Today marks National Girls & Women in Sports Day – a moment to celebrate not just the wins, but the life-changing lessons learned through every missed shot, setback, and comeback.
At Hoops Creating Hope, we’ve seen what happens when girls get access to sport: they learn to navigate failure, take risks, and persist when the odds are stacked against them.
Through our programs in India, we’ve impacted 2,500+ students with an 85% school advancement rate vs the population average of 16%.
But the real story? The girl who learned to get back up. The student who found her voice calling plays. The young woman who realized failure isn’t fatal – it’s feedback.
As parents and coaches, our job isn’t to shield young athletes from failure – it’s to create environments where they can practice navigating it. Every practice is preparing them for challenges far bigger than basketball.
Sport teaches our daughters they belong in competitive spaces. That their voice matters. That taking the last shot – and missing – is still better than never shooting.
When we give girls access to sport, we’re not just building better athletes – we’re building the leaders our world and communities desperately need.
