Had a meaningful interaction on 13th of March at Pondicherry University, where our Founder/Director was invited to join a panel discussion on Mental Health and Disability.

It was heartening to engage with students, faculty, and fellow panelists on the importance of building more compassionate, inclusive systems of care. Also it is very encouraging to see the expansion of knowledge in this field and the increasing youth leadership taking the lead in this sector.

Grateful for the opportunity to share reflections from our journey in community mental health work through Better Chances, and to connect with thoughtful people working toward similar goals.

Looking forward to more such dialogues that bring together academia, lived experience, and grassroots practice.


Having said all that what stuck to us and continues to linger on to this minute in every possible way is the fact that Pondicheri University is a sprawling 800 acres of beautifully tended land with the most beautiful canopy of trees and plants and greenery all aroundā€¦! Treasure! We were happy to be amidst all those greenery and also being lost for while there - happily of course! šŸ¤Ŗ

Our Peer T invites a gentleman from our local neighbourhood for our Christmas Party. T has been doing his favourite occupation of selling Onions in the neighbourhood. A business that we facilitated for him after understanding his needs. And this Gentleman Sivanandham has been a regular customer who buys onions from T. And they have built a strong friendship over this business. Inclusion as we see it is not a one way street. There are layers to it.

What stood out was not just enterprise, but relationship.

This moment reminded us that inclusion is not medical, technical, or procedural. Inclusion is heartful. It happens when people meet beyond labels, when trust replaces hesitation, and when everyday interactions become bonds.
True inclusion flows both ways.
It is not only the community accepting a person with lived experience of mental health challenges ā€”
it is also that person welcoming the community into their world, as equals, as friends, as part of their shared story of well-being.

Our office inside this beautiful community is buzzing with Christmassy vibes! Our neighbours have, as usual, all assembled in our festive ritual of making Sweets and Savouries along with our peers! Itā€™s an all inclusive festive vibrant Christmassy Christmas with the most yummiest treats - Home and Hope Made!! šŸ’šŸ«¶šŸ½šŸ„°šŸ˜

Why should every human experience be ā€œlabledā€ and addressed like itā€™s an oddity?? Blame it on some people also for this situation- where they feel ā€œcompleteā€ after fitting into a ā€œlabelā€ - probably with a sense or a feeling of having gotten to know themselves better. A sense of control and predictability perhaps??

On December 3, 2025ā€”International Day of Persons with Disabilitiesā€”Better Chances NGO showcases its transformative work in fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress, the UNā€™s theme for this year.

This video highlights the work of Porkodi and Better Chances in Chennaiā€™s Villivakkam/Kolathur Urban neighborhoods, where individuals with psycho-social disabilities live independently through community-integrated housing, art therapy, and peer support.
