“Justice Denied, Grief Assaulted”: TNL Condemns Security Operation on Mourning Konsakhul Village

Ukhrul, June 17:
THE Working Committee of the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) has strongly condemned the large-scale security operation conducted at Konsakhul (Konsaram), a Liangmai Naga village in Manipur, describing the action as “atrocious, disgraceful, inhuman and highly condemnable” in the aftermath of the brutal killing of six Naga villagers allegedly by cadres of the Kuki National Front-Presidential (KNF-P).
In a press communiqué issued on Wednesday, the TNL Working Committee expressed outrage over what it termed a deeply insensitive operation carried out against a community still reeling from one of the most horrific tragedies in recent memory.
The controversy stems from the abduction of 18 Liangmai Naga civilians, including women and children, on May 13 at Leilon Vaiphei village. According to TNL, the victims were allegedly waylaid and kidnapped by armed KNF-P cadres in connivance with local village authorities and residents. While 12 women hostages and two Salesian priests abducted from Saparmeina were subsequently released in exchange for 14 detained Kukis at Senapati, six Liangmai Nagas—including church leaders and community workers—remained in captivity.
Their fate ended in tragedy. Nearly a month later, the mutilated bodies of the six victims were reportedly recovered near Leilon Vaiphei and handed over to state authorities on June 10, sending shockwaves across Naga communities.
Describing Konsakhul as a “victim village,” the TNL said the community is still mourning the loss of its loved ones and awaiting the return of their mortal remains for customary burial rites. The organisation further alleged that the village continues to face repeated threats and attacks from armed Kuki militant groups operating under the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement.
“Instead of ensuring justice for the victims and pursuing the perpetrators of this heinous crime, the authorities have chosen to launch an operation against a grieving community,” the statement said, adding that the action amounted to “rubbing salt into the wounds” of bereaved families.
The TNL questioned the government’s intentions, arguing that the actual perpetrators of the abduction and killings remain at large while security forces acted swiftly against villagers seeking justice. The organisation alleged that the government’s response reflected bias and a lack of commitment to addressing the root causes of the crisis.
Demanding immediate action, the TNL Working Committee called upon the State and Central authorities to arrest all those involved in the abduction and murder of the six villagers. It urged that the accused and their accomplices be prosecuted under the law and awarded exemplary punishment for what it described as a “crime against humanity.”
The organisation further appealed for a tangible and just resolution to the ongoing standoff arising from the killings, warning that lasting peace can only be achieved through accountability and justice.
