The Students' Federation of Dravidians strongly condemns the disturbing incident that occurred on December 20, 2025, in which a law student was s*xually harassed by a Tamil Nadu police head constable while travelling by train to Coimbatore. Demonstrating immense courage and presence of mind, the student recorded the incident and immediately informed the Railway Police. As a result of her quick action, the train was halted at Katpadi Railway Station, where the accused was detained.
At a time when the government is promoting girls' education through initiatives such as Pudhumai Pen, Thozhi Hostel, and Free Bus services to enhance women's participation and leadership in the state, incidents like this are disheartening.
The individual involved has been identified as Sheikh Abdullah, a head constable with the Tamil Nadu police, attached to the RS Puram Police Station. He has been suspended, and an FIR has been registered against him. While these measures are necessary, they are only the beginning. The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M. K. Stalin, must take essential steps to ensure justice for the victim and prevent similar incidents from happening to any student in the state.
The Students' Federation of Dravidians stands in solidarity with the student and reaffirms its commitment to fighting for gender justice.
We urge the Tamil Nadu Government to
1. Take immediate action against the perpetrator
2. Ensure that s*x education is an integral part of the school curriculum
3. Conduct gender sensitisation programs for government employees in a timely manner.
