives from the Tourism Department and conservationists.

From mapping the village’s strengths and challenges, waste management, hospitality practices, to safety, storytelling, and digital presence it was a reflection on how tourism can support rather than overwhelm local life and ecosystems.

If you believe tourism should strengthen communities and landscapes rather than exhaust them, follow along as the journey of Tieedi continues.

Meet the Alnus nepalensis, aka the Nepalese Alder, Uttis in Nepali, a straight-up ecological MVP of the Himalayas.

This nitrogen-fixing tree literally pulls nitrogen from the air and locks it into the soil through its roots, enriching the earth and helping other plants thrive. That means healthier soil, stronger forests, and better food webs.

Uttis is also a pioneer species that stabilises slopes and prevents erosion with its deep roots, helps support agroforestry systems (like boosting cardamom yields when planted as shade trees), and fuels local livelihoods with wood, fodder and more.

In this episode of Everyday Environmentalism, we’re unpacking why this underrated gem deserves way more love.
