Empowering the Irula Tribal Children of Tiruvallur – A Call to Act

In the outskirts of Tiruvallur District lives one of India’s most marginalized communities – the Irula tribal population, officially classified as a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG).

Despite being rich in traditional knowledge, especially in areas like natural resource understanding and indigenous practices, the Irula community continues to face severe challenges:
Low literacy levels and high school dropouts
Limited access to quality education and healthcare
Poor sanitation and unsafe drinking water
Lack of livelihood opportunities and social mobility

A Focused Initiative – Starting April 2026
IFTR is launching a mission-driven project to support 500 Irula children across 10 villages in Tiruvallur District.

This is not just another educational program. It is a holistic development movement, built on a focused, practical, and community-centric approach.

What Will This Initiative Deliver?
- Supplementary Education
Foundational literacy and numeracy
Bridge learning to reduce school dropouts, individual mentoring and academic handholding
- Skill Development & Exposure
Practical learning in science, technology, and innovation, hands-on workshops to build curiosity and confidence, digital awareness and future-ready skills

- Life Skills, Values & Cultural Strengthening, personality development and positive attitude building, reconnecting children with their cultural identity, encouraging dignity, self-worth, and aspiration
- Health, Hygiene & Sanitation
Awareness on clean water, sanitation, and hygiene practices, basic health camps and nutritional guidance, preventive healthcare education
- Livelihood Orientation
Exposure to sustainable livelihood opportunities, skill-based training for long-term empowerment of families.

Why This Matters?

India’s development story cannot be complete unless communities like the Irulas are brought into the mainstream with dignity and opportunity.

For PVTGs, the gap is not just economics alone. It is educational, social, and aspirational. Focused interventions during childhood can transform the trajectory of entire communities.
This initiative aims to:
+ Break the cycle of poverty
+ Reduce educational inequality
+ Build confident, skilled, and self-reliant youth
+ Create a replicable model for tribal empowerment.

A Collective Responsibility
This is more than a project. It is a shared mission.
We invite:
• Individuals
• Corporates (CSR initiatives)
• Educators and volunteers
• Social organizations
to come forward and partner, support, and participate in this transformative journey.

Together, we can ensure that 500 children are not left behind, but are instead prepared to lead, learn, and thrive.

Let’s Build the Future – One Child, One Village at a Time.

Real change begins when intent meets action. April 2026 is just the beginning.

This year International Women's Day theme "Give to Gain" signifies the need for giving to get the best from Women - be it agriculture or other related areas including value addition.
Given the opportunity women can do things better in all spheres of life due to the focus on core areas right from farming essentials to aggregation, leadership, value addition, post harvest processing, marketing and handling finance. However, there are constraints that acts as hurdle in making this chain run continuously.
Indigenous and Frontier Technology Research Centre (IFTR) considers this as a platform to bring them together and help in various ways including equitable participation and rebuild the agri ecosystem that is searching for newer generation to handhold for prosperity.
Dr. Sundaram Seshadri echoes the organisational value, talking about empowering women as a key to unlock the potential of women who are the knowledge keepers and the memory chains of the families with wisdom. Added to this innovation and economics can change the way the activities are taken up and the ladder extends beyond imagination.
This year's theme for International Women's Day, "Give to Gain," emphasizes the importance of giving in order to harness the full potential of women in various fields, including agriculture and related areas such as value addition.

When provided with opportunities, women can excel in all aspects of life, focusing on essential areas like farming, aggregation, leadership, value addition, post-harvest processing, marketing, and financial management. However, certain constraints hinder the smooth operation of this chain.

"Invest in a Child’s Beginning. Shape a Community’s Future"

In the remote tribal region of the Jawadhu Hills, 220 children studying in Classes 1 and 2 are beginning their formal education, often with limited access to basic learning resources.

Through the Sleeping Children Around the World (SCAW) programme, Rotary District 3234, led by the Rotary Club of Ambattur, in partnership with Rotary Canada, is addressing this gap by providing essential learning and school-readiness kits to children at the most critical stage of their development.

This initiative is being implemented in the Jawadhu Hills for the first time,l by Indigenous and Frontier Technology Research Centre (IFTR) creating a lasting foundation for early learning, school retention, and self-confidence.

Each kit is designed to be used for multiple academic years, ensuring sustained impact rather than one-time relief.

Every contribution translates into tangible outcomes, improved school attendance, enhanced learning readiness, and dignity for tribal children taking their first steps in education.

Inviting all those like minded organizations and individuals to support this cause. Why This Matters for all including CSR Partners
✔ Early childhood education with long-term social returns
✔ Direct beneficiary linkage and transparent implementation
✔ Alignment with CSR priorities: education, tribal welfare, inclusive growth
✔ Opportunity for employee engagement and impact reporting.

Join Us in Creating a Lasting Impact.

We invite corporates, institutions, and individuals to partner with us in expanding this initiative and reaching more tribal children across the region.

Your support today will help shape confident learners and stronger communities tomorrow.

A small investment now can change the trajectory of a child’s life.
🙏 Partner with Indigenous and Frontier Technology Research Centre (IFTR) and Rotary. Invest where it matters most, at the very beginning.

Over the past 10 months, Indigenous and Frontier Technology Research Centre (IFTR) has had the privilege of working closely with JP Morgan on a journey that has been as insightful impactful.
What began as an exploration of how technology can meaningfully support grassroots development evolved into a collaboration that helped us rethink how communities can be empowered through data, digital tools, and innovative approaches.
The highlight of this program was witnessing how a global institution like JP Morgan combines technical excellence with a genuine commitment to social good through the wonderful journey crossing various phases - Tech for Social Good, Code For Good graduating to Force For Good that cultimated into developing a wonderful digital product in hand. While the Code For Good teams won the hearts of the organization and us, the Force For Good team encouraged us to think deeply for them to design better, and build a solution that is not just technologically strong but also human-centric and accessible.
Through this partnership, we were able to develop a comprehensive digital solution for field-level data collection and cubical data analysis. This capability is already reshaping how we understand the challenges and opportunities faced by farmers, rural households, villages, educational institutions, women, and youth.
It helps us identify gaps with precision and design interventions that truly matter.
But this story doesn’t end here.
We are now enhancing these solutions to support real-time communication with beneficiaries, ensuring they receive timely information to make informed decisions. From farming practices to livelihood choices, from institutional planning to youth engagement, technology is becoming a bridge that connects aspirations with opportunities.
At IFTR, our belief is simple:
Giving back is not an obligation; it is an ongoing commitment to uplift the communities that nurture us.
This collaboration has strengthened that commitment and reaffirmed our purpose to take affordable, appropriate, and people-oriented technologies to rural and tribal regions across India.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to JP Morgan Chase for their partnership, guidance, handholding and unwavering support patiently developing such a wonderful product through these months.

A proud milestone in IFTR’s journey to empower rural and tribal communities through affordable, human-focused interventions. This marks not just a technological achievement but a meaningful step forward in how IFTR will continue to serve communities in the years ahead.
