Education and Economic Empowerment Highlighted at 36th CMS Day and HIV/AIDS Awareness Programme

Kamalanagar: The 36th CMS Day and an awareness programme on HIV/AIDS were Celebrated by the Central Chakma Mahila Samiti (CMS), bringing together community members to promote women’s empowerment, skill development, education and social awareness.

Addressing the gathering, Dangu Nibir Chakma, General Secretary of the Central Mizoram Chakma Students’ Union (CMCSU), emphasised the importance of empowering women through education, skills and economic opportunities.

He highlighted the need to modernise traditional skills by upgrading practices such as handloom weaving with suitable machine-based techniques. According to him, improving skills and efficiency can help increase productivity and create better earning opportunities for women.

He also encouraged community members to learn skills beyond traditional practices and explore techniques and knowledge from other communities and tribes. Such exposure, he noted, could help expand market opportunities while contributing to greater economic development within the community.

“The highest priority must be given to education,” he stressed, describing education as a means to learn, adapt, analyse and make informed decisions.

He further underlined the importance of providing equal support to girls in pursuing their education and careers until they achieve their goals, noting that such sustained encouragement is still not common enough in society.

Concluding his address, Dangu Nibir Chakma said that education gives individuals the strength to think, analyse and judge, and emphasised that empowerment and education must go hand in hand for meaningful and sustainable progress in the community.
