Paddle for Future

Paddle for Future Paddle for Future program strives to conserve these water bodies through research, education and sports.
(1)

An initiative by PaddleforFuture to protect the numerous lakes and ponds, wetlands, rapid urbanisation and poor waste management, changing lifestyle these water bodies are declining and getting reduced into garbage dump yards. These water body ecosystems are very critical for remaining flora, fauna and aquifer recharge, water supply. With a team of Environmentalists, Fitness experts, Engineers, Ge

ologists, Herpetologists and Zoologists, Paddle for change program fights to conserve our waterbodies for our future generations by inspiring a personal connection to the environment and help develop the actions to sustain it. Over the last 6 years we have
Reached more than 8000 school kids on special focus for government run schools through workshops, outdoor learning programs which asserts on the importance of being connected to nature. Tons of trash through coordinated mass clean ups and daily clean up by employing locals on daily wages, providing employment opportunities and leaving behind a cleaner water bodies. Introduced and conducted numerous free discover paddleboarding sessions. These sessions engaged urban citizens in understanding water bodies and their relationship with it. Eye-opener session which encouraged more people to step outside their comfort zone and attempt an ‘adventure in their backyard’, mobilised young people engagement in civic issues via adventure and finally showcasing the immense accessibility of the SUP sport (the fastest growing water sports in the world!) as a means of creating additional Eco-tourism opportunities in India’s great outdoors. Upcoming paddle for change program – Green cover initiative, program to plant and maintenance of native tree species around water bodies using local residents.

A few years ago, we stepped into a neglected and bit polluted lake near Tamil Nadu Sports University through the Paddle for Future program.

That’s where we met Manoj
then a student with curiosity and drive.

What began as a simple introduction to SUP and kayaking grew into something bigger. Manoj opened another door for us — K1 kayaking.

Manoj went on to complete his PG in Sports, train at SAI Kerala, compete & be coach at State and National levels, and build a kayaking team from scratch.

Also worked as a senior water sports instructor at our .

Today, he assumes the role of a Kayaking Coach (Permanent) at SDAT — but more significantly, he's fostering foundational transformation in paddling disciplines and facilitating opportunities for children keen on paddle sports..

Proud to have shared this journey with him.
From a forgotten lake to shaping future paddlers. 🚣‍♂️🌊

Cheers

Teaser - the Story of Paddleforfuture

For over a year, we’ve been shaping a short documentary about Paddle for Future.

This is not my story.
It’s our story — a community coming together to protect inland water bodies through human-powered sports like stand-up paddling and kayaking.

Told in four quick parts,
it’s a glimpse into our purpose, our people, and our passion.

Heartfelt thanks to our team, family, friends, community members, event organizers, and the sports fraternity.

Special thanks to .in for bringing it to life through videography and post-production, and to for the teaser rework.
In a world that moves fast, we chose to tell our story short — but meaningful.

Cheers,
Kumaran Mahalingam 🌊

In this fast-paced world, being constantly connected is not a choice, it is a mandatory obligation.
At , we provide you the opportunity to disconnect and embrace a slow-paced living. We don’t just take you across the river, we travel with you to it. This way, we help you establish a connection to nature. This is our token of gratitude to the river, the mangroves, and the wildlife around us. Do come visit us and paddle in the mighty river, lounge on our dock and gaze at the clear night skies, and be enthralled by the majesty of the glorious dawn!

At Mangrove Bay Ecocamp, we explore the waters through kayaking and stand-up paddling alone. By being completely human-powered, we ensure that we do not disturb the river and the surrounding ecosystem.

Our events are timed according to the tides of the river. We maintain a strict safety-first policy; our camp staff will ensure that every single person is well equipped with safety gear and are given the proper induction before stepping out into the river. This way, your experience is both safe and enjoyable.

If you are searching for a place where the view of the night sky is undisturbed by any light pollution yet not too isolated from the city, Mangrove Bay Ecocamp is a great choice for you with having Rural Sky as per index.

Partnering with stargazing experts , we conduct regular stargazing sessions wherein one can see constellations and stars one never knew existed. Watching the celestial bodies move around you while you lie on the banks of the river is an experience that can only be felt.

The only coastal camp having regular stargazing events since 2020 in India.

Kollidam mangroves is a haven for migratory and native birds more than ~47 bird species that call wetlands home.

Over the years, systematic removal of w**d plants and increase of native plants & trees in and around over camp helped the birds to have healthy habitat.

The dense marshland soil becomes heavenly for microorganisms, flora, and fauna to thrive. At Mangrove Bay Ecocamp, one can find birds everywhere, from nesting in the distant mangroves across the river to drinking nectar from the hibiscus plant next to our kitchen. As we paddle along the river, we can encounter different birds going by their day as we go by ours.

We have been part of the fieldwork for a survey confirming the presence of Smooth-coated otters in the mangroves of Kollidam River, conducted by Research Scholar from A.V.C. College, Mayiladuthurai. Request the reader to search internet for Otters of Kollidam river to find our scientific work.

Paddleforfuture for years, training students in outdoor skills esp

- Surveying flora and fauna through paddling sports. Paddling allows observers to observe the wildlife habitat very close with very minimal interference when compared to motor or fishermen boats.
- Wildlife camera setup and data analysis
- Wildlife and Night / poor light photography
and outdoor skills sets

The otter numbers have increased from ~8 to ~ 20 in 6 years. To conserve the wetland fauna such as otters, we ensure that we do maintain the mangrove cover, do not pollute the waters, and minimize light pollution so that their natural behaviours are not disturbed.

Our camp is located within two of the most complex ecosystems, the river and the mangroves. This gives us a vast field to learn and understand.

We collaborate with geologists, scientists, researchers, marine biologists, subject matter experts, herpetologists, ornithologists, wildlife enthusiasts, and most importantly the native people of the land – the fisher folk and farmers to learn better about the ecosystem. The data collected is used to plan and conduct events.

The only watersports school in India to maintain the local weather and kollidam river conditions database which in turn helped us to design and implement "EARLY FLOOD DETECTION AND MITIGATION" to safely operate during flood and adverse natural conditions.

Mangroves are the lifeline of every coast.

When we decided to set up the camp amidst the mangroves, we were very careful to ensure that there is no compromise on the forest cover. We periodically replant mangrove saplings, remove invasive species and w**ds to make up for any habitat loss that occurs due to natural or manmade causes. Through paddling, we take you to places within the mangroves that one can otherwise not access.
