As a part of our social initiative of empowering women, our very first project is MEE - Mothers Empowered and Energized. The Purpose
“With generations changing every seven years communication gap is slowly pushing the parent-child relationship in majority indian households towards an impasse.” - Akash Gowtham ( career counsellor and motivational speaker). Several other contributing factors like changes in education system, new Business/ job Opportunities, digitisation and innovative/alternative career path which has left most of the mothers challenged with maladaptive coping strategies and lack of secure bonding engagement. Thus, resulting in huge communication gap between the mothers and their children. According to Dr. Taruna Wadhwa - Clinical Psychologist “ One of the biggest causes for depression in children is the communication gap with parents”
Due to these barriers there is unhealthy bond between the mother and their children, hence there is lack of personal growth and emotional support for the child. Family being the first social institution for children, the lack of emotional support from the family leads to low self esteem, lack of confidence and insecurity. As a result the child has low resilience, leading to various disorders such as depression, anxiety, and unhealthy behaviours- smoking, alcohol consumption, substance abuse etc,. MEE builds and enhances resilience in children which is attained by mentoring the mothers to create a secure bond. Thereby, MEE aims on building resilience in every child. We have chosen mentoring mothers as the first step to bridge the communication gap with their children. Mothers have high level of stress due to external factors like family pressure, finance, work pressure, children’s future etc which can interfere with her upbringing or parenting style to connect with her children. Through mentoring process we help the mothers in reducing the stress and connect with children thus increasing the level of resilience in the children
The Process
We choose Female Psychology Graduates and screen them for high emotional stability using standardised tools and train them for a period of time for the mentoring process. Then the mothers of adolescent children will be assessed for their stress level before the process and assigned with a mentor each. The mentoring process will take place for 3 months over phone where the mentors help the mothers reduce their stress, build their self esteem and confidence making them to connect and create a secure relationship with their children. At the end of the 3 months process the Resilience improvement in the children will be measured using standardised tools.
