Damien Foundation India Trust is a charitable organisation working for the cause of leprosy and TB since 1955.

We are a charitable non-governmental organization working in the areas of Leprosy and TB control activities in India, supported by Damien Foundation Belgium. We offer Leprosy and TB related services either through our own projects or through collaboration with other NGOs. We are also involved in strengthening Leprosy and TB control programs of the Government through support activities like capacity building. Our organization started its chapter of Leprosy control activities in a village in South India in 1955 and TB control in 1996. Today our interventions cover a population of 112,159,849 in eight states.

We are grateful to Otto Per Mille Grant for extending its support to Damien Foundation India Trust in 2026 towards our Project Model Leprosy Unit Hospital, Dehri-on-Sone, Rohtas District, Bihar.

Under the project “Specialised Healthcare and Rehabilitation Services for Persons Affected by Leprosy,” the hospital continues to provide medical care, rehabilitation and support to people affected by leprosy.

This project provide support for persons affected by leprosy through its hospital services like out-patient care, deformity corrective surgery, skin treatment, diagnosis of new leprosy cases, in-patient management, Lepra reaction management, ulcer management, septic surgeries, and provision of footwear for ulcer patients.

Together, we continue working towards accessible healthcare, rehabilitation and dignity for persons affected by leprosy.

20th September 2013, we remember with gratitude and deep respect **Dr. Claire Marie Jeanne Vellut** — Padma Shri recipient (1981), Stree Ratna Awardee (1997), and founder of the **Damien Foundation India Trust**.

For over 55 years in India, Dr. Claire dedicated her life to serving persons affected by leprosy and TB. At Polambakkam, she pioneered the **“Treatment on Doorsteps”** approach, bringing healthcare closer to rural communities through mobile medical services, reconstructive surgery, rehabilitation, and TB care.

A true visionary and humanitarian, her life was a testament to **compassion, dignity, service, and humanity**. Her remarkable legacy continues to inspire generations and lives on through the work of the Damien Foundation India Trust.

The Prime Minister of India , Mr. Narendra Modi, hosted lunch on 3rd September for the visiting Prime Minister of Belgium. The Belgian embassy on behalf of its prime minister invited about 7 including four from India to accompany him. Dr Krishnamurthy, Chairman Damien Foundation India Trust was one of them. At Hyderabad house he was introduced to both the prime ministers, had photos taken with them and partook lunch.

We are pleased to share the **Dainik Bhaskar** coverage of the successful **Reconstructive Surgery (RCS) Camp** conducted at the Damien Foundation Leprosy Control Centre in Bihar.

📅 Camp: 22–24 August 2026
🏥 20 patients successfully underwent reconstructive surgery
👩 7 women | 13 men
❤️ 303 reconstructive surgeries facilitated since 2022

Patients from different districts of Bihar received essential surgical and rehabilitation support to help restore function and improve their quality of life.

Leprosy is curable. Early diagnosis, timely treatment and rehabilitation can prevent disability and restore dignity.

Damien Foundation RCS Camp Featured in Media Darshan

We are delighted to share that the Damien Foundation Reconstructive Surgery (RCS) Camp has been featured in Media Darshan Newspaper.

During the camp, 17 persons affected by leprosy successfully underwent reconstructive surgeries, helping them regain function, independence, and confidence.

This achievement reflects our continued commitment to restoring dignity and improving the quality of life of people affected by leprosy. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated surgeons, medical professionals, staff members, and supporters who made this camp a success.

Together, we continue to bring hope, healing, and a brighter future to those in need.

On the occasion of World TB Day (24th March), meaningful awareness activities were conducted at the Damien Foundation Leprosy and TB Hospital, Nellore. Patients, along with students from Narayana Nursing College and the dedicated staff of Damien Foundation India Trust (DFIT), came together to spread awareness about tuberculosis, its prevention, and the importance of early diagnosis and treatment.

Adding to the impact, the DFIT team actively participated in the World TB Rally organized by the District TB Centre, Nellore, reinforcing our collective commitment to a TB-free future.

Together, we stand united in the fight against TB — raising awareness, reducing stigma, and promoting healthier communities.

The World TB Day 2026 theme is “Yes! We can end TB: Led by countries, powered by people”.

World Leprosy Day 2026 - “Leprosy is curable, the real challenge is stigma.”

Leprosy stigma is consistently raised by persons affected by leprosy as one of their most significant challenges.
• Stigma affects daily lives:
• Stigma causes people to lose their jobs
• Stigma means people are forced to leave their homes
• Stigma is the reason people are turned away from family and community life
• Stigma keeps children from attending school

Leprosy can be treated completely with early diagnosis.
But fear, myths, and discrimination continue to affect lives.
