Katsushika Hokusai was one of the most celebrated artists in Japanese history. Between 1826 and 1833, when he was in his mid 60s and early 70s, he created his greatest work—a series of colour woodblock prints titled Thirty Six Views of Mt. Fuji. Among those paintings was his masterpiece: The Great Wave Off Kanagawa. This painting, created during a time of struggle for Hokusai, shows a towering wall of water edged with claw like foam about to crash down on three slim boats full of rowers.

Psalm 107 also tells a story of people in danger at sea. Afloat on the waves, “they mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths”. As a result, “their courage melted away” (V.26). Eventually, the sailors sent an S.O.S. to God, and He answered by smoothing out the sea and guiding them to safety (VV.28-30).

When we face trouble, we tend to look to other people for guidance and comfort. They are in the same boat, however—lost in an ocean of life’s ups and downs. Only God is outside the boat, fully in control, stable and strong enough to calm the storms (VV.24-25,29). Facing trouble? Call out to Him!

To pray about . . .

Dear God, help me to remember that nothing can separate me from Your love. Please remind me of Your power and care when I’m in the middle of life’s storms.

Mark messed up. He arrived an hour late at a restaurant where he was meeting a friend from church. The friend had already left. Feeling sorry about his mistake, Mark got a gift certificate from the restaurant and stopped at a local card shop to search for an apology card. Among hundreds of cards, he was surprised to find only a few “sorry for my actions” cards in
a forgotten part of the shop. He got one and gave it to his friend who accepted his apology.

Although “I’m sorry” cards may not be popular, apologies are always needed in our relationships. Apologising is a biblical action. Jesus told His followers to make things right with anyone we’ve hurt or upset (MATTHEW 5:23-24; 18:15-20). Paul later said, “If it is possible, as far as depends on you, live at peace with everyone” (ROMANS 12:18). Living at peace means we have to accept where we’ve gone wrong, and do our best to make up for it.

Apologies can be hard to make because it takes humility to admit our mistake, which may not come naturally for us. Yet taking responsibility for how we were wrong in a situation can bring healing and growth to a relationship.

Have you messed up? Swallow your pride and make the first move—even if you can’t find a card to help you say it.

Thinking it over . . .

Is there anyone you have upset recently? Why not get in touch
with them today and say sorry.

Audley Black’s church near the south coast of Jamaica has been in a building programme since at least 2005. That was the first time I visited his church and saw that they were expanding. The last time I was there—in the spring of 2011—some of the walls were up. By that summer, they had
started on the roof. When I suggested to Audley that perhaps the church would be done when I thought I might return in a few years, he said it was a possibility.

There was no hint of disappointment that this project could take eight years or longer! No, Audley and his people are excited about what God is doing, and they’re patient with His timing.

We are often not that patient. We want things to happen quickly, our dreams to come true right away and our problems to be fixed today.

Maybe we need to be reminded that some things take time—God’s time. For instance, when the Israelites first left Egypt, God sent them on the long route to the Promised Land (EXODUS 13:17-18). During that time He prepared them, taught them and challenged them.

In our ‘quick fix’ world, we want everything done now. Yet sometimes that’s not God’s plan. Let’s look for God’s help and learn to accept His timing.

To pray about . . .

Father God, I don’t always understand Your answers to my prayers, but I know I can trust You. Help me to keep walking with You, through the ups and downs.

A friend of Our Daily Bread Ministries shared with me her happiness in working as a translator of Bible-teaching resources. She said that she feels really excited because she has the first opportunity to enjoy the teaching from the Bible in the materials. As she works through them, she
notes, “There is always something that addresses a need I’m facing.” When she needs encouragement from God, relevant biblical help is provided.

As she spoke, I thought of how our God faithfully cares for us in so many ways. In the different times of life, we find ourselves facing all sorts of challenges—but we do not face them on our own. As Jesus said, “Your Father knows what you need before you ask him” (MATTHEW 6:8). In our time of need—whether spiritual, emotional or physical—we can rely on the faithful care and concern of the Father. He knows us so well that He chooses the perfect time to give us what is best and to send confirmation of His care. “Not one [sparrow] is forgotten before God. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear . . . you are of more value than many sparrows” (LUKE 12:6-7, NKJV).

We can always trust His love.

Thinking it over . . .

What struggles are you going through at the moment that you can trust to God? Or what big questions do you have for Him? Why not pray about them today.

THE WRIGHT STUFF

Bible: Genesis 1:1-23
Let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky (V.20).

On 29th September 1909, a young man took flight in a strange machine that looked like a huge box kite. As he rose into the sky, the pilot worked the levers so he could fly over a nearby harbour. People looked up in amazement. In the harbour, boats celebrated by sounding their steam
whistles. The nearby crowds exploded with cheers at the sight of Wilbur Wright taking a flight into the heavens.

Wilbur’s brother Orville, who had piloted the first airplane flight six years earlier, reflected on what inspired them to fly: “The desire to fly is an idea handed down to us by our ancestors who . . . looked enviously on the birds soaring freely through space, at full speed, above all obstacles, on the infinite highway of the air.” The Wright brothers spent a great deal of time studying birds in flight before designing their planes.

In Genesis we read that “in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (GENESIS 1:1), and He said, “Let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky” (V.20). We are amazed at the inventiveness of the Wright brothers. Yet, the Creator, who made creatures able to fly in the first place, deserves the real glory—for the birds and for every other creation He has made!

What I’m thankful for . . .

God, thank You for the wonder of Your creation. It is truly awesome to think that You made everything in this world. You are worthy of all praise!
