In a significant boost to tiger conservation efforts, Chhattisgarh is set to create India's third-largest tiger reserve, spanning 2,829 square kilometers, which will provide a vital habitat for tigers to thrive and help restore the state's declining tiger population.
The Guru Ghasidas-Tamor Pingla Tiger Reserve spanning 2,829 square kilometers across four northern districts, will be a critical addition to India’s tiger conservation efforts. This decision comes after the Chhattisgarh High Court intervened on July 15, urging the state to respond promptly to the proposal for the new reserve.
The urgency aligns with the Indian tiger authority’s (NTCA) alarming report that Chhattisgarh’s tiger population has plummeted from 46 in 2014 to just 17 in 2022. The new reserve merges the Guru Ghasidas National Park and Tamor Pingla Wildlife Sanctuary, creating a continuous habitat that is crucial for the survival and proliferation of tigers.
Chhattisgarh’s unique geography, with its lush forests and diverse ecosystems, makes it an ideal tiger habitat. However, development pressures have fragmented these habitats. The creation of this new reserve strengthens India’s network of protected areas, playing a vital role in preserving its rich biodiversity and supporting tiger conservation nationwide.
This Tiger Reserve will Connect the Tiger Corridor for Sanjay Dubri Tiger Reserve,Sanjay National Park to the Guru Ghasidas Tiger Reserve and it will be a Very Large area for the Tigers. 🐅
