As you are well aware, Japan is still reeling from the horrifically devastating effects of the 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami that left nearly 14,000 dead, another 14,000 missing, and over 136,000 displaced without proper food, clothing, or shelter. To top it all off, extensive damage to the TEPCO nuclear power plant has caused a steady leakage of radiation into the surrounding atmosphere, e
ndangering countless lives and bringing back harrowing memories of Chernobyl and Hiroshima. In response, we have been organizing a fundraiser effort – a For the Children, By the Children event, a Concert for Japan in Chennai. Young musical talent from schools across Chennai will be performing, playing for a large audience including celebrities and music icons
The money raised will go to Save the Children, a non-profit NGO dedicated to saving lives not only through immediate disaster-relief efforts, but also through many long-term recovery programs. The organization provides food, medical care, education and works to set up “child friendly spaces” in evacuation areas. This creates a safe environment for the children to interact with other children and engage in educational activities while their parents restore their livelihoods and their townships.
