Ethno-veterinary medicine is the traditional knowledge and practice of preventing and treating animal diseases using locally available medicinal plants, natural products, and indigenous techniques. Developed through generations of farmers and pastoral communities, it provides affordable, culturally acceptable, and sustainable healthcare for livestock while complementing modern veterinary medicine and supporting biodiversity conservation.

Dr.N.Punniamurthy, retired Professor of Pharmacology at the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS), Chennai, has made exceptional contributions to the field of ethnoveterinary medicine through over three decades of dedicated research and extension activities. His pioneering work has enabled thousands of livestock farmers across India to adopt safe, cost-effective, and sustainable animal healthcare practices based on indigenous knowledge. Dr.Punniamurthy also served as a respected teacher and mentor to several members of the Hurricane Vets Charitable Trust (HVCT). In recognition of his outstanding research achievements, lifelong service to livestock health, and remarkable outreach among farming communities, the Government of India conferred upon him the prestigious Padma Shri Award in the field of Medicine in 2026.

The conferment of the Padma Shri upon Dr.N.Punniamurthy is a moment of immense pride for the veterinary profession, his former students, and researchers engaged in ethnoveterinary medicine. To celebrate this remarkable achievement, the Hurricane Vets Charitable Trust (HVCT), Chennai, approved Project No.166 and organized a felicitation function on 17.07.2026 at the Veterinary College and Research Institute (VCRI), Namakkal, where he served with distinction for 13 years as a teacher and researcher. Following the felicitation ceremony, Dr.Punniamurthy delivered a special lecture on Ethnoveterinary Medicine, inspiring students with his vast experience, research contributions, and vision for sustainable livestock healthcare.

The felicitation programme was jointly organized by the Hurricane Vets Charitable Trust (HVCT), Chennai, and the Veterinary College and Research Institute (VCRI), Namakkal, at the Alumni Auditorium of VCRI. The programme commenced with a vibrant cultural performance presented by the students of the Cultural Club, staff members of the Veterinary College and Research Institute, Namakkal, and Dr.Devaraju from Erode, adding a festive and memorable beginning to the felicitation ceremony.

Dr.D.Anandha Prakash Singh, Vice-President, Staff Club, VCRI, Namakkal, delivered the welcome address and greeted the distinguished gathering. Dr.P.Mekala, Professor, Department of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology, VCRI, Namakkal, presented an overview of the remarkable achievements and lifelong contributions of Padma Shri Dr.N.Punniamurthy to ethnoveterinary medicine and also coordinated the stage proceedings. The programme featured a ceremonial felicitation of Padma Shri Dr.N.Punniamurthy by the faculty members and staff of VCRI, Namakkal, in recognition of his outstanding service to veterinary science. Subsequently, Dr.S.Vigil Anbiah, Secretary, HVCT, and Dr.C.Theophilus Anand Kumar, Executive Committee Member, HVCT, felicitated Padma Shri Dr. N. Punniamurthy on behalf of the Hurricane Vets Charitable Trust, expressing their admiration for his exemplary achievements and lasting contributions to the veterinary profession.

In his presidential address, Dr.M.Selvaraju, Dean and President, Staff Club, VCRI, Namakkal, lauded the outstanding achievements of Padma Shri Dr.N.Punniamurthy, highlighting his humility, perseverance, and commitment to research. He fondly recollected his early association with Dr. Punniamurthy and appreciated his resilience in overcoming challenges throughout his distinguished career.

In his response, Padma Shri Dr.N.Punniamurthy expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS), the Veterinary College and Research Institute (VCRI), Namakkal, and the Hurricane Vets Charitable Trust (HVCT), Chennai, for organizing the memorable felicitation programme. He shared his journey of working closely with livestock farmers, research institutions, and international collaborators, highlighting the milestones that culminated in receiving the Padma Shri Award in Medicine for 2026. He emphasized that the honour was a significant recognition of traditional ethnoveterinary medicine and its relevance to the World Health Organization's One Health approach, encouraging young veterinarians to pursue research rooted in indigenous knowledge and sustainable animal healthcare.

Dr.C.Kathiravan, General Secretary, Staff Club, VCRI, Namakkal, proposed the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to the dignitaries, organizers, faculty members, students, and participants for contributing to the success of the programme.
Following lunch, Padma Shri Dr.N.Punniamurthy delivered a thought-provoking special lecture on “Sustaining India’s Dairy (Livestock): An Ecosystem-Based Approach for One Health Resilience.” The lecture highlighted the integration of Ethnoveterinary Medicine (EVM) with modern veterinary science through the One Health framework to promote sustainable livestock production.

In his lecture, Dr.Punniamurthy elaborated on the challenges encountered throughout the dairy value chain, including issues related to farmers, animal health, milk quality, transportation, marketing, and consumer safety. He underscored the importance of maintaining healthy soils, conserving biodiversity, preserving beneficial microbial ecosystems, and adopting nature-positive agricultural practices to ensure long-term livestock productivity. Emphasizing organic farming, livestock–crop integration, and ecosystem conservation, he demonstrated how traditional knowledge can complement scientific innovations. He concluded by inspiring the audience with the message that veterinarians are not only caretakers of animal health but also custodians of food safety, public health, and environmental sustainability, playing a pivotal role in advancing sustainable development and strengthening One Health resilience.

Educational materials such as notebooks, pens, pencils, erasers, school bags, and other stationery items are essential tools that support a student’s learning and academic development. They enable students to participate actively in classroom activities, complete assignments, and develop important skills such as writing, drawing, problem-solving, and creativity. For children from economically disadvantaged families, the provision of these materials eases the financial burden on parents and ensures equal educational opportunities.

Hurricane Vets Charitable Trust (HVCT), Chennai received a request for educational materials from Ms.V.Kiruthika, a Class X student of CHS Sharna Nagar School, Vysarpadi, Chennai, who is being raised by her mother. After careful consideration, HVCT facilitated the support through the generous sponsorship of Mr.Kavin Anand, an HVCT Associate. This commendable gesture reflects the compassionate spirit of HVCT associates, who voluntarily come forward to meet the educational needs of deserving students and encourage them to pursue their studies with confidence.

The educational materials were handed over to Ms. V. Kiruthika by the sponsor on 25.06.2026. HVCT gratefully acknowledges this generous support from Mr.Kavin Anand. Hurricane Vets Charitable Trust (HVCT), Chennai, is dedicated to support students who are facing severe financial difficulties. Identifying deserving beneficiaries is a challenging process, which is effectively carried out through the Standard Operating Protocol adopted by HVCT and by appointing a dedicated Programme Co-ordinator exclusively for the Educational Assistance Programme. Since 2015, HVCT has extended educational support to 40 students including 13 students from Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University through 38 educational assistance programmes. We strongly believe that students with a sincere aspiration for education should never be denied opportunities due to financial hardship, because such circumstances may force them towards undesirable activities or associations that may adversely affect their future and the interests of the Nation.

In this context, we have identified Mr.V.Srikanth, a third-year B.V.Sc. & A.H. student of the Veterinary College & Research Institute (VCRI), Salem, situated at Thalaivasal, Tamil Nadu, as a deserving beneficiary for educational assistance. Mr. Srikanth hails from Velampalayam near Rasipuram in Namakkal District and comes from an economically disadvantaged background. Having lost both his parents, he is currently being raised by his grandmother through her meagre income. Taking into consideration the severe financial challenges faced by the family, the Board of Trustees carefully reviewed the recommendations submitted by Dr.R.Richard Churchil, Programme Co-ordinator, Educational Assistance Programme, and approved the assistance accordingly.

In response to the request made by HVCT, Dr.M.Samuel Rajkumar, Member, HVCT, has generously undertaken full responsibility for meeting the mess fee expenses of Mr.V.Srikanth until the completion of his undergraduate studies. As an initial instalment, a sum of Rs. 25,000 has been transferred to the Hostel Warden’s account. The remaining three instalments will be released periodically based on the student’s academic performance and merit reports submitted by the Dean, VCRI, Salem.

The members of Hurricane Vets Charitable Trust met Mr.V.Srikanth on 21.05.2026 evening in the presence of Dr.A.Elango, Dean, Veterinary College & Research Institute (VCRI), Salem. During the occasion, Dr.A.Elango encouraged the student and assured him of his continued support and guidance. He also advised Mr. Srikanth to carry forward the spirit of charity by extending support to economically underprivileged students once he becomes professionally established. The members of HVCT also motivated and counselled the student, expressing their confidence in his future achievements. This initiative has been designated as Project No.164 of HVCT. We are pleased to note that this marks the third Educational Assistance Programme extended by HVCT to the students of VCRI, Salem.

The Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives of Thirumala Milk Products Pvt. Ltd., Chennai, exemplify the organization’s enduring commitment to promote inclusive, equitable, and quality education across its areas of operation. Beyond basic infrastructure enhancement, the CSR fund is strategically utilized to strengthen the overall administration and academic ecosystem of institutions. By addressing both academic and operational needs, the company seeks to create an enabling environment that fosters effective governance, improved teaching-learning outcomes, and student well-being.

In a significant step toward community-driven educational advancement, Hurricane Vets Charitable Trust (HVCT) established a strategic partnership with Thirumala Milk Products Pvt. Ltd. to effectively facilitate and channelize Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) support to deserving institutions. Acting as a crucial bridge between the corporate donor and beneficiary institutions, HVCT ensured that the company’s philanthropic vision was translated into meaningful, measurable outcomes at the grassroots level.
As part of this initiative, HVCT undertook a comprehensive needs assessment survey at the Division of Animal Husbandry, Faculty of Agriculture, Annamalai University, on 27th and 28th March 2025. This systematic evaluation enabled the identification of key infrastructural, academic, and administrative requirements, thereby laying a strong foundation for targeted and impactful CSR interventions.

Based on HVCT’s survey and recommendations, the proposal was reviewed and approved by the company. The sanctioned educational resources were formally handed over to the Division of Animal Husbandry, Faculty of Agriculture, Annamalai University, by Dr.S.Jeyabal, Head of Agro-Services, Thirumala Milk Products Pvt. Ltd. and were received by Dr.R.Vijayalakshmi, Professor and Head, Division of Animal Husbandry, on 24th April 2026 under HVCT Project No. 163.

The materials distributed under this initiative comprised one desktop computer with printer, one laptop, and one photocopy machine. The event was attended by Dr. S. Jeyabal, Head of Agro- Services, Thirumala Milk Products Pvt. Ltd., Chennai; Dr.R.Vijayalakshmi, Professor and Head, Division of Animal Husbandry, Annamalai University; Dr.S.Vigil Anbiah, Secretary, HVCT; Dr.R.Gnanasekar, Assistant Professor, Division of Animal Husbandry; Mr.J.Prasanna, Special Officer, Annamalai University; Mr. Murugesan and Mr. Kumar from the Division of Animal Husbandry, along with second-year students of the Faculty of Agriculture, Annamalai University.

Recognizing that access to quality education is the cornerstone of sustainable community development, the company is steadfastly dedicated to empower students and educators in government schools and other deserving institutions through meaningful, need-based interventions.

In a meaningful stride toward community-driven educational development, Hurricane Vets Charitable Trust (HVCT) entered into a strategic partnership with Thirumala Milk Products Pvt. Ltd. to facilitate and channelize CSR support to government schools in need. Serving as a vital link between educational institutions and the corporate donor, HVCT played a pivotal role in ensuring that the company's philanthropic commitment translated into tangible, on-the-ground impact.

With the active support and co-operation of Thirumala's dedicated staff HVCT conducted a comprehensive needs assessment survey across government schools in Thiruvannamalai District on March 27th and 28th, 2025. Following the survey, headmasters of the identified schools formally submitted their institution-specific requirements. Based on these inputs, HVCT meticulously compiled and forwarded recommendation letters to Thirumala Milk Products Pvt. Ltd., requesting the provision of essential learning materials for the beneficiary schools. The proposals were duly reviewed and approved by the company, reflecting its commitment to responsible and responsive CSR engagement. In fulfilment of this initiative, the approved educational materials were successfully distributed to Panchayat Union Middle School, Paiyur Village, Anakavoor Block, Thiruvannamalai District, on April 21st, 2026, under HVCT Project No. 162.

The materials handed over included one table, five chairs, twenty children’s desk chairs, five fans, five stainless steel pots, twenty plastic chairs, and one steel bureau. The Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) fund of Thirumala Milk Products Pvt. Ltd., Chennai, is committed to enhance educational infrastructure and providing essential resources to students and teachers in government schools and other institutions based on need within its areas of operation.

In this context, Hurricane Vets Charitable Trust (HVCT) partnered with Thirumala Milk Products Pvt. Ltd. to facilitate CSR support, acting as a link between educational institutions and the company. On March 27th –28th , 2025, HVCT, with the support of Thirumala staff, conducted a needs assessment survey in government schools across Thiruvannamalai District. Based on the requirements submitted by headmasters, recommendation letters were sent to the company requesting essential learning materials. These were approved, and the materials were distributed to Panchayat Union Middle School, Thenpudupattu, T.V. Kundram, Viluppuram District, on April 17th , 2026, under HVCT Project No. 161.

The materials handed over included One Laptop computer, Four benches and two Black boards. The following members participated in the event: Mr.R. These funds are generally utilized for activities such as education, healthcare, environmental conservation, infrastructure development, and disaster relief. Such initiatives not only enhance a company’s reputation but also strengthen community relationships and promote sustainable development, while fulfilling ethical and legal responsibilities.

The CSR fund of Thirumala Milk Products Pvt. Ltd., Chennai, is dedicated to supporting educational infrastructure and providing essential resources for students and teachers in government schools and other need-based institutions within their areas of operation.

In this context, Hurricane Vets Charitable Trust (HVCT) collaborated with Thirumala Milk Products Pvt. Ltd. to facilitate CSR funding, serving as a bridge between educational institutions and the funding organization. On March 27th and 28th , 2025, HVCT, with the support of Thirumala staff, conducted a survey to assess the needs of government schools in Thiruvannamalai District. Based on the requests received from the headmasters, recommendation letters were forwarded to Thirumala Milk Products Pvt. Ltd., seeking CSR support for providing essential learning materials. These recommendations were positively considered, and the materials were distributed to the Panchayat Union Middle School, Adivaram, Pudupalayam (near Chenagam), Thiruvannamalai District, on April 10th , 2026, as Project No. 160 of HVCT.

The materials handed over included two steel bureaus, ten plastic chairs, and one table-chair set. These materials were received by the Headmistress in charge, Ms. G. J. Mercy Gulady. The field assessment and facilitation carried out by Hurricane Vets Charitable Trust in collaboration with Thirumala are highly commendable.

We express our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. K. Baskarasethupathi, Director of Milk Collections, Lactalis India, for his valuable recommendations to the CSR committee of Thirumala, which played a key role in realizing this initiative. We also sincerely thank Dr. S. Jeyabal, Head of Agro Services, Thirumala for handing over the materials to the school. A Career Guidance Programme is highly important for 10th standard students as it helps them make decisions about their future education and career paths. At this stage, students must choose suitable academic streams such as science, commerce, or arts, which significantly influence their future opportunities. Career guidance provides information about various courses, professions, and skill requirements, helping students understand their interests and abilities. It also motivates them to set clear goals and build confidence in their choices. By interacting with experts and counsellors, students gain clarity and direction, enabling them to plan their studies effectively and work towards a successful and fulfilling career.

In this context, Hurricane Vets Charitable Trust (HVCT), Chennai, in association with Duraisamy Generous Social Educational Association (DGSEA), organized a Career Guidance Programme for the 10th standard students who are inmates of DGSEA on 07.03.2026 as Project No.159 of HVCT. Nearly 100 rural students participated in the programme and actively interacted with the resource person, which clearly reflected their keen interest and the positive impact of the session.

The technical session was conducted by Mr.A.A.Anbarasu, Senior Career Guidance Counselor, Anbu Career Guidance, Gopichettipalayam, Erode District. Anbu Career Guidance has more than 25 years of experience in the education sector and has guided thousands of students towards suitable academic and career pathways. The organization strongly believes that the right guidance at the right time can significantly transform a student’s future for the better.

Duraisamy Generous Social Educational Association (DGSEA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to rural development, education, and social welfare in Tamil Nadu. It is located in Vilvarayanallur, Madurantakam, in Chengalpattu District. Established in 1979, DGSEA works primarily in the fields of education, child welfare, women’s empowerment, and care for senior citizens, with a focus on improving the quality of life of marginalized rural communities. For over four decades, DGSEA has been actively involved in educating children, supporting the elderly, empowering women, and delivering essential social services in rural areas of Tamil Nadu. Through its various initiatives, the organization strives to break the cycle of poverty by promoting education, skill development, and community-based welfare programmes.

We express our sincere thanks to Mr. Kumar Krishnamurthi, Chairman cm General Secretary, DGSEA, for hosting the event, which was well organized with the support of the Headmistress, teachers, and other staff members of the organization. We also thank Mr.A.A.Anbarasu, Senior Career Guidance Counselor, Anbu Career Guidance, for his informative presentation on various career options in higher education and for interacting with and motivating the rural students.

Our gratitude is extended to Dr.K.P.Anand, Founder President, HVCT, for co-ordinating this programme. We also thank Dr.S.Vigil Anbiah, Secretary, HVCT, and Mrs.D.
