Tamil Heritage Trust (Reg. No. 379/2010) is set up to promote, document and disseminate Indian heritage. Our regular activities towards creation of awareness about our heritage are
1. Monthly Lectures on various aspects of heritage on first Saturday
2. Annual Site Seminars to Heritage sites once every year. (Mallai, Gujarat, Nellai, Srirangam, Badami so far and Orissa in 2017)
3. Pechchu Kachchery during Music season on various Art subjects. (Sangam heritage, Indian Paintings, Srirangam, Dr. Nagaswamy and Mamallai in 2016)
4. Regular Presentations at interested Schools to sensitize youngsters to our heritage.
5. Co-ordination with Govt Culture and Tourism agencies for supplementing their efforts

In addition, A coffee-table book on Mamallapuram written by Prof. Swaminathan and illustrated with photographs taken by Ashok Krishnaswamy has been published in English and Tamil. A similar book on Pudukkottai is currently under preparation. We wish to work with other organizations and enthusiasts interested in preserving and studying heritage and culture.

Chitrakaavyam literally means “verses that evoke wonder”. Among the wonderfully diverse forms of Sanskrit poetry, Chitrakaavyam is that which has ingenious use of letters and syllables, in patterns and arrangements meant to amaze and delight the reader.

In her talk, Chitrakaavyam: Poetry Designed to Dazzle, Sanskrit teacher and translator, Rajani Arjun Shankar will explore Sanskrit verses that showcase this kind of poetry.

The talk will also explore some examples from Tamil poetry

It is with profound sorrow that the Tamil Heritage Trust announces the postponement of the V Venkayya Epigraphy Award 2026 function, scheduled for 29 August 2026, following the passing of the awardee, Dr C. Somasundara Rao, on 18 August 2026. The function will take place on a future date, and the award and citation will be presented to his family.

Dr Rao was a distinguished historian and epigraphist who devoted his life to the study and preservation of Andhra history, epigraphy, palaeography and numismatics. Through his pioneering research, landmark publications, editing of inscriptions, teaching and guidance of younger scholars, he made an enduring contribution to the understanding of South India's inscriptional heritage.

His Inscriptions of Andhra Pradesh, Studies in Andhra History and Culture and his edition of South Indian Inscriptions, Volume XLII stand as lasting monuments to his scholarship. His work also brought epigraphy closer to students and the wider public.

The Tamil Heritage Trust mourns the loss of an eminent scholar and doyen of the epigraphical community. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, students and admirers.

We shall remember Dr C. Somasundara Rao with admiration and deep respect.

Tamil Heritage Trust and the family of Shri. V. Venkayya are delighted to announced that Dr C Somasundara Rao, distinguished historian and epigraphist, will receive the V Venkayya Epigraphy Award 2026.

The award ceremony will be held at 6:00 p.m. on 29-Aug in Chennai. Dr. Somasundara Rao will deliver his award lecture titled 'Dating Methods in the Inscriptions of Andhra Pradesh : A Review'

Inviting Nominations for the V Venkayya Epigraphy Award 2026

The Award was instituted in 2022 in the memory of Shri V Venkayya, a pioneering epigrapher who became the first Indian Chief Epigraphist to the Government of India, by his great-granddaughter, Smt. Sunitha Madhavan

The Award seeks to honour outstanding individual contributions in the discovery of unrecorded inscriptions, the interpretation of inscriptions from new perspectives, the dissemination of their knowledge through traditional and digital media, and the preservation of epigraphic resources for posterity.

Past winners of the Award are Dr Y Subbarayalu (2022), Dr P V Krishnamurthy (2023), Dr V Vedachalam (2024) and Dr Shrinivas V Padigar (2025).
