Thought for the Day

Jesus straightened up and asked [the woman caught in the act of adultery], "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?"

"No one, sir," she said.

"Then neither do I condemn you," Jesus declared. "Go now and leave your life of sin."

John 8:10-11

Thoughts on Today's Verse...

Forgiveness is wonderful when it leads to a life change that honors the Lord. Jesus came to call us from sin and into his presence. When we turn our back on our previous sins and let him remove our shame and condemnation, he is greatly pleased and we are wonderfully blessed. He gave us grace to not only be forgiven of our past sins but also to call us away from that sin and into a life of productive service, service which he planned for us and designed us to do (Ephesians 2:1-10). We are not just saved FROM something horrible; we are saved FOR something wonderful!

My Prayer...

O Lord my God, you are holy and gracious in all your ways. So, dear Father, please transform my heart and life so I can live in your divine will. Please give me the assurance of forgiveness, confidence in my deliverance from shame, and courage in my future with you so I can leave my sin behind and embrace the life of productive service you have prepared for me to do. In Jesus' name, I ask you for your gracious and unlimited power to mold my heart and shape my life into a clearer reflection of Jesus, in whose name I pray. Amen.

Thought for the Day

My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense — Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.

1 John 2:1-2

Thoughts on Today's Verse...

John wants to prevent even one sinful event in the lives of those he loves and those who seek to honor Jesus. He is concerned because he knows that even one sinful event can be used by Satan to discourage and defeat us and hurt those we influence. We need to know that we have a Savior and a defender. This Savior, this Defender, paid the price to redeem us. He sent his Spirit to help us overcome sin's power. He is our intercessor who will speak to the Father and claim that right to forgive us and make us holy and make us his!

My Prayer...

Father, I'm embarrassed by my weakness and vulnerability to sin. Even in those moments of shame, I'm thankful that Jesus provided me the way back into your holy presence. Jesus, I thank you for coming to my rescue and my defense. I will not let Satan discourage me when I trip, stumble, and fall. Instead, I re-commit myself to live with your character and for your glory. In your name, Lord Jesus, my righteous defender, I pray. Amen.

Thought for the Day

But go and learn what this means: I desire mercy, not sacrifice. For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.

Matthew 9:13

Thoughts on Today's Verse...

God is merciful. Yes, we can probably recall some of those occasions when God was fed up and furious with the unrighteousness and rebellion of his people. But, we also remember them precisely because they did not occur that frequently over the hundreds of years he led the Israelites. God has shown us his heart by being gracious and forgiving with his ungrateful and forgetful people. God revealed his heart to us in Jesus' compassion as the Lord dealt with sick, broken, grieving, and sinful people in his earthly ministry. God has demonstrated his mercy and love with you and me by calling us, while we are sinners, to his side and to bring us salvation (Romans 5:5-11). He will not leave us unchanged and content with our sins. Yes, he does call us to change our ways. However, the generosity, mercy, and love of the almighty God, ruler of heaven and ear! th, to invite us near and give us a chance to experience his mercy is almost too good to be true — no wonder this same God calls us to share his mercy, love, and grace with others. We have been blessed to be a blessing (Genesis 12:1-3; 2 Corinthians 9:10-15).

My Prayer...

Thank you, Almighty God, for being tender as well as powerful, forgiving as well as righteous, and merciful as well as holy. Please mature me in these sets of character-defining traits. I don't want to be self-righteous but righteous. I don't want to be a bully, but compassionately strong. I don't want to be sanctimonious but loving and merciful. Please fill me with your Spirit and gently confront me in those areas that need growth and transformation. May others see in me a reflection of you and your righteous character, gracious compassion, and faithful lovingkindness. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.

Thought for the Day

People were bringing little children to Jesus to have him touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these."

Mark 10:13-14

Thoughts on Today's Verse...

Unfortunately, humans seem to always try to define our place in the "pecking order" of life. Jesus reminds his disciples that they have to throw away the everyday rules of the pecking order if they are to be part of his JesuShaped Kingdom. He was angry with them because they denied toddlers access to him, apparently because his disciples didn't deem the little ones worthy of their Master's time, energy, and attention. Jesus, as he so often did, turned their common worldly values upside down and reminded them they needed to pay more attention to the character of toddlers than their sense of self-importance. They would never understand God's Kingdom and live like their Lord if they didn't.

My Prayer...

Father, thank you for valuing me as your child. Re-awaken my sense of wonder, an attitude of humility, and reverential awe of you as I seek to live for you and your Kingdom! I pray in Jesus' name, and to be transformed to become like him. Amen.

Thought for the Day

Can a man walk on hot coals without his feet being scorched?

Proverbs 6:28

Thoughts on Today's Verse...

I don't know where you are, but this time of year, it's really hot where we live. You don't have to worry about hot coals; try the sidewalk! But this reminder about scorching coals is good for us all. We get to feeling so strong inside spiritually we slack off our spiritual focus with Jesus. That's when we are easily seduced by a "favorite" temptation, especially when we assume we can flirt with what is sinful. But the Holy Spirit reminds us through the Wise Man, Solomon, that when we flirt with evil and willingly expose ourselves to temptation, we will eventually get burned. We can't play with hot coals when we have bare souls, and we mustn't flirt with temptation when we know that Satan can burn us again and again for our sinful and rebellious mistakes!

My Prayer...

Almighty God, loving Father and tender Shepherd, please forgive me. I confess that sometimes I allow myself to flirt with what is not wholesome, right, and holy. Thank you for often delivering me from my stupidities in this area — flirting with temptation and exposing myself to what is spiritually destructive. Please bless me with strength, wisdom, and renewed conviction as I seek to offer myself wholly and completely to you and as I seek to flee what is dangerous and sinful. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Thought for the Day

Some of the Jews were persuaded [by the preaching of the Gospel] and joined Paul and Silas, as did a large number of God-fearing Greeks and quite a few prominent women.

Acts 17:4

Thoughts on Today's Verse...

Women have always played an essential role in the work of God. This was especially true in the first century in Macedonia and Achaia (Philippi, Thessalonica, Berea, Athens, and Corinth). In each of these places, the Gospel touched many of the leading women of the community. We know they played essential roles in supporting the missionary enterprise (Lydia — Acts 16:15, 40) and sharing the Gospel with those around them (Euodia and Syntyche — Philippians 4:2-3). So please take time today to let a godly woman in your congregation know how important she is to the Lord's work and to you.

My Prayer...

Almighty God, thank you for godly women of faith. Please bless them and their ministries and make their efforts powerfully effective and a gracious blessing to others as they bring you glory. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

27/07/2023

Thought for the Day

Teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good.

Titus 2:3

Thoughts on Today's Verse...

"Teach... to teach!" We need faithful women who reverence God in Jesus' family. We need them to demonstrate how to reverence God in our daily lives through their Christ-like character. They need our encouragement "to teach what is good" for our coming generations. We should pray that such women step forward and mentor others in godliness as we respect their reverent lifestyles. As for those of us such women have blessed, we must thank God for them and hold them up as examples to others in Jesus' family!

My Prayer...

Holy and righteous Father, please raise up women of godly character and faithful service. Please give us the eyes to see their reverent lives and hearts that hold them as dear examples for your people. Thank you for the many godly women in our Christian heritage who have had tremendous impact for good — women like Deborah, Esther, Mary, Dorcas, and Priscilla. I also want to thank you for those godly women who have made such a tremendous difference in my life and taught me so much about faith, hope, and love. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.

Thought for the Day

[The Lord, the everlasting God,] gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.

Isaiah 40:29

Thoughts on Today's Verse...

Even the most pumped-up, excited, and optimistic among us can find ourselves broken, discouraged, and weary when facing challenging times in our lives. It isn't hard to believe and follow Jesus when we are soaring on eagles' wings or running and not growing weary in our walk with God. Often the most challenging time to keep our faith vibrant, however, is when we try to keep putting one foot in front of the other while not fainting. The Lord is often the most real, powerful, and present in those moments of absolute powerlessness, weakness, and brokenness. So, let's pray to recognize his presence.

My Prayer...

Thank you, God, for sustaining me and keeping my faith alive when the evil one attacked me and I grew weary with life's challenges and hardships. Please give those I love the strength to press on even though they are weary and weak... (Pray for specific people you know need God's help to press on with life!) O, God, please be present and experienceable in their lives to let them know that you are coming with grace to help and redeem them as their Great Deliverer. In Jesus' name, I ask this. Amen.

Thought for the Day

Do not cast me away when I am old; do not forsake me when my strength is gone.

Psalm 71:9

Thoughts on Today's Verse...

We live in an age where those who are older are often shoved aside, ignored, and forgotten. This is true in the professional world with employees and advancement. This is also true in churches which often find themselves pandering to those who are younger or more financially powerful while forgetting the aging, widowed, and powerless. Let's remember that God cares what happens to each one of us, no matter our status, stature, or age. Let's treat each other with love and kindness regardless of our age.

My Prayer...

Almighty God, I know that promised never leave or forsake me (Hebrews 13:5-6). I believe your promise that nothing can separate me from your love for me in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:32-39). But Father, I see so many who are older and forgotten that I must admit that I am a bit frightened that I, too, will face loneliness and feebleness as I grow older. Please give me the confidence to cast my anxieties on you and trust in your loving presence (1 Peter 5:7). Father, I pray that you will be glorified in my body in life and death, health and sickness, and youth and age. In Jesus' glorious name, I pray. Amen.

Thought for the Day

In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.

Acts 2:17

Thoughts on Today's Verse...

As those living in the last days, each believer — young and old, male and female — must be Spirit-led and Spirit-empowered to give our personal testimony to the grace of God given us in Jesus Christ. As Jesus prayed for us before his death (John 17:20-23), we must be united across gender barriers, age barriers, and racial barriers as God's children (Galatians 3:26-29) if the world is ever to truly know that he sent his Son as Savior for all people of our world!

My Prayer...

God of all nations, please help us break down the barriers that divide us. Jesus helped us understand that our division blunts the beautiful message of your grace. Please pour your Spirit upon us and convict us of our prejudice and selfishness. Replace them with your transcending love displayed in our unity. Forgive us, forgive me, when shortsighted selfishness interferes with the world seeing your united people proclaiming Jesus as Lord and Savior. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

Thought for the Day

Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old.

Proverbs 23:22

Thoughts on Today's Verse...

"Honor your father and mother..." (Exodus 20:12) is one of God's Ten Commandments. This is basic to God's plan for our lives. Families must be built on God's covenant of grace. Children learning to respect and obey their parents brings many blessings to the family, community, and culture. This early parental training helps children with the self-discipline they need throughout their lives. As adults, we preserve the dignity of our parents and teach our children important life lessons when we honor and respect our parents appropriately. Let's not get swept up in our era of parent-bashing and laisse fair child-rearing. Let's bless our parents in ways that honor God and teach our children to do the same. (If your parents were ungodly or abusive, find older folks in your church family for your emotional and spiritual support while treating your physical parents with honesty, ! respect, and integrity as much as possible and honorable.)

My Prayer...

Loving Father and eternal God, thank you for my parents — physical and spiritual. Bless them with what they most need to find their way home to you. Please give me the wisdom to know the most appropriate way to show my love and respect to my parents. Most of all, Father, please help them to see that my love and character come from you. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

Thought for the Day

Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. Then it was said among the nations, "The Lord has done great things for them."

Psalm 126:2

Thoughts on Today's Verse...

So many of us are so richly blessed — if not by physical and financial blessings, then most definitely by God's gracious spiritual blessings. And his promises for the future give our lives even more meaning. The Lord has done great things for us! Let's honor him with songs of praise and lives full of laughter and joy!

My Prayer...

Generous and gracious Father, thank you so much for the many ways you have blessed me. Your gift of salvation through your Son Jesus is incredible and gives me hope and confidence for the future. May all the physical and financial blessings you've shared with me bring glory to you, not me! In Jesus' name. Amen.
