As an organization working with marginalised communities across India, we celebrate Dalit History Month to raise awareness, educate, and honor Dalit history and culture.

This April, we’ve focused on the theme ‘Dalit Women,’ and we’re closing the month with a special celebration.

Every year, as we begin Dalit History Month, we find ourselves returning to a few questions what, why, and how. Through many conversations and with a lot of intention, we arrive at a theme that feels both urgent and necessary.

This year, we’re focusing on Dalit women, the challenges they continue to face, the strength they hold, and the ways they have shaped and reclaimed their own histories.

We invite each one of you to join us for the closing ceremony, where the children and teens of Pudiyador will share their learning through performances and an interactive gallery walk.

We were just 20 minutes into our session when one Akka quipped, “It has been a long while since I laughed from my heart, can you please organize more sessions like this?”For almost all the women in the community that we work with, even getting an hour off for themselves is not allowed. And so, whenever it is around Women’s Day, we make sure everything we do to celebrate is centered around the women: making her feel special, while also sharing with them the history of how the day came to be, and the need for a woman to be empowered. In addition to a few craft and game sessions, we ended the day with a simple pledge, a commitment to work towards being better, mentally, physically, and emotionally.

No one is ever fully prepared for a new role like motherhood. Yet society often expects a new mother to have everything together. This is even more true for women from underserved communities. In our work, we have noticed how often she is burdened by personal expectations, guilt, and the overwhelming newness of changing life schedules. Since starting the Cradle Health Program in 2019, we have worked with over 80 pregnant women through early motherhood, supporting them with some of the most basic yet essential needs like listening to them, providing access to knowledge and mental health support, raising awareness, and offering monthly nutrition kits. This month, we celebrate five mothers who have journeyed through the Cradle Health Program. We held a small graduation ceremony to mark the completion of their learning journey. 🌿

During an impromptu session in one of our programs, we asked our 3 to 5 year olds a simple question: What do you think about Pudiyador?

It was not planned as an assessment. It was just a conversation.
Their responses surprised their teacher, who then shared them with all of us.

They drew our centres as homes.
They said they love coming here to study and play.
They spoke about their teachers and the joy they feel in the space.

At that age, children may not articulate outcomes or impact the way adults do. But they clearly express comfort, safety, and belonging.

For us, this is an important reminder. Impact in early childhood programs is not only about attendance or activities delivered. It is also about whether children feel happy, safe, and valued.
