Remembering Rishi Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay on his punyatithi, the literary sage who gave voice to the soul of Bharat through his numerous novels, such as Anandamatha, and the exceptional lyric: Vande Mataram.

Gurudeva Tagore once wrote, “Bankim Chandra had equal strength in both his hands, he was a true sabyasachi. With one hand, he created literary works of excellence; and with the other, he guided young and aspiring authors. With one hand, he ignited the light of literary enlightenment; and with the other, he blew away the smoke and ash of ignorance and ill-conceived notions.”

His words were not merely poetry, but a call to awaken civilizational consciousness and national pride. In Bankim, literature became sadhana, and the nation, a sacred ideal.

As we reflect on his legacy, we are reminded that the idea of India is not just political, it is deeply cultural, spiritual, and civilizational.

When Vande Mataram was created 150 years ago, the following key elements were incorporated by Sri Bankim Chandra Chattopadyay

Nature’s Abundance: Bharat Mata is described as “su-jalam su-phalam” (rich in water, rich in fruit), “shasya-shyamalam” (clad in green crops/fields), and “malaya-ja sheetalam” (cool with the breezes of the Malaya mountains).

Divine Personification: The song invokes goddesses Durga, Lakshmi (Kamala), and Saraswati (Vani), with Bharat Mata seen as a goddess exuding power, prosperity, and wisdom.

Beauty and Serenity: She is described as luminous with moonlight (“shubhra jyotsna-pulakita yamini” – radiant night lit by pure moonlight), clothed in blossoming trees and sweetly smiling (“phulla-kusumita drumadala-shobhini, suhasini, sumadhura bhashini” – adorned with blooming trees, smiling, and sweet spoken).

Mother’s Affection and Strength: She is the bestower of bliss and blessings (“sukhadaam varadaam”), and is invoked for her strength and protection. The song describes her as holding the power to vanquish evil, uplift the weak, and inspire millions.

Source of Knowledge and Virtue: The lyrics speak of Bharat Mata as the source of knowledge, faith, and moral strength (“tumi vidya, tumi dharma, tumi hridi, tumi marma”).

Unity and Motherhood: Bharat Mata is viewed as the unifying mother of countless sons and daughters, a symbol of national pride, unity, and distinct cultural identity.

Vande Mataram, IIT Madras humbly expresses its extreme gratitude to Shri SL Bhyrappa (20 Aug 1931 to 24 Sep 2025) for his insurmountable contributions to the cause of Satya and Sanatan.

Satya - Shri Bhyrappa was a stalwart who exposed the truth of Tipu Sultan to be the bigoted sectarian instead of the secular humanist in his novel Aavarna.

Sanatan - Shri Bhyrappa wrote Parva, a novel that narrated social structure, values and morality in the Mahabharata.

His combination of a strong Indic foundation with Sanatani values and a scholarship brought the Indic movement to the forefront in the dark days of complete Communist hegemony over the arts.

Vande Mataram is unlucky to have not had him address us at IIT Madras, but we believe that such presences never die. We hope and pray for the Sadgati of a soul that lived a purposeful life in its 94 years on earth. Om shanti.
