𝗣𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗶𝗿 🌱  After the Low Emission Zone (L*Z) Steering Committee was formally created in June 2026, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) held its first Steering Committee meeting in July. Representatives from PMC, Regional Transport Office (RTO), ITDP India, and WRI India came together to decide the way forward for the city’s first L*Z pilot!    𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱?  The meeting focussed on the immediate next steps for implementation of L*Z in Pune, including: 📟 Establishing air quality baseline through installation of hyperlocal air quality sensors  🚗 Understanding vehicular inventory for Shivajinagar Area  📍Identifying locations for air quality sensors near schools and hospitals, and integrating them into the current Clean Air Portal  📹 Exploring technology for the identification of violating vehicles    With various stakeholders bringing in different perspectives on clean air, the meeting marked an important milestone in moving L*Z from planning to implementation. ITDP India looks forward to working with the Pune Municipal Corporation and partners across Pune to make India’s first L*Z pilot a reality!

🍃Is Chennai’s air as clean as once perceived? Chennai is often thought of as a city with cleaner air than most others, because of its proximity to the coast. But it’s worth taking a closer look at the facts.

Recent air quality records show Chennai nearing 200 on the AQI scale, entering the unhealthy range. And air quality can look very different across neighbourhoods. What you see in Parrys may not be the same as what’s recorded in Anna Nagar.

⁉️But why does this variation happen? More importantly, what can we do about it?

✨As part of a C40 Cities-led initiative, ITDP India studied the feasibility study of Clean Air Zones (CAZs, also known as Low Emission Zones) in Chennai and Madurai. The study in Chennai has identified that priority CAZ areas could come up in George Town, Pulianthope, Perambur, Purasawalkam, and Tiruvottiyur, due to the high pollution levels. Large CAZ area (city-wide) is preferred for greater impact.

𝗘𝗿𝗼𝗱𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘁𝘀 🌱

For decades, Erode’s streets have largely grown without safe footpaths, making it difficult and unsafe for people to walk. As the city continues to expand, there is an urgent need for a shared vision that brings together many city agencies on the same page, and clear guidelines on how future streets must be planned and managed. This is what the Erode City Municipal Corporation (ECMC) has set out to address.

In June, ECMC, with technical support from CEEW India and ITDP India, convened a stakeholder consultation to shape three key mobility policies and guidelines:
* The Complete Streets Policy,
* The Comprehensive Road and Street Design Guidelines,
* The Parking Policy and Parking Management Strategy and Action Plan.
Conducted under UK PACT, the session brought together 27 officials from 11 government departments to align on a shared vision for safer, more accessible, and climate-resilient streets.  
💭 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿?  When there are multiple government departments working on one street, the chances of different approaches contradicting each other are high. Hence, ECMC led the discussion to bring three policies and guidelines in motion, in order to streamline how Erode manages its mobility across departments.

➡️ 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁?  Follow-up sessions will be held with each of the participating departments and city agencies. The recommendations from these consultations will help refine the policies and guidelines before formal adoption.

What makes a bus rider’s experience great? 🚌

▪️More and better buses?
▪️More routes?
▪️Shorter wait times?
All are good answers, but they are only one part of the story.

A great rider experience comes from knowing when the bus will arrive, understanding service changes, finding information easily, and feeling heard when something goes wrong.

Good passenger communication matters, and it holds the key to strengthening our community of bus riders. 🔑

𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝗿𝗼𝗱𝗲, 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲.
🚌 Only 13.8% of the population has access to frequent buses. If you live in a slum, the odds are even worse - only 1.7% of slums have access to frequent public transport.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗯𝘂𝘀 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝗿𝗼𝗱𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲?
🚶🏻‍♂️To catch a bus, residents like Mani must often walk a kilometre on uneven roads. Even reaching a stop does not offer relief, as most of them lack shelters or seating. Finally got a bus? Next begins the tussle for a seat in a bus that is often over capacity. And if you miss the bus? Expect to wait another 20 minutes for the next one!

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀?
🚌 Ensuring all major roads in Erode - approximately 85 km – have access to public transport.
🚏 Redesigning all bus stops with shelters, wayfinding signages, route maps, timetables, and helplines/grievance numbers.

Remember Lakshmi’s unsafe walk to school from Episode 1 of this series?
Her story and Mani’s frustrating bus commute are two sides of the same coin. Without safe, continuous footpaths, even the best bus networks would remain out of reach. To build a safe and sustainable Erode, we need to improve its pedestrian and bus infrastructure.

Chennai’s Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC Chennai) is on a roll: Over 1,400 new buses in 18 months, a new AC bus fleet to beat the Chennai heat, the Magalir Vidiyal Payanam scheme, the swanky Ula heritage bus for tourists and Chennai-vaasis alike...and the list doesn’t end there! And because of these recent achievements, MTC’s ridership has risen by 1.7 lakh over a year! ⬆️

ITDP India looks forward to its collaboration with MTC to help improve public transport across Chennai.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗶𝗿𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗿-𝟮 𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆?  A one-kilometre walk to school in Erode is a daily obstacle course for students like Lakshmi. While nearly half of the city’s school students and staff walk to school, our latest study reveals that current street conditions are unfavourable for them.    𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝘂𝗻𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲?  ⚠️ Of 150 school children surveyed, every other child has been nearly hit by moving vehicles while walking on the road and footpaths.  ⚠️ More than half of girl students reported having had tripped and fallen while walking on the streets.  With only 10 schools in the city currently served by footpaths, many children are forced to dodge traffic and uneven road surfaces!    𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀?  🚸 Launching pilot programme for safe school streets around a 500m radius of schools,  🚦 Creating safe walking paths and crossings for all corporation schools.
🚶🏻‍♀️‍➡️ 21 km of redesigned footpaths equipped with kerb ramps, bollards and wayfinding signages.    𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀!  📝 These findings are part of our assessment of walking and cycling infrastructure in Erode, under the UK PACT Climate-Integrated Urban Mobility project. The study included audits of 21 km of footpaths, and perception surveys with 300 street users around 10 corporation schools.    Head to the link in our bio, or scan the QR code to know more about these studies.
