Are you Modern?

Modern man is not modern. Only the modern world is modern. Man remains very ancient and old. When I look at your faces, I recognise ancient faces. You have been here many, many lives, and you have remained almost the same. You have not learnt anything. Objects have changed, but man remains just the same.

In fact, only a 'no-mind' can be new and modern because only no-mind can be fresh, every moment fresh. No-mind never accumulates. The mirror is always clean; no dust accumulates on it. Mind is an accumulator; it goes on accumulating. That's why even scientists feel that when a certain discovery is made, it is not made by the mind, but only in the gaps where mind doesn't exist - in sleep sometimes.

And, this has been happening to many people: it happened to Madame Curie; she was awarded the Nobel Prize for a moment of no-mind. She was working, again, on a mathematical problem. She worked hard; nothing was coming out: months passed. Then one night, she suddenly got up in her sleep, went to the table, wrote the answer, went back to her bed and forgot everything about it. In the morning when she went to the table, she could not believe it: the answer was there. In deep sleep, the mind drops; the no-mind functions.

Why fight with life, learn to flow with it:

When someone speaks unpleasant words, why is it that I dislike it so much? Why does it hurt me deeply and how can I bear it?

One of the Buddha’s beautiful teachings is ‘ta-thatha’, which means total acceptance. The power of acceptance dissolves our hurt. We resist something and this resistance creates a conflict with what is.

When someone speaks unpleasant words, don’t create a conflict in your mind. Accept that it is others’ perception and others’ perceptions need not be true. Learn to be at peace with what is and that is possible if you totally accept the other.

Acceptance is not endorsing his point of view but being at peace with others’ points of view. If you accept his unpleasant words without condemning him, then an inner understanding opens with deep awareness.

If you condemn him, then your memories of unpleasantness add themselves to the present unpleasantness, and your pain increases. The dissatisfactions of the past will create distaste toward the present, leading to distrust of the future.

You dislike someone’s unpleasant words because you have a map of how others should behave and are addicted to that expectation. If others’ behavior does not fit into your expectations, you start disliking it.

Let us learn to practice acceptance at all levels. Let us accept our body as it is. Out of acceptance, improve the quality of the body. Accept the surrounding world as it is and out of that, learn to improve it.

Learn not to fight with life, but flow with life. The moment you flow with life, an inner lightness will envelop you, a new quality of aliveness will fill you, a new joy will bless you, and a different quality of cheerfulness will pervade you.

Such a person cannot be hurt, cannot be disturbed. His perception of others will not be distorted. His factual perception is not influenced by his dogma and expectation.

Look at others who are hurt, discontentment fills their life. Their eyes are filled with expectations and hence they carry hurt inside their heart.

Acceptance is the key to transforming your life. When you accept, you experience the ‘such-ness’ of what is and not the fantasy of ‘what should be’.

Don’t be a victim of your logic; let the power of love teach you the art of operating from the heart and the heart knows how to accept. When there is love, there is acceptance. You will never know the poetry of life, the glory of life, the grandeur of life if you have not learned the art of acceptance.

Most of us live in a state of chaos. How can one live in a cosmos?

The word ‘cosmos’ comes from the word ‘cosmology’, which means ‘order’. Mystics consider the universe to be an expression of order. There are levels of order and one has to be open and help oneself to climb the various levels of order.

If one is living a mechanical life, one lives in chaos. Be more conscious and live in harmony, which is the order of the cosmos.

Don’t get bogged down in examination stress. Learn to use stress totally, it is your creative force, says OSHO

A Canadian psychoanalyst, Hans Selye, has been working his whole life on only one problem — stress. He has come to some profound conclusions. One is that stress is not wrong always; it can be used in beautiful ways. It is not necessarily negative, but if we think that it is negative, then we create problems. Stress in itself can be used as a stepping stone; it can become a creative force. But down the ages, we have been taught that stress is bad, that when you are under any kind of stress you become afraid. And your fear makes it even more stressful; the situation is not helped by it. For example, there is some situation in the market that is creating stress. The moment you feel that there is some tension, some stress, you become afraid that this should not be so: ‘I have to relax.’ Now, trying to relax will not help, it will create a new kind of stress. When there is stress, use it as creative energy.

First, no need to fight it, accept it. It is perfectly okay. Stress is simply an indication that the body is getting ready to fight it. Now if you try to relax, and take tranquilizers, you are going against the body. The body is getting ready to fight a certain challenge that is there, enjoy the challenge!

In fact, if you have lived your stress totally, you will come to the point of relaxation automatically; you can go on only so far, then the body automatically relaxes. If you want to relax in the middle, you create trouble; the body cannot relax in the middle. It is almost as if an Olympic runner is getting ready, just waiting for the whistle, the signal, and he will be off, he will go like the wind. He is full of stress; now is not the time to relax. If he takes a tranquilizer, he will never be of any use in the race. Or if he relaxes there and tries to meditate, he will lose all. He has to use his stress: the stress is boiling, it is gathering energy. He is becoming more and more vital and potential. Now he has to sit on this stress and use it as energy, as fuel.

Selye has given a new name for this kind of stress; he calls it ‘eustress’, like euphoria. It is positive stress. When the runner has run, he will fall into a deep sleep, and the problem is solved. Stress has disappeared of its own accord.

So try this too: when there is a stressful situation, don’t freak out, don’t become afraid of it. Go into it, use it to fight with. A man has tremendous energy and the more you use it, the more you have of it.

Gibberish Meditation

The word ‘gibberish’ comes from a Sufi mystic whose name was Jabbar — and that was his only meditation. Whoever would come, he would say, “Sit down and start”. Jabbar helped many people to become utterly silent. How long you can go on? The mind becomes empty. Slowly, slowly a deep nothingness... and in that nothingness a flame of awareness. It is always present, surrounded by your gibberish. The gibberish must be taken out; that is your poison. The same goes for the body. Your body has tensions.

Just start making any movement that the body wants to make. You should not manipulate it. If it wants to dance, it wants to jog, it wants to run, it wants to roll down on the ground, you should not do it, you should simply allow it. Tell the body, “You are free, do whatever you want.” And you will be surprised, “My God! All these things the body wanted to do but I was holding back, and that was the tension.”

So, there are two kinds of tensions: body tensions and mental tensions. Both must be released before you can start relaxation, which will bring you to awareness.

Love is not attachment :
Love is beautiful only when there is no attachment to it. Love means just the opposite of attachment because attachment creates a very unloving space. Attachment means you will be possessive and, from the other side, you will be possessed. Everybody wants to get out of prison; hence the fear. The more you possess, the more you become afraid that the other will try to escape. To possess means to reduce the other person into a thing, a commodity. That is utterly destructive and inhuman. A child is not furniture, a woman is not a thing, and a man is not a commodity. The moment you possess somebody, you are exploiting, and love cannot exploit.
And, the moment you possess, you are continuously afraid, anxious, worried, shaky, trembling deep down. There is always fear. It is bound to be there because to possess somebody means you are creating bo***ge for the other person, and nobody likes bo***ge; everybody resists it. It is very rare to come across lovers who are friendly because possessiveness does not allow friendship to grow.
When love and freedom go together, hand in hand, they create the most beautiful space possible. It is only in that space that one comes to know the ultimate. That space is the temple of the ultimate. That space is the most precious phenomenon in existence.
