A Thousand Crossroads, our new exhibition opening 6th August 2026 at Kadambari Gallery, brings together artefacts from our own collections that speak to a creative tradition born of confluence—contact by sea and by land. Monsoon winds carried artisans, merchants, and pilgrims across the Indian Ocean, binding South India to East Africa, Arabia, and Southeast Asia. Mountain passes drew Islamic courts, craftsmen, and ideas overland into the peninsula's interior, and, in time, European traders: Portuguese, Dutch, and others added their own currents to this confluence.
The exhibition moves beyond conventional classifications of region and dynasty to reveal craft as a continuous, evolving workshop of exchange and adaptation, becoming indistinguishable from the vernacular itself. What we inherit as "tradition" is, in truth, the residue of centuries of cosmopolitan encounter. Join us as we reimagine South Indian material culture through the lens of mobility.
