A Game for Peace

In a popular grouping game, students who could not form a group were usually eliminated, leaving them disappointed. We changed the rule: instead of eliminating anyone, students could stand (1), kneel (½), or squat (¼) to make the required number. This simple Gandhian innovation ensured that everyone remained in the game, experienced inclusion, and enjoyed learning mathematics through counting and fractions. The game became a joyful lesson in peace, creativity, and togetherness.

Gandhi Peace
Foundation Conducted Peace Education Session at Saai Balamandhir Nursery & Primary School, Sivagangai
Date: 16 July 2026
Duration: 1 Hour (2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.)
Venue: Saai Balamandhir Nursery & Primary School, Sivagangai
Participants: 25 Students
Resource Persons: Dr. S. Kulandaisamy & Ms. Indhumathi
The Gandhi Peace Foundation, Madras conducted a one-hour Peace Education Session for 25 students at Saai Balamandhir Nursery & Primary School, Sivagangai.
The session was arranged through the kind initiative of Mr. Anantharaman (Retd. IOB Manager), whose support made this programme possible.
The session began with an interactive discussion on peace at home. Students shared how peace can be practised with parents and siblings through love, respect, patience, and understanding. The discussion then extended to peace in the classroom, where students reflected on how their behaviour influences a positive learning environment. The children actively participated throughout the session, eagerly sharing their ideas and experiences.
Ms. Indhumathi introduced the Six Peace Rules through practical examples and student interaction. The discussion focused on how these simple practices can help students avoid gossiping, accept situations they cannot change without blaming others or nature, accept their mistakes with humility, and apologise sincerely when they are wrong. Students related these ideas to their own daily experiences, making the learning meaningful and practical.
Dr. S. Kulandaisamy narrated the true story behind Mahatma Gandhi's simple clothing, explaining why Gandhi chose to dress in the same simple manner as millions of poor people in India. He emphasised that Gandhi believed a leader should live like the people he serves and practise the values he teaches. This real-life story helped students understand the importance of empathy, simplicity, and leading by example.
The session encouraged students to express themselves freely, ask questions, and learn from one another in a joyful and interactive environment. By connecting Gandhian values with everyday situations at home and school, the programme inspired students to develop self-awareness and practise peaceful living in their daily lives.
The programme concluded with the distribution of the "Gandhian Lifestyle for a Peaceful World" poster to all students, encouraging them to continue reflecting on and practising these values with their families, friends, and teachers.

Peace Foundation Conducted the Fifth Peace Education Session at The Children's Garden School
Date: 23 July 2026
Duration: 2 Hours (10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon)
Venue: The Children's Garden School
Participants: 35 Students (Grades IV & V)
Resource Persons: Dr. S. Kulandaisamy & Ms. Indhumathi
The Gandhi Peace Foundation, Madras conducted its fifth Peace Education Session for the Grade IV and V students of The Children's Garden School. The two-hour session focused on strengthening students' understanding of peaceful behaviour through interactive discussions, practical activities, and inclusive games.
The programme began with a recap of the Six Peace Rules introduced in the earlier sessions. Students enthusiastically recalled the rules, particularly Listen Absolutely, Get Permission to Talk, and Do Not Complain, and demonstrated how they had been practising these principles in their classrooms and at home. Their active participation reflected the positive impact of the previous sessions.
Ms. Indhumathi guided the students through discussions on applying the Peace Rules in everyday situations. The students eagerly shared their own experiences, making the session highly interactive and learner-centred.
Dr. S. Kulandaisamy conducted an engaging cooperation and concentration activity in which students stood in a circle while balancing a piece of chalk on their index fingers and moving together. After the activity, students reflected on the challenges they encountered and identified the qualities needed to succeed. They concluded that cooperation, concentration, patience, mutual support, and recognising the goodness in others are essential for achieving a common goal.
Another interactive group game encouraged students to form circles based on a given number. During the reflection, students observed that some participants were left out whenever groups were formed. This led to a meaningful discussion on inclusion, empathy, and the emotional impact of exclusion.
Foundation Conducted Peace Education Session at D.S. Karthikeya Raja Nursery & Primary School, Sivagangai
Date: 16 July 2026
Duration: 2 Hours (10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon)
Venue: D.S. Karthikeya Raja Nursery & Primary School, Sivagangai
Participants: 85 Students
Resource Persons: Dr. S. Kulandaisamy & Ms. Indhumathi
The Gandhi Peace Foundation, Madras conducted a two-hour Peace Education Session for 85 students at D.S. Karthikeya Raja Nursery & Primary School, Sivagangai as part of its ongoing mission to promote peace education based on Gandhian values.
The session was arranged through the kind initiative of Mr. Anantharaman (Retd. IOB Manager), whose support made this programme possible.
The session commenced with an interactive conversation on "What is Happiness?" Students eagerly shared their thoughts and experiences, and the discussion gradually progressed to "What is Peace?" Through this activity, students realised that peace begins within each individual and is reflected in our thoughts, words, and actions.
Ms. Indhumathi introduced the Six Peace Rules through examples and interactive participation. Rather than simply listening, students practised the rules throughout the session by listening attentively, raising their hands before speaking, waiting patiently for their turn, and respecting one another's opinions. This experiential approach helped students understand how peaceful behaviour can be practised in everyday life.
Dr. S. Kulandaisamy narrated the "Copiyan" story, encouraging students to think independently and recognise that copying limits creativity and original thinking. He also shared simple practices that promote self-awareness and discipline, including maintaining proper posture while sitting. By sitting on the floor along with the students, he created a friendly and inclusive learning atmosphere where every child felt comfortable participating.
During the session, Dr. Kulandaisamy highlighted Mahatma Gandhi's principle that teachers should practise what they teach, inspiring students to understand that actions are more powerful than words.
A unique feature of the programme was the "Gandhian Lifestyle for a Peaceful World" poster activity. Students worked in groups and confidently explained important Gandhian concepts such as Be the Change, One Step is Enough, Truth and Non-violence, and Dignity of Labour. The activity transformed the students into teachers, encouraging peer learning, confidence, and active participation.
At the conclusion of the session, each student received the "Gandhian Lifestyle for a Peaceful World" poster to continue reflecting on and practising Gandhian values in their daily lives.
The session inspired students to cultivate self-awareness, peaceful habits, and personal responsibility, reinforcing the belief that lasting peace begins with every individual.
