The Nature and Butterfly Society - TNBS The Nature and Butterfly Society (TNBS) records, conserves, and educates on Butterflies of Tamil Nadu

The Nature and Butterfly Society (TNBS) is aiming and working to systematically collect and record number of butterfly species occurring in the state of Tamil Nadu in various habitats and in various times of the year. Towards this end, systematic data is being collected for more than 6 years now mainly through personal efforts of members through Butterfly walks held in various habitats. Geographic

ally, the Western, Southern and the North Western parts of Tamil Nadu are hilly and rich in vegetation. The Western Ghats and the Eastern Ghats meet at the Nilgiri hills. The Western Ghats dominate the entire western border with Kerala, effectively blocking much of the rain bearing clouds of the South West monsoon from entering the state. The Eastern parts are fertile Coastal Plains and the Northern parts are a mix of hills and plains. The Central and the South-Central regions are arid plains and receive less rainfall than the other regions (Source: WIKI). It is quite natural that Tamil Nadu with its varied habitat can house maximum of species that occur in Peninsular India. No recent systematic survey of the state has been done on Butterflies and the list of butterflies available on-line for Tamil Nadu is a just a copy of Kerala (this needs to be validated too). Hence, a systematic and organized way of collecting butterflies is the need of the hour as most of the species are expected to occur primarily in the hills and foothills of Western and Eastern Ghats. As a result, data collected will be incomplete without these being properly studied and surveyed.

Happy 11th Anniversary!

Tamilnadu Butterflies Facebook group is successfully marching towards our 12th Year

The Facebook group was started on 02 Oct 2014 to explore, document, and spread awareness to the people about the least documented fauna of butterflies from Tamil Nadu. We have seen constant growth and progress in this data-building exercise. Today, by the end of the 9th year, we currently have 2300+ members contributing 40000+ posts from 38 Districts of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry which has helped us to create a repository to validate 326 species of butterflies. We have also explored and opened many new butterfly Hotspots in our state. We hope our activities in this group have inspired people to take butterflying seriously and bring out some surprising discoveries from Tamil Nadu.
Thank you to all our members for your kind support and constant encouragement through various postings, discussions, and suggestions. We look forward to continuing to work together to discover more new information on butterflies.

Thanks and Best Regards

As part of Coimbatore Vizha in November 2024, TNBS and CNS organized a birding and butterfly walk at Kovai Kutralam. The event saw an enthusiastic turnout of 20 participants, most of whom were new to the world of butterflies, along with 8 dedicated volunteers. The session began with Mr. Selvaraj sharing insights into birds and CNS followed by Mr. Pavendhan introducing butterflies and TNBS.

The walk began at 7:30 AM amidst a light morning haze, which later cleared to reveal a bright, sunny day. Over the course of the event, we recorded an impressive 71 butterfly species, including highlights such as the Clipper, Indian Tawny Rajah, Tamil Yeoman, and Short-Banded Sailor and 56 bird species with notable sightings including the Common Flameback, Lesser Yellownape, Malabar Trogon, and the Great Hornbill.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all participants and volunteers from TNBS and CNS who made this event a success. Special thanks to Mr. Ramanasaran Hari , Mr. Nishanth .cv , Mr. Prakash , Mr. Sravan Kumar K , Dr Sahithya for their seamless coordination, and Mr. Balaji .p.b for their invaluable support.
