The (CCIs) in Coonoor had the unique opportunity to visit the Madras Regimental Centre (MRC) during the Army Wives Welfare Association Day celebration. As part of their celebrations, MRC extended an invitation to us.
From our Boys’ Home, 24 boys and 4 staff members participated, and from Girls’ Home, 25 girls and 3 staff members joined the visit.
Our tour began at the MRC’s main building, where a Subedar provided an insightful explanation of the Madras Regimental Centre’s history, including the reasons behind its establishment and the costs involved. We were warmly welcomed by some of the soldiers in training, who performed a parade for us.
Next, we explored different terrains used for training soldiers and learned about their operations in various war conditions. We came across a cemetery, a Shivalinga, and a Dargah. The Subedar explained that these serve as guiding symbols for soldiers lost or disoriented during battle.
Following this, we were taken to a dark room where the Subedar demonstrated how soldiers navigate at night using the stars, the moon, and the pole star. His explanation of celestial navigation and its importance during wartime was fascinating.
The visit concluded with a tour of the MRC Museum, where we experienced life-like murals and artifacts. The museum’s engaging storytelling, supported by innovative digital technologies and multilingual audio guides, offered a guided exploration of the regiment’s history, stories of bravery, and the accomplishments of the Veer Thambis. The highlight of the museum was the Siachen model with its 3D projection mapping, a unique tribute to the soldiers guarding this extreme frontier.
By interacting with soldiers and learning about their discipline, bravery, and commitment, the children gained role models who exhibit values like courage, teamwork, and resilience. This exposure to individuals who have dedicated their lives to protecting the nation inspired the children to work hard and pursue meaningful goals in their own lives.
