Equality can only be achieved when the oppressed gain political power. This political power will be meaningless when it comes without political awareness, says Dr. B. R. Ambedkar. πŸ’™

On this birth anniversary, The Penn Collective tries to walk his path, by creating political awareness through political education, and enabling the marginalized to attain political power. ✊🏽

On this special day, we had a special intimate gathering, where we started by reading an excerpt from Dr. Ambedkar's book on collectivising. We shared what Dr. B. R. Ambedkar means to each of us and how we were introduced to Ambedkar and his ideologies. πŸ’™

We chose to celebrate Ambedkar through art and came up with our deeply personal, yet political pieces of art. πŸ’™

Our conviction to continue the journey of equality, feminism, and justice in his path has strengthened. ✊🏽

Ms. Subhashini, from The Penn Collective had the opportunity to facilitate a session on "Gender Awareness & Social Sensitivity" at the Two-Day Workshop on Legal Literacy organized by the School of Excellence, Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University, with support from the Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department, Government of Tamil Nadu.

The space brought together a mix of folk artists from around 15 districts across Tamil Nadu and law students, making the conversations grounded and reflective.

Through discussions, activities, and questions, we unpacked:
- What we think is β€œnatural” vs what is socially constructed
- How gender roles and stereotypes shape everyday lives
- Who benefits from these norms, and who gets restricted
- The many forms of gender-based violence that often go unnoticed

The session was highly interactive, and it was encouraging to see participants engage, question, and challenge long-held beliefs with honesty and openness.

Grateful for the space, the conversations, and the collective willingness to unlearn and rethink.

With the state assembly elections round the corner, the election fever has gone up in the state of Tamil Nadu. But so has the number of gender insensitive comments and sexually colored remarks of the men in politics during campaigns.

From C Ve Shanmugam to Nainar Nagendran to Dr. Ponmudi, no political party has left the stone unturned when it comes to making derogatory statements against women.

We, a group of concerned citizens, and civil society groups, have come together with this demand for action urging all the political parties to issue guidelines to the candidates, cadres, and speakers to campaign in a gender-sensitive manner and to take strict actions including cancellation of candidature against those who violate the guidelines.

This election season, let's demand accountability from our parties and leaders towards the equality and justice that they claim to champion for. Share these images widely and tag all the political parties and leaders and join in this call for action!

Let's make politics a safe and respectful space for everyone! ✊🏽

As part of our outreach efforts to identify 100 women for the Thenkoodu program, The Penn Collective team, including Ms. Poorani ( ), Ms. Manthra Shree ( ) and Ms. Shivanjali ( ) went on a whirlwind campaign mode across Tiruppur district last week.

One of our programs targeted the SHG women across the district in which they were sensitised on gender, the importance of women's participation in politics, and about the Thenkoodu program. At the end of the session, the interested participants also gave their details to be registered under Thenkoodu. More than 120 SHG women were sensitised.

Our outreach efforts were covered widely in the Tamil dailies including Dinakaran, Dinathanthi and Dinamani.

If you're interested in joining Thenkoodu as a participant or as a volunteer, reach out to us through WhatsApp at 9629020856.

The 'Bread and Roses' movement that laid the foundation for the celebration of International Women's Day (properly known as the International Working Women's day) demanded reducing the working hours to 8 hours so that a dignified life with leisure can be led.

But historically women haven't been able to enjoy leisure and rest. Never absolutely and never without guilt!

We, at The Penn Collective, wanted to change this, at least for a day and came up with the "Summa dhan Irukom" event to celebrate Women's day and our 3 year anniversary.

What started as a fun idea turned out to be a profound and memorable experience with an intimate gathering of women coming together, choosing only themselves for those 3 hours.

We laughed, we played, we made art, we danced our heart out, and had fun without any guilt! Most of us, for the first time ever! πŸ’œ

To many such days of celebration of self πŸ₯‚

The Penn Collective Team was invited to grace the Women's Day Celebration organized by the Mohamed Sathak AJ Academy of Architecture, Chennai on 4th March 2026.

An in-depth gender sensitisation workshop was planned for the students. Ms. Sathya Bharathi and Ms. Poorani from the team performed a play and song calling out the misogyny and sexist language used in Tamil Cinema.

Ms. Poorani then handled a session on Gender sensitisation with interaction, case studies, and activity where connections between misogyny, gender norms, and gender-based violence were established.

Mr. Sivanesakumaran established the much needed connection between Architecture and Gender sensitivity and spoke about the importance of being gender sensible as an Architect, citing examples from his career.

Ms. Manthra Shree oriented the students on the need and importance for meaningful women's representation in politics and spoke about the flagship 'Thenkoodu' initiative.

The workshop concluded with discussion, feedback, and group photos.

We also put up a stall selling The Penn Collective's merchandise and books from .xyz

The Penn Collective extends our heartfelt gratitude to MSAJAA and to the entire organizing team for being such a kind host and for having us over.
