Lake bunds in Chengalpattu district harbours rare native vegetation that are beneficial to both the local people and various life forms. Apart from direct benefits these native trees performs a variety of ecosystem function that makes these landscape resilient and helps to maintain the ecosystem health.

Therefore these vegetation along the lake bunds needs to be considered as biodiversity rich zones and needs to be protected from human disturbances.

Through Eco Society India we are conserving these forest vegetation along the lake bunds in and around the Chennai region by collecting the seeds of these forest trees and raising it in our nursery and planting it along the lake bunds.

Help us to conserve the ecosystems and make our ecosystems reselient.

Tropical Dry Evergreen Forest (TDEF) ecosystems were once found throughout the South eastern coast of India. The trees present in these forests forms a dense canopy and greatly reducing the sunlight reaching the ground, providing a cool microclimate year round since the trees are evergreen with thick shiny leathery green leaves.

The species composition of these TDEF coastal Forest played an important role in sustaining various fauna like birds, monitor lizards, pangolins, reptiles, porcupines, civet cats, macaques, deer's, foxes, jackals and leopards since they are very high in primary productivity with continuous flowering and fruiting one after the other and certain species exhibiting aseasonal flowering and fruiting. Therefore TDEFs are considered as biodiversity rich zones along the eastern coasts of India.

It is really fascinating to note that such TDEFs are still found in certain pockets near Chennai but facing varying degrees of disturbances and degradation. Through Eco Society India we are conserving the TDEF's in and around the Chennai region.

Join us for conserving this rare forest type and help us conserve the biodiversity of the region.

Myself along with my Professor Dr. N. Parthasarathy on a visit to sacred groves of Chennai yesterday.

Sacred groves are relics of old world forests preserved until today by the local communities through belief systems.

It was aw inspiring to note that such lush green forest with tall Canopy trees were once found throughout the eastern coast of South India.

The peculiar feature of evergreen vegetation is it occurs as climax community and the seedlings of these evergreen forest can only grow as a community under certain microclimatic conditions.

Due to large scale landuse change for over several hundred years along the eastern coasts, these forest have slowly disintegrated and are under the brink of extinction now.

Help us save such forest. Join us!
