“Ashura: When Should I Fast?”
The Prophet ﷺ planned to fast an EXTRA day for Ashura — and never got the chance. 💔
He ﷺ said: “If I live to see the next year, if Allah wills, we will fast on the 9th day too (alongside the 10th Muharram).” He passed away before that year came. (Muslim)
He ﷺ also told us: “Fast the Day of Ashura and be different — fast a day before it or a day after it.” (Ahmad, Ibn Khuzaymah)

“Beware of Unfounded Practices” (Ashura Innovations)
Not everything done in the name of religion... IS religion. ⚠️
Allah says: “Or have they partners who have legislated for them in religion that which Allah has not permitted?” (Surah Ash-Shūrā 42:21)
The Prophet ﷺ warned us directly — wailing, self-harm, and “the ways of ignorance” have NO place in Islam. Yet every Ashura, the same unfounded practices resurface:
❌ Mourning rituals & self-harm

❌ Treating it as a festival/celebration

❌ Special foods “required” with no proof

❌ Acts never done by the Prophet ﷺ or his companions
Imam Mālik رحمه الله said it best: whoever introduces an innovation and calls it good has implied the Prophet’s message was incomplete.
If it’s not proven — leave it. That’s the safest path. 🕊️

“Two Small Fasts. Massive Rewards.”
The math on this is actually insane. 🧮✨
3 fasting days × following the Sunnah = forgiveness of a full year’s minor sins + the multiplied reward of good deeds (Qur’an 6:160 — ten times the reward of every good deed).
Three ways to fast Ashura:

🥇 Most complete — 9th, 10th & 11th

🥈 Recommended — 9th+10th or 10th+11th

🥉 Permissible — 10th only (if you have a valid excuse)
Why fast an extra day? To be different from the People of the Book, who fasted only the 10th.
This isn’t just “a fast.” It’s one of the most rewarding moments of your entire year.
اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنَا مِنَ الشَّاكِرِينَ الذَّاكِرِينَ

“O Allah, make us among those who are grateful, who remember You often, and whose deeds are accepted.” Ameen 🤲

“Things Muslims Do in Muharram But Shouldn’t”
Muharram just started... and so did the confusion. 😬
Every year, well-meaning Muslims slip into habits that have ZERO basis in the Sunnah — treating it like Eid, sharing unverified “miracle” stories, or skipping the one fast that’s actually recommended (Ashura) while drowning in sins instead of seeking forgiveness.
Muharram isn’t about traditions passed down from generation to generation. It’s about following what the Prophet ﷺ actually taught.
✅ Fast Ashura

✅ Make sincere dua

✅ Increase dhikr & istighfar

✅ Repent

✅ Give charity

“Fasting on the Day of Ashura”
Why did the Prophet ﷺ fast THIS day specifically? 🤔
Ibn Abbas (RA) explains: when the Prophet ﷺ arrived in Madinah, he found the Jews fasting on Ashura because it was the day Allah saved Musa (AS) and drowned Fir’awn. The Prophet ﷺ said: “I am closer to Musa than they are,” then fasted it himself and ordered the Muslims to do the same. (Sahih Al-Bukhari)
Ibn Abbas (RA) also said he never saw the Prophet ﷺ more eager to fast any day except Ashura, or any month except Ramadan.
And the reward? When asked about it, the Prophet ﷺ said he hopes Allah will expiate the sins of the past year. (Sahih Muslim)
One day. A year’s worth of sins. Don’t sleep on this. 🌙
