Don Bosco: A Saint of Optimism and Joy
Don Bosco was truly a saint of optimism and joy. His guiding maxim was simple yet profound: “Let us serve the Lord with holy joy.” He firmly believed that cheerfulness was not superficial happiness but a deep spiritual strength.
Even in his early adolescent years, Don Bosco radiated joy. As a young boy, he formed a group known as the Society of Merry Makers (Società dell’Allegria), convinced that holiness and happiness walk hand in hand. With his simple talents—magic tricks, sports, acrobatics, and storytelling—he brought smiles to everyone around him. He was convinced that when people are genuinely happy, the devil finds no place among them.
Don Bosco often told young people, “My only desire is to see you happy here on earth and happy in eternity.” For him, joy was a sign of God’s presence. Where there is joy, there is life; where there is cheerfulness, hope is reborn; where hearts are light, faith and love flourish.
Don Bosco lived what he preached. His smile was his sermon, his joy his evangelization. He remains for us today a smiling saint, reminding us that holiness is not gloomy but radiant, not burdensome but joyful—a holiness that attracts, uplifts, and gives life.
