𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗶𝗿𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗿-𝟮 𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆?  A one-kilometre walk to school in Erode is a daily obstacle course for students like Lakshmi. While nearly half of the city’s school students and staff walk to school, our latest study reveals that current street conditions are unfavourable for them.    𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝘂𝗻𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲?  ⚠️ Of 150 school children surveyed, every other child has been nearly hit by moving vehicles while walking on the road and footpaths.  ⚠️ More than half of girl students reported having had tripped and fallen while walking on the streets.  With only 10 schools in the city currently served by footpaths, many children are forced to dodge traffic and uneven road surfaces!    𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀?  🚸 Launching pilot programme for safe school streets around a 500m radius of schools,  🚦 Creating safe walking paths and crossings for all corporation schools.
🚶🏻‍♀️‍➡️ 21 km of redesigned footpaths equipped with kerb ramps, bollards and wayfinding signages.    𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀!  📝 These findings are part of our assessment of walking and cycling infrastructure in Erode, under the UK PACT Climate-Integrated Urban Mobility project. For crores of women, the choice to use a bus is not just about the destination. The decision to ride starts with a simpler question: Do I feel safe? Do I feel comfortable? These everyday moments determine whether public transport is even an option. 🚌

The experience is shaped by the people who build the system. With only 1 woman driver for every 625 male drivers in India, the gender imbalance is clear. To build a system that’s inclusive, we need women at the table and behind the wheel. 🚶🏻‍♀️

There’s a budget maestro, a technical team whisperer, and a PowerPoint genius all right there 🎉

In short: a lot of work, and a lot of fun.
Behind it all, we’re 27 humans — more than our job titles. A biryani buff, a plant parent, a bird-call mimic, a pickleball pro.

Coimbatore recently took on a Tactical Urbanism project on an 200m stretch of VKK Menon road in heart of the city. This was taken up as part of the city’s larger plan to implement Safe Routes to School across several sites with schools.

In the phase 1 of the project, 10 sites across 20 streets will undergo the Tactical Urbanism intervention, which will help nudge behaviour change of road users and evaluate designs, before permanent upgrades are made.

The entire intervention is crucial given that 50% of students from corporation schools walk to school, and the phase 1 specifically targets these schools to showcase the potential and scope of safe routes to school projects. Once the Tactical Urbanism project gets implemented in Phase 1, overall 4kms across the city will be made safe benefitting 5000 students studying in the schools around.

In phase 2 of the project, the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation will take on permanent implementation of another 4km stretch along Trichy Road, and has also earmarked a budget of Rs.10 cr for the same in FY 2026-27 budget.

We are excited to be the knowledge partners on this project being spearheaded by the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation and strongly supported by the Traffic Police and would strive to see this project becoming synonymous to every school zone in the city!

As part of ITDP India’s engagement in Erode in collaboration with UK PACT (Partnering for Accelerated Climate Transitions) under the Climate-Integrated Urban Mobility project we began with deep-dive consultations with over seven departments between April and December 2025. These consultations helped to understand institutional roles, policy alignment, funding priorities, and the real gaps slowing down sustainable mobility.

These conversations strengthened a shared understanding of the current state of public transport and non-motorised transport.

In parallel, primary data collection with infrastructure audits at bus stops, footpaths, and schools along with user surveys, supported establish a strong mobility baseline.

❓𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝘄𝗼-𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵? The 𝗚𝗘𝗗𝗦𝗜 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘀! These guided how data was collected and interpreted, bringing attention to women and student commuters, pedestrian safety concerns, and the uneven impacts of mobility systems on access and opportunities.

Nagpurkars, are you ready for more pedestrian-friendly streets? 🎉   In February, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), with support from ITDP India and Prasanna Desai Architects (PDA), convened a meeting with elected corporators from Dharampeth and Shankarnagar. This meeting focussed on the upcoming phase of the Healthy Streets Programme in the city.    Chaired by Neeta Thakare, Mayor of Nagpur, and Dr. Abhijeet Chaudhari IAS, Former Municipal Commissioner, NMC, the session focussed on gathering feedback from citizen representatives. It also featured findings from the recently conducted city-wide surveys on streets impact assessment by ITDP India, and the proposed Healthy Street Design by Prasanna Desai Architects (Urban Design Consultant).
 What can citizens expect in the Nagpur Healthy Streets scale-up?  ✅ 13 km of healthy streets with accessible, pedestrian-friendly, and durable footpaths in Dharampeth and Shankarnagar!
 ITDP India is excited to provide technical support to NMC in creating safe, accessible streets for every neighbourhood in Nagpur!

𝗧𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗵𝘂𝗸𝘂𝗱𝗶 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁𝘀 𝗴𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗮 𝗽𝗲𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻-𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲-𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗜𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲! On March 3, 2026, ITDP India, in collaboration with Thoothukudi City Municipal Corporation (TCMC) organised a full-day, multi-stakeholder workshop on ‘People-Centric and Climate Resilient Urban Mobility in Thoothukudi’, under the UK PACT (Partnering for Accelerated Climate Transitions) programme. This workshop was conducted as a part of PACT Digi-PULSE Project for Thoothukudi, being led by IIT Madras in partnership with ITDP India, TERI, and CENEX, and focuses on climate-integrated urban planning and mobility.

Chaired by S. Priyanka IAS, Commissioner of TCMC, and P. Jegan, the Mayor of Thoothukudi, the workshop saw the participation of over 60 officials from various regional and state-level departments, such as the Engineering, Town Planning, and Health departments of TCMC, District Industries Centre (DIC), Tamil Nadu Green Climate Company (TNGCC), Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC), Highways Department, Traffic Police, Directorate of Town and Country Planning (DTCP), and more.

The workshop featured technical sessions on Sustainable Development Goals and urban mobility, planning for EV charging infrastructure in cities, and basics of bus infrastructure planning and street design. It also had two interesting activity sessions:
🧩 𝗔𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘁-𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲.
♿️ 𝗔 𝗚𝗘𝗗𝗦𝗜 (𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿, 𝗘𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻) 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗸.

Participants shared that the workshop helped them understand the core principles for designing healthy streets, building better public transport infrastructure, and planning for the city’s e-mobility transition. With plans for a pilot corridor in TCMC limits already in the works, we hope to see the insights from this workshop translate into action, for a more walkable and climate-resilient Thoothukudi!
