Empowering public education system We work in Dantewada, the tribal district of Chhattisgarh which has been affected by the left-wing extremism since a decade.

Bachpan Banao is a youth organization driven by the values of humanity, participation, collaboration and respect for all leading towards an inclusive society. One of the biggest causality has been the kids and their education. Believing in Mahatma Gandhi philosophy of community taking ownership of its institutions we work toward empowering the public education system in the tribal area. As part of

the program we are working with stakeholders in the education space to bring in the quality improvement in the education delivery. Our key programs have been:
• Model School Development through Bachpan Banao Fellowship
• Community Empowerment and participation by strengthening School Management Committees
• Promoting science education
• Working with the government stakeholders (teachers, administrative officers, DIET )toward improvement in process adherence, monitoring and capacity building. Our approach to all the programs has been facilitation instead of authoritative or instructional. The idea is to see the issues in schools from the eyes of the local stakeholders in Dantewada and then based on the available competencies and resources design customized solutions for the same.

In the slow summer afternoons of Dantewada, beneath the shade of mango trees, children gather with books in their hands and whole worlds in their imaginations.🌞

With tiny fingers turning worn pages, they become explorers, dancers, teachers, kings, birds, and storytellers. They travel long distances without moving an inch, weaving new stories, discovering unfamiliar worlds, and finding pieces of themselves along the way. Sometimes the loudest journeys begin in complete silence, with a child and a book sitting side by side.👫📚

At Baal Mitra Pustakalaya Evam Gatividhi Kendra, these moments are more than reading sessions. They are spaces where childhood breathes freely, friendships deepen, confidence grows, and imagination finds a home.💖

This summer, the villages of Dantewada are turning into reading villages 📚✨

Across all panchayats, our BaalMitra children Libraries cm Activity Centres are gearing up for the Summer Reading Challenge 2026.

We will read stories.
We will listen to poems.
We will paint, draw, sing, laugh and create together.

Because reading is not homework.
Reading is joy.
Reading is imagination.
Reading is friendship. ❤️

From para to para, children will gather under trees, in libraries, courtyards and community spaces — making this summer full of stories and smiles.

They travelled all the way from Bangalore to share their lived stories with our Baal Mitras, opening gentle yet honest conversations around gender, identity, and empathy.🏳️‍🌈
Through real voices and real experiences, our fellows learned what textbooks often cannot.

Reaching Every Child vs. Ensuring Quality – A Journey We Navigate Daily

At Bachpan Banao, in collaboration with the District Administration Dantewada, we run children's libraries cm activity centres across sparsely populated villages of Dantewada district in the Bastar region.

Every day, we ask ourselves – should we try to reach every child in every corner, or focus deeply on a few with good-quality activities? It’s a constant struggle – wide access sometimes risks quality, but we continue to find a path that balances both.

This summer, all our library activity centres are running a Summer Reading Program. The goal is to build language skills through books – by connecting reading with games, drawing, and other creative activities.

Here’s a glimpse from Midko Para of Gamawada village, where our Balamitra Fellow Saraswati Bhaskar took the library to children’s doorsteps. To reach Midko Para, she had to cross a nala (small canal). She then went door to door, mobilised children, played games, introduced them to books, and led drawing activities based on the stories. You can also see Sonal in the pictures – a second-year MA Education student from Azim Premji university, Bhopal, who is currently doing her internship with Bachpan Banao.

In the end, children were smiling, curious, and happy – and so were we.

We are committed to taking quality children’s literature and joyful learning experiences to every corner, one village at a time.

Monthly Learning Workshop for Bala Mitra Fellows

On January 11, 2025, a monthly learning workshop was organized at Chitalanka Library under the Bala Mitra Youth Leadership Program for fellows from Dantewada and Geedam blocks.

The Bala Mitra program is unique because, while it focuses on children, it also empowers youth. Through this two-year fellowship, the youth work for the well-being of children in their villages while acquiring life skills, employability skills, and 21st-century competencies.

In this workshop, fellows explored the topics "Why is it important to dream?" and "My Dreams - My Needs." They also learned how to improve their language skills by reading online newspapers.

Such initiatives are helping build a stronger and more capable generation of youth and children in the community.

On this special occasion of , we proudly salute the tribal youth of Dantewada who are tirelessly working to bring positive changes in their villages and communities.

Through the , young leaders from 67 gram panchayats are not only developing their leadership skills but also creating impactful stories of change by directly engaging with children and addressing community issues.

This two-year fellowship empowers them to become active citizens, and they are the first generation of change-makers from their villages, driving transformation through education and leadership.

These inspiring youth run libraries cm activity centers to foster a love for learning among children, engage parents in parenting circles, and collaborate with panchayat-level elected representatives to build child-friendly villages. Alongside, they raise awareness on crucial issues such as sanitation, child rights, environmental conservation, and gender equality.

Their mission goes beyond personal growth—they are committed to uplifting their villages, preserving their cultural heritage, and ensuring a better future for children. Their dedication is a source of pride for Dantewada, driving the district toward greater heights of development.

Let us all take a moment to recognize, appreciate, and support these youth leaders. Their small steps are laying the foundation for big changes, inspiring a brighter future for society.

This Youth Day, let’s pledge to be part of their journey and contribute to realizing their dreams of a better tomorrow.

सावित्रीबाई फुले जयंती पर विशेष:

सच्ची शिक्षा वह है जो इंसान को खुद को और अपने सामाजिक व सांस्कृतिक परिवेश को समझने और बदलने की शक्ति दे। केवल कौशल सिखाना शिक्षा का उद्देश्य नहीं है, बल्कि व्यक्ति को स्वतंत्र सोच, तर्क और मानवता की ओर प्रेरित करना ही असली शिक्षा है।

महिलाओं, श्रमिकों और वंचित समुदायों को यह सशक्त शिक्षा मिले, यही आधुनिक मुक्ति आंदोलनों की पहली सीढ़ी है। इस मार्ग को दिखाने वाले थे ज्योतिबा फुले और इस पथ पर दीप जलाने वाली थीं सावित्रीबाई फुले।

सावित्रीबाई फुले, जो पहली महिला शिक्षिका और समाज सुधारक थीं, ने महिलाओं और दलितों को शिक्षा के माध्यम से समानता और स्वतंत्रता का मार्ग दिखाया। भारत हमेशा उनके इस योगदान का ऋणी रहेगा।

आज उनके जन्मदिन पर, हम उस महान आत्मा को नमन करते हैं।

We are thrilled to share the inspiring journey of Ayang Trust, Majuli, Assam, as they take another significant step in promoting local literature and culture. Starting with children’s libraries in Majuli Island, they’ve worked to create spaces for local communities, literature, and stories. Their latest milestone—launching the children’s magazine Hatipoti in the Missing language—is truly remarkable.

It was an honor for us at Bachpan Banao to witness this launch at Eklavya Pitara. Ayang’s journey motivates us as we work to include more Gondi and Halbi books in our libraries. Congratulations, Ayang Trust, for this incredible achievement!
