Vidya Sagar CSO Vidya Sagar, Chennai, advocates for the inclusion of individuals with multiple disabilities. Vidya Sagar. Is a movement. A flight for freedom.

A statement of faith. Started in a garage in 1985 by Ms Poonam Natarajan, a mother with a child with disability, Ishu, Vidya Sagar is known today for the quality and range of programs. Itโ€™s โ€œprofessionalism with careโ€, the pro-active and positive spirit of its team of staff and children. In over 4 decades, Vidya Sagar has developed into an institution offering programs that focus on holistic development and education for children and adults with special needs; demystification of disability; empowering persons with special needs and their families with knowledge and skills, while strongly advocating on issues of inclusion. The organization believes in the right to equality of opportunity, an inclusive society where differences are celebrated, that disability is a development and a human rights issue.

The Disability Legislation Unit (DLU), Vidya Sagar, conducted an awareness programme on โ€œ๐ƒ๐ข๐ฌ๐š๐›๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ๐ฉ๐ž๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž ๐š๐ง๐ ๐‹๐ž๐ ๐š๐ฅ ๐…๐ซ๐š๐ฆ๐ž๐ฐ๐จ๐ซ๐คโ€ at ๐ƒ๐ซ. ๐€๐ฆ๐›๐ž๐๐ค๐š๐ซ ๐‹๐š๐ฐ ๐‚๐จ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ž๐ ๐ž, Tharamani, with the participation of approximately 250 students and 4 faculty members.

The session brought together perspectives on disability, law, history and lived experiences. *๐Œ๐ฌ. ๐”๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฅ ๐Š๐ก๐š๐ข๐ซ presented on disability perspective and the legal framework, ๐Œ๐ซ. ๐’๐ฎ๐ฆ๐š๐ง ๐†๐š๐ฒ๐ž๐ง shared practical experiences with assistive devices, ๐Œ๐ฌ. ๐๐ซ๐š๐ฏ๐ž๐ž๐ง๐š explored the evolution of disability history, and ๐Œ๐ฌ. ๐๐š๐ญ๐š๐ฅ๐ฒ facilitated an engaging activity session, with ๐Œ๐ฌ. ๐’๐ก๐จ๐›๐š๐ง๐š providing support throughout the programme.

This programme provided an opportunity for students to understand disability from a rights-based and inclusive perspective and to engage with practical experiences and activities.

We were encouraged by the Collegeโ€™s commitment to creating an inclusive and barrier-free learning environment, including accessible infrastructure, an Equal Opportunity Cell under the ๐‘๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ๐ฌ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ๐จ๐ง๐ฌ ๐ฐ๐ข๐ญ๐ก ๐ƒ๐ข๐ฌ๐š๐›๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐ž๐ฌ ๐€๐œ๐ญ, ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ” , and a Free Legal Aid Cell.

The DLU team also proposed collaboration with the Collegeโ€™s Free Legal Aid Cell to strengthen awareness and support for disability rights. The College expressed its interest in continued engagement with DLU, including future workshops, training programmes for students with visual impairment, and lecture series.

The first Sibling Workshop for the academic year 2026โ€“2027, themed "Together and Beyond," was conducted for siblings of Vidya Sagar students aged 18 years and above. Twenty-two of our faculty members had the opportunity to attend a four-week leadership workshop facilitated by Shankaran Nair , Parameshwaran and Irshad Syed from Slingshot. The workshop encouraged participants to introspect on the individual qualities that make an effective learning leader. The sessions were thoughtfully planned and enriching, leaving participants with meaningful food for thought at the end of each session.

These insights will serve as the foundation for our continued journey of learning and leadership.

We are thrilled to share that the Guru Krupa Foundation has once again extended its generous support to Vidya Sagar. Since 2021, Guru Krupa foundation has been a steadfast partner in our mission to skill development and entrepreneurship training of individuals with disabilities. The foundationโ€™s support has been instrumental to provide vocational skills with individualised support and eventually move towards supported entrepreneurship. In addition to group of entrepreneurs in weaving and sustainable packaging, two other Entrepreneurial groups (Thread painting and Paper bag) have started functioning in the month of June, paving towards self employment and economic independence.

This year, the foundationโ€™s support will empower adults with developmental disabilities to gain vocational skills in the areas of weaving; environmental skilling; handmade paper; appropriate paper technology; tie and dye; block printing; sublimation and arts and crafts.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Guru Krupa Foundation for the unwavering support, enabling us to make a meaningful impact on the lives of adults with multiple disabilities. Thank you for being a vital part of our journey!
